We so often encourage iOS users to switch over to Android, but we don’t really know what would viscerally compel them to. We’re obviously fans and proponents of Android, but comparing Apple’s to apples, is Android really the better platform? IDC: Android takes top honors for 2013 with a 78.6 percent market share

The latest market share report has been released by IDC. This report is offering a look at the numbers for the fourth quarter of 2013, and also for the year as a whole. Some of this, such as how the charts are being dominated by Android will come with little surprise. But there is also the other side of the chart to consider, the bottom, which details the further decline of BlackBerry.

79% of smartphone shipments in 2013 were Android-based handsets

Android has increased its lead. According to new data, roughly 79% of all smartphones shipped globally were Android based handsets. Global smartphone distribution also increased greatly, with 990 million devices being sent out in 2013. If you’re keeping track, that’s 782.1 million Android handsets shipped in 2013.
