Verizon Wireless almost launched Siri on Android smartphones

Apple users have Siri and Android users have Google Now. That is just the way it goes now, however once upon a time, it looked as if Siri was going to be the assistant app for some Android users. Not to mention, some may not even be aware, but before Apple launched Siri as a feature of the iPhone -- Siri was an app for the iPhone and it available by way of the iOS App Store. And not to try and make any iPhone users feel bad about having Siri, once a time Siri was quite a bit more capable.

HTC teases upcoming S-Voice and Siri rival

It looks like HTC has been having some fun this afternoon at the expense of blogs and HTC Android fans everywhere. Tossing up a picture on their official Twitter teasing an upcoming S-Voice and Siri rival voice assistant program -- only for dogs. Everyone quickly jumped on it thinking the dog part was just a cover but yes, this was indeed fake.

Ever since Siri for iOS was first announced we've seen countless similar apps arrive on the Google Play Store. Google themselves have even had voice actions long before Siri was even around, only in a much different manor. Since then we've heard various reports that Google is working on their own service called Google Assistant -- also known as Project Majel -- and apparently the development has just been fast-tracked.

We've been hearing rumblings about a true Siri competitor from Google for months, and it seems to have been given the rather pedestrian label of Google Assistant (a big downgrade from Star Trek shout-out "Majel"). A new report from the Wall Street Journal indicates that Google is investing heavily in semantic search, leveraging the power of its unrivaled data collection to power both its desktop and Android search engines. Google search executive Amit Singhal confirmed that semantic are a big part of their latest initiatives.

Google has had what we all know as "Voice Actions" long before Apple's Siri came along, it just wasn't shown off on the same big stages and bright lights of commercials. Since then, Google's been working on what rumors and reports have called Project Majel -- a Siri-like voice assistant similar to the current voice actions only better. New details are starting to leak that might have also confirmed the name.
