Pelican who is known for their hard, durable, and waterproof cases for everything from cameras to rifles is entering the smartphone business. Pelican has actually offered a few waterproof "cases" in the past, but they were more of a bag or box completely protecting the device. At CES we learned they'll be offering actual every day cases soon, so here's a few hands-on pictures.
Ubuntu for smartphones was announced earlier in the month, and naturally, we wanted to bring you some hands-on coverage from CES. And while this is far from the first time we have seen Android and Ubuntu together, or sometimes a full install of Ubuntu crammed onto a tablet (such as the Nexus 7) -- the version of Ubuntu for smartphones is much nicer and much smoother.
Yota announced a rather intriguing new smartphone called the YotaPhone. As I'm sure many of you are aware, this Android 4.1 Jelly Bean handset sports two displays. The front being a 4.3-inch 720p LCD display, and the rear of the device enjoys a 4.3-inch E-ink screen. It's a neat concept and we were able to enjoy some time with a prototype unit earlier today and we came away rather impressed.
Ascend Mate, we also grabbed a few minutes with the Huawei Ascend D2 smartphone. Though, while this one is a smartphone as compared to the Ascend Mate, with a 5-inch display it still borders on that phablet category. But names aside, the 5-inch display on the Ascend D2 has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and a PPI of 443 -- both nice in every respect.
Huawei press event is currently underway and we managed to steal a few moments with the Ascend Mate before things got underway. The handset, as had been rumored -- is massive. The Ascend Mate does in fact have the 6.1-inch display, however that is not where the massive stops. We could also describe the battery as rather large as it comes in at 4050 mAh.
Samsung Galaxy Note II complete with Verizon's ever expanding and extremely fast 4G LTE has landed on store shelves. As of yesterday the Note II is available in-stores and online from Big Red. Today we'll be taking a peek at this 5.5-inch smartphone phablet in the new Titanium Color, our personal favorite, then giving you a few pictures of the home button "decorations."
Galaxy Note II is finally arriving for everyone here in the US on all major carriers. It's been available from T-Mobile for about a month, AT&T started shipping them to customers a few weeks ago, and Verizon confirmed this morning that their Note II hits shelves tomorrow. Now that the major US carriers all have this 5.5-inch smartphone, lets take a look at Samsung's official case.
announced back in August at IFA 2012 in Berlin, we've been waiting patiently to get our hands on the new Samsung Galaxy Camera. The camera powered by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, running a quad-core processor, and of course being an excellent point and shoot camera at the same time. We just got our own tightly sealed in a large shipping crate so enjoy the uncrating, unboxing, and hands-on video below.
