T-Mobile HTC G2 Official Gingerbread Leaked At Support Forum

The HTC G2 is ready for some tasty Gingerbread this morning too. Its bigger brother the G2x saw Gingerbread leak just this morning and now the G2 wants in on the party. If you don’t want to wait for an official over the air update it is available now over on T-Mobile support forums.

With this also officially hitting support forums the OTA update is most likely headed to handsets very soon, but we know plenty of you wont want to wait. Last we heard multiple G2 warranty replacement phones were shipped with 2.3 Gingerbread and my sources are indeed saying this is the same build so most likely this is the official real deal.

As to be expected you WILL lose root, we are not sure how hard root will be to get back given how long the G2 originally took to be rooted so if you’d rather wait for the development community to check it out that isn’t a bad idea for those in need. We are also hearing reports of the phone randomly vibrating as well as some issues with the backlights on the hardware keyboard. T-Mobile G2 hitting End of Life Already?

Smartphones have feelings too and when the term EOL gets placed next to their name they get sad. End of Life is what we are now seeing tied to the HTC T-Mobile G2 in a leaked T-Mobile document. It appears that the popular slider from team magenta will be getting shipped to the Android Cemetery in the coming weeks. It has been missing from the T-Mobile online store for a little while and many stores are out of stock with none en route.

Way back when it released it was a great device and it still considered to be no slouch but they must make way for the HTC Sensation 4G and the Samsung Hercules. You can see our original review of the HTC G2 right here.

Sadly it has yet to receive Gingerbread but we have a feeling that is coming soon as HTC has recently updated a few of their phones to 2.3 Gingerbread. It does say “nearing” EOL so it may still be around for a few more months.

T-Mobiles big day, G-Slate, G2x, and Sidekick 4G all for sale today

Wow, talk about a lot of exciting products all launching at the same time. Usually carriers do one thing at a time. Looks like T-Mobile isn’t wasting any time trying to be the best even though they might become AT&T-Mobile. Today being April 20th, you can now purchase in-store the LG G-Slate, the LG G2x, and the Sidekick 4G. We have reviewed them all this week, so you’ll want to see those for sure.

Lets start with the Sidekick 4G. We all remember how popular that phone was for a long time, the original that is. We have done some exclusive hands-on and you can see that full review here. Next up is the awesome LG G-Slate, the 8.9″ dual-camera 3D capturing, dual-core featuring beast of an Android 3.0 tablet. Check out our full review of the G-Slate here. Last but not least is the LG G2x dual-core Tegra 2 smartphone that just launched on T-Mobile starting today also. We have been playing with it all week long, check out our G2x Review. Looks like our friend Chris Burns has been busy playing with all those toys.

We have also been doing all sorts of tests on these devices. Here are some G2x and Sidekick 4G speedtest results (varies by city/time of day or course). Or if you are stuck between the Thunderbolt, the Atrix, or the G2x check out this little comparison. I know that was a lot to take in, but enjoy it.

T-Mobile G2x is $199 with new 2-year contract, $499 if you buy it outright.
T-Mobile LG G-Slate is launching at $529 with same 2-year contract, or $749 off contract.
and the Sidekick 4G is starting at a surprisingly low price of $99 with new 2-year contract as well. It comes in Black, or Magenta.

CyanogenMod 7 gets a beautiful Statusbar Pulldown Mod

With the ever so changing and continued development by the amazing TeamDouche Developers, CyanogenMod is always improving. They add things daily and push nightly builds for all you crack flashers like myself. With the quick development we at times run into issues where things like MOD’s or Morphs don’t work or are outdated. It’s good they move so fast, but a bad thing for those that like to personalize their Android phone. Those that follow some of the pulldown status bar mod’s for CM7 I’m sure you all know who @rorifree is. If not, he is the man behind this great looking MOD.

