ASUS has received their fair share of complaints over the past few weeks. From a lack of product availability, GPS issues, and then the bootloader situation. Today our friends over at Anandtech have torn down the Transformer Prime quad-core tablet and revealed their finding on those GPS issues — but didn’t comment much on the bootloader.

When we saw GPS fix on the changelog for the recent software update we weren’t sure what to think although some reports have said it helped. According to Anandtech the GPS issues are due to a design flaw and can only be tweaked — not fixed by updates. Unlike the original Transformer whose rear was covered in plastic, the Prime has an all aluminum design (and a pretty one) but that is the cause of the GPS issues — even if they are minor.

Other aluminum tablets like the T-Mobile Springboard, HTC Flyer or even the iPad all have plastic “windows” if you will, to let out and enhance the wireless signals. And that goes for more than just Bluetooth. Original reports on weak WiFi can also be attributed to the design although our review unit had an excellent wireless connection. It is worth noting that many WiFi only tablets like the iPad don’t have GPS at all — just a thought for those angry with ASUS or the Prime. So there you have it — I’m still getting one.

There’s been a lot of negative feedback from early adopters of the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime, first over some poor GPS performance, then over a bootloader locked with 128-bit encryption. While the former is probably a hardware issue, the latter is a software decision that’s keeping paying customers from taking advantage of the Transformer PRime’s hardware with custom kernels and ROMs. Notebook Italia reports that the Asus Italy has responded to customer outcry. The response is not likely to make many users happy.

It’s a little tough to tell through the filter of Google Translate (unless you happen to speak Italian) but it looks like Asus has adopted adopted a “take it or leave it” position. When responding to battery complaint,s the company says that the Transformer Prime is performing within expected parameters. On GPS issues it mentions that smartphones have a distinct advantage in their 3G connectivity, and that you can simulate this with WiFi. But since (their words, not ours) most owners won’t want to use the tablet as a car or pedestrian navigation unit, they should just use a smartphone. Presumably made by someone else, who will take customer complaints more seriously.

Finally, on the issue of the locked bootloader, Asus Italy notes that it does not support customized software on the Transformer Prime, saying that installing anything but Asus code will void your warranty. They also spent some brief words to address a forum post that they have apparently deleted, to the consternation of some localized owners. You can see the full Google Translation of their response below, with apologies for any confusion:

We see that there was a bit ‘choppy sea of questions about some” hot “. We talk about issues with Prime. It is called the root block. About First it should be noted that the product is not yet available on our the territory. So the issues that SOME (we want to emphasize) users have complained will not affect the units deployed overseas on our territory. Battery life is line with what was promised. Obviously, this parameter depends strongly on the conditions of use and autonomy Maximum use is always referred to a “light” with all the energy saving features active. On the GPS is wrong to compare a product like Prime to a smartphone. First, because smartphones using 3G connectivity to download the table with the positions of the satellites then identify the satellites more quickly. What you can do even Prime WiFi, but only when it is connected. Secondly, because Prime does not come as Car Navigator, nor do we imagine that users will use it while walking the streets of the city, looking for a street or a shop. For those things are just smartphones. Finally speech root: our position in this regard is simple. The product is guaranteed as it is. different firmware altering the basic functionality of the product or push the hardware beyond the standard frequencies will void your warranty and may threaten the reliability and proper functioning of the product itself. Basically to respond to some posts on the bulletin board: we do not delete the “post uncomfortable” because we do not have anything to hide.’s delete spam, misinformation and the news is not official. Keep them on the bulletin board would be to confirm their content. But it is not. It is not appropriate for a user who attends board ASUS Italy will find us to be informed rather of misinformation. We hope with this post that I made clear the misunderstanding.

The staff at ASUS Italy

This response is unlikely to soothe any of the more adamant Transformer Prime owners, and that’s a massive understatement. Essentially the company has taken no responsibility for the problems that users are experiencing, and in fact, recommended entirely separate devices to perform functions that are built in to the hardware. The reaction to customer uproar over the locked bootloader is particularly disappointing, since they haven’t even recognized it as a problem. If you’d like Asus to supply its customers with unlock keys for the encrypted bootloader so they can use custom Amdroid ROMs, be sure to sign this petition.

We haven’t heard from the United States arm of Asus yet, but an official statement will be available soon. Asus has told its US customers to “relax” on its official Facebook page.

