This sort of thing has been done before, but this is the first time an Apple product has been able to run Gingerbread. Take a peek at the video below for what appears to be a fully functional (albeit slowly moving) version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread on a jailbroken iPhone 3G.

There are a short list of iPhones and iOS’ that you’re going to be able to work this on, they are: iPhone 2G running iOS 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 or iPhone 3G running iOS 3.1.2, 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2 and 4.1. If you do not have one of these setups, just forget it! Or use a different method than Bootlace. The way to use Bootlace is simple! Once you’ve got your phone jailbroken, just run Cydia from your iPhone’s springboard and add http://repo.neonkoala.co.uk/ as repository – add the source, then install Bootlace. As expected this emulator will require “superphone” type hardware. It is currently being tested on a Nexus One and progress is coming along quite nicely.  He said its already running at a faster clip on the Nexus than it does on the iPhone. It does still have a few kinks that need to be ironed out. Also, 2.1 and above will likely be a requirement, 2.2 should greatly improve the performance when it is released for public consumption. Adding this emulator to Android would improve its gaming library exponentially, who’s ready for some Final Fantasy or Tekken on their Android device?

One this PSX port is done there’s a good chance that he will begin working on a N64 emulator.

In fact, efforts to port Android’s system to the OMAP 3 language (the processor architecture used in the Pre) have been ongoing since July of last year.  The biggest hurdles will be accessing the Pre’s low-level system, called the bootloader, to enable switching between its webOS and Android, and finding enough space to do it in Pre’s fixed 8GB of internal storage.

Since the G1’s bootloader tries to boot from the expansion card first, Android’s first publicly-available handset lends a more easily tested-upon platform for dual-booting.  The Palm Pre does not have user-upgradeable storage, so a new OS would need to be flashed to the device’s memory banks over a USB serial connection.  Once running on the Pre’s hardware, Android would need drivers written for it to allow control of the touchscreen, camera, cell phone radio and the like.  It also remains to be seen how the secondary system would be stored on the phone without compromising the existing functions of webOS.  One thing is for certain: once Pre has been released, its hardware is sure to be tried and tested to see what it’s truly capable of, including running things other than Palm’s intended webOS.

The process is quite simple, simply rename the file, copy it over to your microSD card, and run through the standard procedure for re0flashing your G1. This method has been tested and does indeed work but proceed with caution, as with all firmware hacking of any kind there are risks involved.

Good luck to all those who are going to revert to a much easier hackable firmware. With this new method out there, how many of you are now going to slave away trying to regain control of your handset?

It seems just as quickly as we got root access, Google has come up with a way to prevent it. Jay Freeman (saurik), the man responsible for Cydia and many other amazing developments on the iPhone, has successfully gotten Debian running on the G1. Debian is a free open source OS that is usually used on a computer. Debian on the G1 will allow you to do a lot more than Android is allowing so far. The best part is that it will not at all affect your phones functionality.

With this breakthrough it opens the door to so many opportunities, such as putting a video recording application on the G1. There are instructions for those of you who are brave enough to give it a try, you can find instructions on Jay Freeman’s site.

Right now you can download the PTerminal application from the Android Market. We are told you can use it to start a telnet connection with your G1 and computer. Many call this a jailbreak because it is the only known term for many. Gaining root access in the G1 opens the door for so many new hacks and even a task manager to end applications. No word yet on if the loophole will be patched up or not

• Turn on your phone’s WiFi. This gives your phone an IP you can reach it at.

• Get to a command prompt on your device by using the PTerminal application from the Android Market. (adb shell does not seem to work with these instructions, telnetd does not start up)

• cd system

• cd bin

• telnetd

• netstat (get your phones IP)

• telnet into your phone’s IP from your PC

• you now have roo