Lucky for us the developer rori~ is always updating and keeping track of his MOD so it always seems to be working perfect. For those looking for a good statusbar mod but can’t find one that is almost always compatible with nightly CM7 builds. This MOD is for you. If you read the thread Rori mentions that it should work with all CM7 Nightly’s after the RC1. He also has confirmed it working perfectly with these said phones but should work for all official CM7 phones:

* EVO
* Desire
* Incredible
* MyTouch 4G
* Nexus One

The new design includes:

* Gingerbread themed icons
* Moved carrier name, added 3D text

Not only does it look excellent, but he also gives you a few options on how it will look. The image above you can see the “Clear” button now spans the entire bottom. That is how I have mine. If you’d like it how it was on the side only, rori~ has also included that version as well. Use file HDPI_v1.5F for the full clear bar, and v1.5L for it on the left like default. ViewSonic v350 World’s First Dual-Sim Android Phone Revealed

We’re here at Mobile World Congress 2011 and we’ve got our hands on a ViewSonic v350 Android 2.2 Froyo smartphone. This phone has a brand new feature – dual SIM cards. This feature is possible with Android stitching the two together, making it possible for you to use one for business, one for personal, or perhaps if you’re a traveler, you can switch between the two SIMs on the fly. As the title of this post suggests, we’re pretty sure this is the very first dual-SIM Android smartphone in the world.

The ViewSonic v350 works with Android 2.2 Froyo, no word on upgrades yet but if the ViewPad 4 is any indication, Gingerbread is more than likely on the way. It weighs in at 125 g, has a 5 megapixel camera on the back, and has a 3.5 inch screen with 480 x 320 pixel resolution. One of the really cool features this phone comes with (other than the dual-SIM) is Smart Switch. This is a feature that’s going to be essentially standard from what we can tell on all Android products coming out this wave from ViewSonic.

The v350 they’ve reminded us several times is Google Certified, meaning it’s not second class, essentially, and from what we’ve seen having held the device in our hands, flipping back and forth a bit, it’s going to be a big contender in the market very soon regardless of its Android 2.2 Froyo state. This dual-SIM situation is going to be a thing of the future, at least until they can figure out how to quit using SIMs altogether – believe it!

NOTE the following (above and below) – you can see here how the v350 has both SIM cards underneath its battery on back. One connects via a swinging metal clasp like you’ve seen in such phones as the G2, and the other flatly in the upper right. One of the most evident places you can see the dual-SIM use in the phone is on the call screen, from whens you can call from either SIM – two different call buttons!

iPhone 4 vs. G2 vs. Windows Phone 7: Grill Test!

The smartphone battle continues. As you know there has been a lot of argument lately about which smartphone is the best? With the recent make over of the windows phone operating system, everyone is wondering whether or not it competes with the iPhone, while the increasingly popular Android operating system is looking to take over the mobile phone industry.

No this article isn’t about comparing phone specs, it’s about which phone lasts longest while being grilled. You have probably seen the can it blend videos thats destroy phones in a blender, well this is stunt was done by a grill company and a social media company that wished to pit the phones up against each other in a test of endurance against the heat. Desire Z, DROID Incredible, And G2 Source Code Released on the HTC Developer Center

A lot of people are into digging through official source code, that’s why the HTC Developer Center is around, anyways. Well HTC has just gone and released the source code for the Desire Z, G2, and the Droid Incredible update that was released earlier.

All of the code is available from the HTC Developer Center now.

The T-Mobile G2 overclocked, hits 1.42 GHz

The processor onboard the T-Mobile G2 is the well known 800 MHz Snapdragon which although it’s impressive – it’s not good enough for many. But, after some extensive work from the folks at xda-developers the device is now clocking in a a blazing fast 1.42GHz.

The hack is not very simple and it’s recommended that you know what you’re doing if you choose to try it out. If you’re willing, check out the full detailed instructions over at xda-developers.

HTC Desire Z releasing November 3 on Bell Wireless

We first heard word of the HTC Desire Z launching on Bell yesterday, and now we have a launch date. Coming November 3rd the HTC Sense equipped G2 will be ready for Bell’s super fast HSPA+ network.

Being the first device in Canada even capable of such speeds, the Desire Z will definitely be the choice for users who are looking to utilize the new network. We do not know a price as of yet for subsidized models is set at $499.99 which is very reasonable.

T-Mobile Responds to G2 Tethering and WiFi Calling OTA Update

We know people who have gotten the OTA update for their G2’s enabling WiFi Calling and Tethering. However, it seems T-Mobile is not ready to comment, if the push was a mistake, or premature. T-Mobile provided an official response to Phonescoop detailing their stance on what happened. Their response wasn’t the response we were looking for but at least they acknowledged that it would be coming, when in another story.

“Wi-Fi Calling and tethering/Wi-Fi sharing are not currently supported on the T-Mobile G2. T-Mobile knows these features are important to consumers and we’re working to deliver them to G2 users in the future. We have nothing further to announce at this time.”