The all powerful ASUS Transformer Prime quad-core tablet that seems to be sold out just about everywhere these days is apparently getting a little over the air (OTA) software update today that should make a few users plenty happy. One important note is fixes for GPS, although the bootloader is another story.

The update will bring the Prime to build v8.8.3.33 and upon rebooting you’ll get another update specifically for the camera on the Prime — which is among the best for tablets. The update is said to fix the usual bugs and performance issues but also GPS and improve the cameras performance dramatically. Here’s the changelog:

The cameras performance and auto focus should be improved and the entire devices touch input and controls have also received a small tweak. Some are reporting that this update has locked the bootloader with the 128-bit encryption we mentioned earlier today but that was actually already in place. This could potentially break the root methods currently being used so be sure and proceed with caution or hit XDA if you’re the hacking and modding type.

We received our own Prime for review last month and loved it, not to mention didn’t seem to have GPS or WiFi issues. Either way we are glad to see ASUS updating so fast and can’t wait for Ice Cream Sandwich to hit this awesome and powerful slate soon. Feel free to check for updates and give them a go. Drop us a comment should you have any issues or notice anything new.

The ASUS Transformer Prime has just started arriving at the doorsteps of those lucky enough to pre-order before Christmas, but already has an evident issue with its GPS capabilities. A thread over at XDA-Developers claims that not only does the GPS have a hard time locking onto satellite signals, but some claim it doesn’t work at all. And as a precaution before you try this on your own Transformer Prime – set your device to ‘Airplane Mode’ (or simply disengage from data) to ensure the GPS can lock your position without the help of WiFi.

Just earlier, we noted that a workaround is to engage your WiFi and hope for a quicker lock, but were also hoping the update would solve things. The ASUS Transformer Prime is no doubt the best tablet on the market, but GPS issues may be a serious deal-breaker for some of the treasure hunters out there. ASUS subtly showed the public they were aware of an issue when removing “GPS” as a core feature from its specifications page. Yet, in the notes of the recently pushed 8.8.3.29 update – they insist that it will improve the stability.

The followers of the earlier mentioned XDA thread now state that even after the update many are seeing the same issues as before. Hopefully, ASUS can pull together a fix for this amazing device. It would be a shame to own the best tablet on the market, but at the same time have such an important feature consistently malfunctioning.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer prime is currently king of the hill as far as Android tablets go, but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. As we’ve seen with other high-profile devices, a single critical failure can sound a sour note for an otherwise great piece of tech. For the Transformer Prime, that sour note appears to be the GPS radio, according to a growing thread over at XDA Developers. Users are reporting extremely poor GPS performance when not connected to wireless networks.

Android uses cellular and WiFi networks as a backup method for determining a device’s location, and in the case of the Transformer Prime (which has no cellular connection at this point) WiFi is the best option for getting around this problem. Of course, that’s small comfort to users who want to make their tablets into navigation systems, or just play with Google Maps outside of a WiFi area. At this point, there doesn’t seem to be any other way around the issue.

Many commenters suspect that the all-aluminum construction of the Transformer Prime is to blame. There’s something to be said for that – when smartphones use metal as a primary means of construction, they always leave a plastic portion of the case for the cellular signals to pass through. It could be that during the engineering phase, Asus just didn’t consider other wireless communications essential, or didn’t sufficiently test them. It could also be a software bug, not entirely unlikely in a product so new. We’ll be keeping a lookout for a more permanent solution, should one arise.

Today the popular location-based service provider TeleNav has announced an HTML 5 browser-based navigation service for mobile devices. They’ve been a popular and widely used 3rd party navigation tool on Android for a long time and now their entire suite of location-based services are about to get even better, and easier to access.

TeleNav’s new HTML 5 browser-based system will allow anyone to use their services. Developers will be able to add one simple line of code into their Android app or website to offer customers and users free turn-by-turn navigation, which will then be available to anyone who has a smartphone or tablet. This same feature will be available for websites. Simply add the code to your site and users can instantly get turn-by-turn navigation without leaving your site.

This is an enormous amount of added value for any mobile, location-based website or app focused on travel, shopping, local search, deals and more. With one line of code, you can give your customers one-click access to premium, voice-guided turn-by-turn directions to any location, including hotels, restaurants, merchants or deal locations. Customers never need to leave your app.”

