Archos has issued another round of firmware updates for their mildly popular Archos G9 80 and 101 Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablets. the Archos G9 line might not be the best hardware around, or the nicest, but for a great price they are impressive tablets that run a pretty stock version of Android 4.0 ICS. More details on yesterdays update are available after the break.

The update started rolling out yesterday and will fix a slew of bug and performance should be steadily improved. According to the change log provided by Archos you can expect better WiFi, GPS improvements, as well as less random reboots. Here’s the full list of changes with the firmware update:

Version 4.0.6 – May 3rd, 2012

-Wi-Fi: fix more disconnect cases happening on some access points
-GPS: increase stability of GPS
-HDMI: do not propose overscan setting when TV supports underscan
-muSD: improve reliability of card insertion detection
-muSD: fix read/write permission issue occurring with some applications
-Applications: fix platform reboot occurring sometimes after a while when using high CPU demanding applications

As a reminder, version 4.0.6 is the internal build name from Archos themselves. This is not Android 4.0.6 folks, you’ll still be on Android 4.0.3 after updating to the latest firmware — confusing I know. Archos has stated that the new firmware is rolling out now for both the Archos G9 80 and larger 101 tablets and users should be getting it as we speak. Feel free to manually check for updates if you’d rather not wait, then report back in our comment section below with thoughts or if you see any new problems.

The brand new ASUS Transformer Pad 300, also known as the TF300T, has been available for a few weeks and already ASUS is pushing a firmware update that is bringing tons of new features, and making a couple of quick changes. Not only have they released an update, but ASUS has also made the source code available for download to those interested.

It looks like ASUS has released a quick firmware update to version V9.4.3.17 for three countries, including the US, as well as a version for the Japan model. You can check for updates now, or hit the links below to get the new firmware updates today.
Along with the update ASUS has also been so kind as to release the TF300T’s source code for those that like to get dirty with Android code. Two versions are available for download supporting the current, and updated firmware versions for Android 4.0.3 ICS and are available at the link below. The update should also be rolling out to devices so be sure and check for updates if you’re rocking the TF300T from ASUS.

If you own an Archos G9 and recently updated to Android 4.0 …

Archos recently released Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich for the G9 series of their Android tablets. It has only been available for a short time but it looks like they are on top of things and have already started fixing some minor bugs. If you own an Archos G9 and recently updated to Android 4.0 ICS this latest firmware update today should solve some of those WiFi issues some have been reporting. More details and change-log after the break.

Their naming scheme is a bit confusing but the Archos G9′s are currently running on Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich, but the build from Archos rolling out today is 4.0.5 — not Ice Cream Sandwich, but that is the version of Archos’ own firmware. Apparently with ICS they’ve had a few issues with WiFi going extremely slow after being on for more than a few minutes. Some users have also reported no audio or audio issues with HDMI-out and streaming video or games. Archos has quickly fixed the problems and the update is available now for those interested.

As always the update should arrive over the air for the devices, but you can manually go to Archos.com and download the update yourself should you chose to take that route. For more information and the full change log head here to get started. We wish all manufacturers issued updates this fast, because Ice Cream Sandwich for the Archos tablets has only been available for a few weeks. If you’ve been having any of the above mentioned problems get the latest firmware and let us know in the comment section below how things go.

Google TV has taken a beating in the last few months, especially Logitech’s flagship Revue set top box. To add insult to injury, GTV Source reports that a considerable number of users who recently bought the Revue found that it couldn’t authenticate with Google’s servers, making the device a curvy and expensive paperweight. Apparently the issue is only happening to newer Revue boxes, though that’s hardly a comfort to those affected.

There’s nothing for it except to return the unit to Logitech and wait for a replacement. The error comes from an issue with the device’s firmware, and according to a Logitech executive, there’s nothing that users can do to fix the problem themselves. (Just for the record: a locked bootloader doesn’t help, Logitech.) He recommends either returning the Revue to the retailer for an exchange or calling Logitech for an RMA replacement. I’d go with the second option, since the retailer might just swap you for a similarly affected unit.