They clearly state that they know these features are important to consumers, and that they are currently planning to deliver them in the future. Without a timeline we have nothing to go off of, which could be a good move on T-Mobile’s behalf. Without a timeline it can’t get officially delayed, as we with much software releases, and there will be no disappointment.

We are currently unaware if users are still getting pushed the update, or if it has been cut.

T-Mobile G2 getting OTA Update Bringing WiFi Calling and Tethering

Word is that users are reportedly being pushed an OTA update for the T-Mobile G2. The update is being said to include WiFi calling capabilities as well as bringing USB Tethering and Portable WiFi Hotspot features to the device.

As of now it doesn’t seem the update is widespread, yet. Only a few users have actually been pushed the update, but if this is meant to be a mass OTA update, we can expect other users to be getting it over the coming days.

T-Mobile Responds to G2 Root controversy

Fans of rooting Android devices to make them more useful or different were hit with a road bump this week when the G2 was found to have a chip preventing software modification. After some stir up T-Mobile has now responded to this issue with a short Press Release.

The press release doesn’t give us much information that we didn’t already know. But this chip provides a safety rollback in case the system’s software gets corrupted. It has been said to be a software issue, and the issue has been passed on to HTC for further review.

  The HTC software implementation on the G2 stores some components in read-only memory as a security measure to prevent key operating system software from becoming corrupted and rendering the device inoperable. There is a small subset of highly technical users who may want to modify and re-engineer their devices at the code level, known as “rooting,” but a side effect of HTC’s security measure is that these modifications are temporary and cannot be saved to permanent memory. T-Mobile G2 Available Officially Today

The much hyped T-Mobile G2 is officially available today. It’s long journey to launch: rumors, followed by pictures, pre orders, early arrivals, and hardware problems, is now coming to an end with the official launch date set at today, October 6th 2010. Early reviews are holding steady regardless of the known issues of the devices, and even those with affected handsets with loose hinges recommend the phone and say they prefer it to their old handset.

The phone boasts 4G speeds, which if you’re in the area of T-Mobiles 4G network is proving to be not only fast by reliable as well. The device will cost you $199.99 after $50 mail-in rebate card or $499.99 with no annual contract signing.

T-Mobile G2 has a “Hardware Rootkit,” Prevents modifications

Things are starting to make sense regarding the “Temporary Root” that we head about last week. It is being said that the G2 has an internal microchip that flat-out prevents permanent modifications. This may be the cause of the phone resorting back to it’s original OS one rebooted that the people over at xda developers were having some trouble with.

According to a New America report, this microchip “prevents device owners from making permanent changes that allow custom modifications to the the Android operating system.” So if you install a third party ROM onto your G2, chances are the system will recognize that it’s not it’s native version of the OS and will install the original software.

Now this is not exactly going over too well with customers, a 40+ page forum has popped up over at xda developers. Chances are someone will find a crack to this pesky little “addition/feature” and users will be allowed to install custom ROM’s on their G2’s like they have for all Android phones of the past.

G2 “Temporary Root” Available now

Just as the device started hitting door steps, the T-Mobile G2 has been rooted. With a phone that was shipped with a stock version of Android 2.2, it comes as no surprise that the device wasn’t too hard to root. But, at least for now, there is only one issue – it’s not permanent.

For now it’s just a temporary root meaning that once you reboot, root access vanishes. This is only a small problem that will likely be fixed today – or soon after, but until then if you follow the process over at the XDA-Developers forums, just make sure you do not restart your phone.

Early T-Mobile G2 hardware issues, Missing storage, loose hinges [Video]

The highly anticipated T-Mobile G2 is making it’s way into eager customers hands. However, it’s not all good news. Early reports from a few close with the device have noticed that their devices have shipped with hinges that are not fully attached, and even – in some reports – their devices are not shipping with the correct amount of storage.

The hinge problem may not be directly annoying in everyday use of the phone, but it could be unsettling knowing your phone is not as solid as you would expect it to be. The real issue here is the hinge is especially loose and the screen is hanging when the phone is held upside down, as seen in the image above. A more practical annoying fault of this issue is when you’re holding the phone at some angles, the screen will snap shut.

The second issue involves the storage shipping inside the devices not being what users have actually ordered. In some cases shipped G2 that are said to contain 4GB of internal storage and were clocking in with a total of 2GB. We, as well, have no idea how such a mix up would happen but we expect either exchanges for customers made available or a larger microSD card to compensate for the storage loss. More on this issue will definitely be coming in the coming days.