This could potentially take navigation to a completely new level. No more need for an additional application to launch or download for directions, taking up device resources and battery life — everything will be in the browser and quickly closed with a single click. TeleNav has told us users will not be required to be a TeleNav customer and everything will be completely free (for the end user). This creates an awesome opportunity for developers to make directions and more extremely easy — adding value to their site or application.

TeleNav HTML 5 web-based navigation is currently being opened to developers for testing and will be available early next year. Developers can get started right here.

Those of you with a Galaxy S II on Vodafone’s network may have been experiencing some GPS connection issues after your OTA update to 2.3.3. This doesn’t strike me as too surprising, as Samsung Androids have had a brief history of GPS bugs. Whats been happening on these plagued Galaxy S II’s is the GPS either takes too long to home in on your location or simply never does. Unlike some carriers Vodafone definitely took these complaints seriously.

As of now, Vodafone stated that users should “still be able to use location services as normal once their device has locked onto the GPS connection”. Though this doesn’t solve the problem, there isn’t much more a carrier can say until they find out more information on the fix. There’s still no word on when the fix may be, but we’ll keep you posted.

For those of you that don’t receive a signal at all, you may want to consider even rooting your device. It will take you some time reading up on the terminology and processes, but will allow you to load a custom ROM or even roll back to your previous firmware (bug-free). Note: IT DOES VOID YOUR WARRANTY. But definitely don’t rush into it, do your research first. For those of you that have experience rooting already, this may point you in the right direction.

Our friends from TeleNav are all set to launch the new and improved GPS Navigator version 7.1 for Android devices soon. TeleNav has been working hard to bring the most wanted and requested features to the popular navigation tool and this update will do just that. First available for WiMAX devices it will soon follow to other carriers and options as TeleNav comes pre-loaded with many popular smartphones available today. See below for a list of all the newly announced features and more.

TeleNav GPS Navigator 7.1 will bring many new changes and one of the biggest is the new feature and homescreen called “My Dashboard,” for quick and easy access to what on-the-go people need every single day. It will feature real-time traffic overlays with dedicated home or work buttons for easy and quick toggling, as well as give full drive times based on live traffic. TeleNav has also developed three new Android homescreen widgets for the 7.1 update, and drivers now have the option to use fun, custom car icons such as a sports car, hot rod, tank, space ship, motorcycle and more. I think I’ll take the Tank icon please.

We also have local voice search, stay safe and keep your hands on the wheel while using your voice to search over 22 million places and even get user-generated ratings and reviews to quickly decide where to go. You can use voice search to get up-to-date gas prices and even have TeleNav re-route you around a traffic jam, some of these updates sure sound great right? With improved maps and rendering the new version 7.1 should be faster and better than ever. Here is a live demo of the latest from TeleNav.

Here is a list of some key features we can expect to see coming shortly from the folks at TeleNav.

- Multi Route: Recommends up to three routes to your destination with distance and estimated drive times based on traffic conditions
- Favorite and Recent Destinations: Drive to your favorite and recent destinations more quickly and easily with one-touch access on My Dashboard

For those of you who are unaware, the UARS satellite is currently ‘scheduled’ to crash into the surface of the earth. If this news happens to worry you, or if you’re interested in tracking a falling satellite as in crashes into the planet, the Satellite AR app for Android is tracking the satellite live for your viewing pleasure.

The Satellite AR app, which allows users to track satellites in the sky above them, uses the GPS signal on your device as well as its compass if your device has the hardware, to show what lies in the skies above them. The yellow line on the augmented reality shows the projected path of the satellites and can be used to visually track the estimated path of the UARS projectile.

As the satellite falls to the surface of the earth, most of the satellite is expected to disintegrate as it enters the atmosphere, however 26 pieces are expected to crash along a 500 mile path. The largest piece to fall is approximately 500 pounds. For you North American readers, NASA has ruled out the continent as of late Wednesday.

Crowd-sourced mapping and friend-finder app Navizon has released a new version for Android devices, and now users can earn cash rewards for logging WiFi access points and cell towers. The new app – a free download from the Android Market – supports friend groups for Latitude-style tracking, as well as a record of where you’ve travelled.

There’s also live mapping, and the ability to set alerts when you move into a specific location – handy if you need to remind yourself to buy something when you’re near the relevant shop. Support for the people-finder tool Navimote is also baked in.