Logitech has recently stopped manufacturing the Revue, with no plans to continue in the immediate future. The Google TV program has cost the company 100 million dollars in losses, along with other poor performing hardware. That leaves Sony as the sole manufacturer of Google TV hardware for the time being, though more partners may be announced at CES. All this is very disappointing for those who picked up a cheap $100 Revue waiting on the Honeycomb update, which allows for Android Market access.

The recently released Archos G9 tablets have only been on the market a short period and they are already receiving a few firmware updates from Archos. It’s nice to see them working so quickly to bring updates to their tablets and we can only hope the same applies for Ice Cream Sandwich. The Archos 80 G9 went on sale last month and received its first OTA firmware update early this month. Today Archos informed us another just 14 days later is available now for download.

Earlier in the month the update brought tons of new features such as native Google Talk with video chat and some improved memory management, it also fixed a few issues and bugs some early adopters were having. Today the update takes the Archos G9 series 80 and 101 tablets from firmware 3.2.46 to the latest version 3.2.56 and is available right now by checking for updates on your device. Archos said to just hit yes and enjoy the latest update, according to their Twitter and Facebook pages.

The new firmware improvements and features are:
– Further improved memory management
– Additional user agents available in browser settings
– Faster wifi reconnect after sleep/disconnect
– As well as many minor fixes and improvements

The big one here is the memory management. While we have a dual-core 1.0 GHz OMAP 4 processor on the Archos, we sadly only have 512MB of RAM and for that they’ve enhanced the memory management to keep things running smoothly. They’ve included their own application task killer, something I’ve not used since my G1 and claim that should help performance but on a dual-core tablet we shouldn’t have to use those anyways. We’ll take all the memory management and improvements we can get at this point. They also mention the low battery warning wont be so obnoxious and intrusive.

As usual you can manually go to settings > about tablet > check for updates to get the new firmware rolling — as well as manually download and update right from Archos.com and a full list of the change-log can be found by clicking here. Feel free to leave us any comments below regarding your experience with the new firmware. Enjoy!

The AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II has only been out a few short weeks, but we have already started seeing a few leaks appear for the smartphone. Samsung was quick to release the source code for the AT&T variant and now it seems a firmware update is in the works and has already been leaked, more details below.

The Samsung Galaxy S II on AT&T is as close to the original as possible and a great smartphone, you can see our full review here. While initially there aren’t many bugs that need immediate attention as usual there are a few minor kinks that need worked out, and Samsung is already hard at work we are happy to say. The current build shipping with the phone is UCKH7 but we now have a newer build titled UCKJ1 but we are still sifting through the details.

According to our sources over at RootzWiki the leaked firmware brings about a few improvements, but also adds an issue or two. Samsung has smoothed out the homescreen lag some were experiencing and improved it in general, they’ve also fixed a lockscreen bug. We are hearing that the new firmware causes the home button to lose haptic feedback (vibrate) though so we aren’t sure what that is about. One new feature is the Android 2.3 overscroll glow effect has now been added, neat huh?

With any sort of leak like this you can flash it but at your own risk, we hold no liability and only bring you the news. All the details and download can be found on RootzWiki thanks to designgears.

The brand new Archos G9 Honeycomb tablets have only been out a short time and Archos has already started pushing a firmware OTA update to the devices. The Archos 80 went up for sale late last month and we quickly snagged one up for some hands-on time. The new update from Archos fixes plenty of bugs, and adds some new features like Google Talk so head on past the break for full details.

The Archos G9 tablets are their first entry into the Honeycomb tablet game and are aiming at the low priced segment. Our hands-on (linked to above) shows plenty of the new tablet from Archos and our full review is coming shortly. Like most updates it adds a number of features and fixes a number of bugs. Here are a few of the highlights right from Archos:

-Google talk is now part of the firmware and comes pre-loaded.
-Improved volume control (better volume range, less glitches on notifications) leading to faster gaming experience on some 3rd party applications
-Improved camera quality in high and low light condition
-Added Flash acceleration support
-Better quality SD video upscaling (e.g. on 1080p display)
-Improved memory management for smaller memory footprint
-more

For more information you can head over to the Archos support page and see all the changes in the change-log by clicking here.

The latest Archos Firmware version 3.2.46 is available now for those who already own the Archos G9 tablet and can be updated right from the device. Head to menu > settings > about tablet > then just hit “Firmware Update” and start the download. It should only take but a few minutes and upon rebooting you should be on firmware version 3.2.46 and be able to enjoy all the bug fixes, Google Talk and more.

