Android 2.3 Gingerbread Update Confirmed by HTC (sort of)

When asked by Marc Chacksfield of TechRadar wheather or not they'd be updating (specifically) their HTC Desire HD device to Gingerbread, HTC has stated they'd be updating a number of their devices. Does this mean that the Desire HD will be getting the update, or that because they didn't name it specifically, it'd be left out? Either way, "a number of devices" is exciting.

TELUS HTC Desire Android 2.2 Froyo going out OTA

Canadian carrier TELUS has begun to push out its Android 2.2 Froyo update for the HTC Desire.  The product page for the Desire - which launched running Android 2.1 Eclair - has been updated with the message "Upgrade your HTC Desire to Android 2.2 today" along with a list of new features. Android Community reader Donald called TELUS, who confirmed that the Desire update is going out OTA from today.  However it's yet to show up on his handset, which suggests it's a staggered release rather than a mass push-out. [Thanks Donald!]

HTC Desire Z Spreads to Canada

Canadians running wild in their plaid boxer shorts and North of the Border themed Android Anticipation t-shirts is the scene in Canada today as Bell Canada announces that it will soon release the HTC Desire Z. This Desire is one of two we've had our hands on, clicking and flicking, and now all those folks up there above our heads will have the chance to rock around with them too. It's unknown how different this version of the Desire Z will be, if they'll be exactly the same as those available in the states or if the usual slew of complaints by abnormally disturbed customers will be rectified. Bell Canada can handle it, right?

HTC Desire Android 2.2 update due tomorrow says Three UK

UK carrier Three has confirmed that the HTC Desire Android 2.2 update (v2.25.771.1) will be going live on Thursday October 14th at 16:00 Taiwanese time (e.g. 9am UK time).  The update will presumably begin going out OTA at that time, though we're guessing it'll be a staggered roll-out and not every Desire will be offered the new firmware at the same time.

HTC Desire HD ROM Ported to Droid Incredible, Desire, and EVO 4G

Just a few days after the announcement of HTC Desire HD, we heard that the ROM has been extracted. Well we now have a followup of the happenings between then and now. The developers behind the extract have not got it ip and running on the HTC Desire as well as the Droid Incredible and EVO 4G. They are still not perfect, missing camera support, WiFi and 4G, but they are definitely a start.

HTC Desire Lacks 3G for American Use

We can now confirm what many have been expecting, the Desire HD that was announced this week will not be coming to North America. According to a FCC filing, the device actually lacks any 3G radio bands matching those for North American carriers.

White HTC Desire and silver HTC Wildfire special editions hands-on

Bored of the brown or black HTC Desire or the varied hues available for the HTC Wildfire?  We caught up with UK retailer The Carphone Warehouse today, and they let us in on the fact that HTC has prepped two special editions just for them. Coming to shelves in time for the holiday season are a new, white HTC Desire and a silver HTC Wildfire.  The HTC rep we spoke to said this was something of a departure for the company - usually they just prepare an initial range of colors and that's it - but certainly we're glad they did.  The white Desire is particularly appealing, and in the absence of a white iPhone 4 we reckon there'll be plenty of smartphone buyers keen to cross over to Android from iOS. No word on specific availability, but the new models will be the same prices as their regular counterparts: usually from free with a new agreement. [gallery]