Still, it’s probably the cash reward scheme that most users will be interested in, as Navizon attempts to boost its database by crowd-sourcing new information. You get 15 points for each new cell tower and 3 points for each new WiFi base station you log (or 2 points for a known cell tower and 1 point for a known WiFi station), all done automatically, and when you reach 10,000 points you can swap it for $15 in cash (via PayPal).

Google has updated Google Maps for Android to v5.3, introducing the new Google Location History dashboard. Working with Latitude’s Location History, the new info pane shows your recent locations as well as how long you’ve spent at work, at home or simply out and about.

As always, you can delete your location history either partially or completely, and it’s only visible by users themselves or the people they share their location with. There’s a new “check in at home” feature, too.

Finally, Google Places with Hotpot now allows you to add your own rating category, so you can leave custom feedback. The Google Maps update is available via the Android Market for devices running 1.6 or higher.

If you have an Android tablet device that lacks onboard GPS, but you would like to use its larger screen for navigation while you drive a new app for Android devices has surfaced that will let you do that. The app is aimed at use on all sorts of Android tablets like the Nook Color that lack onboard GPS. The app is called TetherGPS.

You can gather from the name that it allows GPS navigation by tethering your tablet with an Android device that has GPS onboard via WiFi rather than Bluetooth as you might expect. The software has two parts to make it work.

You have to install the TGPS server on your smartphone and the TGPS client on your Nook or other tablet. Once the software is installed, you can get navigation all you want using your tablet. The app is available right now for $2.99 for the full version and a trial lite version is expected as well.

If you are the security conscious type that wants to protect your important gear like laptops, cars, and other valuables from being stolen you might want to put a GPS tracker on the stuff to keep up with it. LiveViewGPS has a ton of different GPS sensors that will track your gear and even track people.

LiveViewGPS has announced that its GPS asset location devices can now be tracked directly from the screen of your Android phone. That means if your car gets stolen and has a tracker on board you can lead police right to your ride.

Parents can put the trackers on a kids bag or clothing and keep up with a kid wherever they are. The software for the Android platform has real-time tracking capability and can be used by companies with large fleets to track a driver and be sure they are where they should be. An additional module can be installed on vehicles called the RT5 to allow remote start, unlocking, and starter disable.

Let’s talk about this GPS navigator system here, this app upgrade, but first I’ve got to let you know that the upgrade to TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 is only available today on AT&T accounts. Harsh, I know. This update has a list of upgrades, the key components of which begin with Multiple Route Suggestions – each time you bring up your route (or at least the first time,) you get a max of three different suggestions for ways you might go. Click the one you want and there you have it! Quick Search is the next upgraded feature, the user now able to tap the Quick Search box on the home screen and type a landmark, category, business name, or address, this search now also including predictive search technology! Neato!

Speech Recognition is here and expanded, working at a tap from the home page and including many commands such as “How’s the weather?” or “How’s traffic?” We’re hoping it also recognizes “how’s about a milkshake?” Map Overlays are sort of what I just spoke about above with the multiple route suggestions, only there’s one more thing – each of these overlays has information available at a tap. Information like traffic flow, time to get a place, and the locations of traffic cameras. Expanded Points of Interest now include more than 22 million US business locations including airports, historical landmarks, businesses, and basically everywhere else you can dream of.

Have yourself a look-see at a demo here:

TeleNav Enhances Driving Experience with New Version of TeleNav GPS Navigator™
Expanded Speech Recognition, Quick Search, and Multiple Route Suggestions features make it easier and faster to find and navigate to destinations

Sunnyvale, Calif. – Jan. 14, 2011 – TeleNav, Inc. (NASDAQ: TNAV), one of the largest global wireless location-based services providers with more than 18 million paying subscribers, today launched TeleNav GPS Navigator version 6.2 for select Android devices. The latest version of TeleNav GPS Navigator is designed to deliver a faster and more reliable way to navigate, search, and view maps on a mobile device. TeleNav has added new features such as expanded Speech Recognition, Quick Search, Multiple Route Suggestions, enhanced local search content with more listings, and overall improved application speed.

“With this release, we’ve made Navigator easier and faster to use, and also added new capabilities that allow the user to personalize their navigation experience,” said Sal Dhanani, co-founder and vice president of products for TeleNav. “We’re confident that when our users try this version, they’ll immediately benefit from the enhancements we’ve made and enjoy the faster, simpler, more personalized experience.”

