Android Community Weekly: April 15th, 2012

Welcome once again to our weekly update on everything you need to know in the Android universe. If you've neglected your news for the last seven days, take a few minutes to consider the following - everything else is a sideshow. There's a considerable amount of hardware, software, modding and business news to cover in the Android world, so settle in. While no earth-shattering announcements were made this week, those who like big tablets and even bigger acquisitions should be well satisfied.

Instagram for Android gets 5 million downloads in one week

Guess what: Android users really, really like Instagram. Or perhaps it's more accurate to say that lots and lots of people like Instagram, and a lot of them use Android phones and tablets. At least 5 million, to be precise - today the download ticker in the Google Play Store was upgraded to "5-10 million", meaning that at this precise moment it's probably at around 5.1 million total downloads.  For an app that came out exactly one week ago, that's an astounding number... though we've got to point out that they'd be doing a lot better if they hadn't waited a year and a half before releasing a proper Android port.

Android Community Weekly: April 8th, 2012

It's been a surprisingly big week for Android, considering there were no major media shows. The beginning of the official sales for HTC's One family, an exciting concept from Google themselves, and all manner of software updates and rumor greeted the dedicated Android aficionado. If you've been busy in the week leading up to Easter or Passover, why not take this opportunity to come down from your Marshmallow Peep high and take in the recent happenings?

Some iPhone owners aren’t happy about Instagram for Android

Full disclosure: I'm not a fan of Instagram. I see very little value in low-resolution photos with minimal filters posted to an "exclusive" social network, when anyone can do the same with a smartphone and a free editor. That said, I'm glad to see the millions of Android users who were patiently waiting to get into Instagram finally have their patience rewarded. But one group of people isn't so thrilled to see Instagram's potential userbase grow by a couple hundred million: iPhone and other iOS users. And they've taken to Twitter en masse to whine about it. Aww, bless their poor little hipster hearts.
