CES 2012 Android Wrap-Up

The Consumer Electronics Show is the grandaddy of 'em all when it comes to technology conferences, and with Android's rise to the top of the mobile world, that means there was plenty of phones and tablets on hand. For consumers, the big guns at Samsung, HTC, Motorola and Asus were out in full force. most of the devices seen at the 2012 show will be appearing on shelves in the next six months or so. Here are the ones you'll want to look forward to (be sure to check our CES 2012 portal for all the stories):

Intel subsidiary brings windowed apps to Android

Android, and basically all major mobile OS platforms, don't use a visible windowing system Like OSX, Linux and, uh, Windows. Most of the time that's because there just isn't enough space on a smartphone or tablet screen for more than one application at a time. Wind River, a branch on Intel, has found a way around that restriction, and may make true user window management on Android a reality soon.

LG pairs with Intel, set to debut Android devices at CES 2012

I wouldn't really call 2011 a good year for LG although they have released a few awesome Android devices like the Nitro HD. Hearing leaks about upcoming devices is nothing new especially with CES getting closer and closer. We've heard a few reports that Samsung will be pairing with Intel's new Android-aimed Medfield mobile processor but now it appears that the other Korean manufacturer LG is too -- or maybe it was them all along.

Intel Medfield Developer Android Tablet spotted in the wild

We have been hearing a little bit of chatter and news regarding Intel's upcoming Medfield mobile processor and SoC over the past few days, including some leaked benchmark results and specifications (linked to below). Today we have a little treat for our readers. While the tablet has already been seen before at the Intel Developer Forum conference, we have the tablet out and in the wild -- probably in the wrong hands but we'll take it.

Intel 32nm Medfield mobile processor specs and benchmarks leaked

The popular chip maker Intel that I like to call chipzilla is preparing their own mobile processor or SoC (system on chip) called Medfield that we all have probably heard about a few times. They've shown off a prototype device too and more details on that are below. Today we have some leaked specs and benchmarks that are actually quite impressive that put this new Intel mobile processor right up there with NVIDIA's Tegra 2 and Qualcomm's dual-core chipsets. More competition the better right guys?

Intel gives us a better glimpse at its Android prototype

No, this amazingly sleek phone doesn't exist - yet. It is a prototype that may never surface for the public's use, but nevertheless it is sporting an Intel chip and Android OS. Finally, Intel intends to make a comeback in 2012 by incorporating their technology into both tablets and smartphones. Technology Review was able to test out both of the prototypes, and they state we should see them officially within the first half of 2012.

Android 4.0 Open Source Project released for x86 processors

Google's source code for Android 4.0.1 (Ice Cream Sandwich) has now been released for x86 processors, Intel and AMD alike. It seems there are currently some very obvious compatibility bugs that don't play nicely with Intel chipsets. Sound, ethernet, hardware acceleration, and camera capabilities are currently incompatible. However, developers coding for AMD processors will find that sound, hardware acceleration and WiFi work perfectly fine.

Intel Atom E series processors could get Android Gingerbread in 2012

The world has gone Android crazy over the last few years with the operating system and the smartphones and tablets that run it being very popular with users around the world. Intel is far behind in the mobile game mostly thanks to the fact that its mobile chips are not as power efficient as others on the market and the expense. Intel is reportedly looking to bring a custom version of Android to the Atom E series of processors next year.