A Personalized Experience: Multiple Route Suggestions and Commute Alerts
TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 now offers Multiple Route Suggestions and allows users to choose which route they prefer to take. Once a destination is entered, users are presented with up to three route suggestions overlaid on a map with route distance and estimated drive times. Users can review information for each route and select the option that best fits their personal driving needs.

TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 also includes a new user interface for the existing Commute Alert feature, making it easier for users to set and receive automatic alerts at a pre-selected time to show current traffic conditions along their daily commute. Users can choose to have these alerts sent via e-mail, SMS, or within the TeleNav GPS Navigator application to receive their personal daily commute information before hitting the road.

Search Made Simple
TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 includes Quick Search, a new feature designed to make finding local places quick and easy. Located on the application’s home page, users can simply touch the Quick Search box and type an address, landmark, category (i.e. Italian Food), or a business name. TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 uses predictive search technology to suggest results as the user types their desired location. Quick Search eliminates the need to navigate menus in order to find and drive to a location.

TeleNav has included an expanded Speech Recognition feature, allowing users to press a single button on the home page and speak a command. In addition to the Speech Recognition commands available in previous versions of TeleNav GPS Navigator used for finding addresses (“1130 Kifer Road”) or businesses (“Find gas stations”), TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 provides voice access to more information, for questions such as “How’s the weather” or “How’s traffic.”

TeleNav has also made its local search functionality easier, faster and more comprehensive, adding millions of new Points of Interest (POIs) to its search database, giving TeleNav users access to more than 22 million U.S. business locations, historical landmarks, airports and more.

“There’s nothing more frustrating when using a GPS product than to search for a location and not get a result. If a user can’t find the destination they’re looking for, the quality of the navigation features doesn’t matter,” said Dhanani. “We’ve put a lot of effort into ensuring that our users are able to find the destinations they’re searching for.”

Additional Features and Enhancements
In addition to multiple route options and search enhancements, TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 includes enhanced map performance and design, allowing for faster panning and page refreshes when users view the map screen within the application. The map view also includes one-click options to layer information on the map screen, such as traffic flow information and the locations of traffic cameras.

TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 also features a new POI search screen interface designed to make searching for business categories more simple. When viewing the POI category page, users are presented with an easy to read view of popular business categories and can access those listings with one-click.

Availability

TeleNav GPS Navigator 6.2 is available immediately on the Android Marketplace to AT&T customers (as AT&T Navigator 2.2) using the Samsung Captivate™, HTC Aria, Sony Ericsson Xperia™ X10, or Motorola BACKFLIP™ devices running Android OS version 2.1 or above. The application will be available soon on additional Android devices through other wireless carriers.

Over at XDA Developers user KWKSLVR has formulated a GPS fix for the Samsung Vibrant that was originally implemented by XDA user Plato56. This fix primarily applies to phones made prior to October; to find out when yours was made just look under the battery at a set of numbers marked next to the S/N. Once there, the European date format will read something like “10.09” labeling first the year and then the month.

To apply this fix your own device you should navigate over to XDA Developers by clicking here. You will essentially be removing a few screws and gently bending one of the contacts up to touch the GPS Antenna. KWKSLVR suggests using a flathead screwdriver from a glasses repair kit. After the process make sure your GPS data is cleared using the A-GPS app found in the market or one of the apps/methods listed on the XDA post.

With HTC’s Android-based hands finding their way onto the Internet before any official announcements, it’s time for Motorola’s turn. This time around, it’s the formerly known Begonia device. Better known now, though, as the Motorola Cliq 2. As anyone should expect, this device is making its way to T-Mobile in the United States some time in 2011, and it’s bringing along for the ride a full physical keyboard, and full MOTOBLUR integration.

The device will feature a new hardware keyboard, looking something like an orange spider-web, along with a 5MP camera on the back of the device, paired with an LED flash. You’ll find the standard features, like integrated GPS, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and WiFi b/g/n. There’s rumors that the device will also support WiFi calling, too. CellPassion has it that the device will also feature new MOTOBLUR widgets, along with a new version of the mobile OS. No word on whether or not the device will launch with Android 2.2 or 2.3.

Motorola will more than likely have something to say about the Cliq 2 at CES 2011, and rumored release date is pegged for January 19th.

Reality Scanner Switch: The feature can now be swapped to automatic and into permanent-off mode in the settings.