Samsung’s Galaxy S II may be fresh to the market, but that hasn’t stopped the company’s engineers from pushing out updates. In fact, we’ve seen two firmware updates arrive through Samsung’s Kies app in short order, bringing the GSII up to i9100XWKE2.

The first left Swype more responsive and apparently also addressed some connectivity issues, while the second fixed the Galaxy S II’s automatic brightness. The firmware is also rootable, which is good news for those looking forward to all the third-party hacks we’re promised.

You’ll need to hook your Galaxy S II up to Kies in order to download the update – we’ve tried through the smartphone’s onboard firmware update tool, and it can’t find any new builds. Let us know how you get on in the comments, and if you’re still on the fence regarding the GSII then check out our full review!

The long-awaited multitouch addition to the X10 will work in both the browser and Google Maps; Sony Ericsson is hoping feature tweaks like these will salve the pain of never getting an Android OS update beyond 2.1.

There’s also some on-device video editing support and more languages; the full list of changes is below. The X10 and X8 update can be installed manually, via USB, or Sony Ericsson say that most markets will have an OTA option as well.

Toshiba has pushed out the promised firmware update for the Folio 100 tablet, with update v.2.2.5.0053 expected to address the responsiveness and multimedia processing issues which prompted retailer PC World to yank the slate from shelves. According to The Tech Blog, the new firmware does indeed address much of the lag.

However, reports from xda-developers suggest that this isn’t quite enough to bring the Folio 100 fully up to scratch, with the tablet still prone to going into deep sleep mode and demanding a reboot to get it working once more. The new firmware also lacks the Flash Player 10.1 plugin, which has to be installed separately.

1) screen/soft-touch responsiveness

2) lag fixes

3) Most importantly Pinch-and-Zoom capability for web-browsing and others.

4) Improved viewability (I think)

5) Smoother video/audio processing.

Reports claim that Samsung may soon roll out a new firmware update for the Galaxy Tab that will block all jailbreaks, roots and other custom firmware. The new JM6 A, C, and D builds are all planned to prevent unauthorized firmware from running.

Developers are hoping that there will be a software workaround coming, however, a crack might require soldering or other physical methods to gain the same access as they have with the current official code. This is only present in the test firmware and it’s not currently known whether it will be present in the final releases.

Now if this software gets sent to devices this means that not only will the Samsung Galaxy Tab be locked, but it will officially be more restrictive than the iPad. Apple currently patches security holes that jailbreaks get through, but iOS is not very hard to crack, and they’re not working on making it extremely difficult.

Google has always claimed that Android is more open, however this has also lead to manufacturers lock down the hardware as much as they’d like. We will report on further information as it’s made available in the coming weeks with the impending release.

Among the priority fixes are more stable Bluetooth connections – particularly when using the LiveView with non-Sony Ericsson devices. The company is also keen to point out that, despite some reports, the LiveView firmware is indeed upgradable, which does leave us a little more enthusiastic about the sub-display’s potential.

“As I’ve read some reviews of LiveView™ I’ve noticed that some users are reporting issues with e.g. the connection between the device and the phone. Especially when using phones from our competitors. This is very unfortunate and has been escalated to our developers. They have been working hard on identifying the issues and have solutions coming.

In some reviews I have also read comments about the LiveView™ device not being upgradable. I just want to confirm that that is not the case. There will be a software update coming for the device itself. The work is ongoing and the plan is to make this updated software available as an update through SE Update Service in January. Some minor things are also possible to solve within the LiveView™ Application in the phone and updates of that app will be issued on Android Market as for any app.” Sony Ericsson

Barnes & Noble has just released a minor update to its NOOKcolor firmware. The update will bring in improved WiFi connectivity and browser experience as well as some minor bug fixes.

The update will begin rolling out over the next few days. However, if you’d like to manually download the update, follow the instructions below:

To get the update immediately, you can manually download the software update to your computer at any time and then copy it onto your NOOKcolor. Simply follow the steps below. If you choose to wait for an automatic download when you’re connected to Wi-Fi, updates will begin rolling out to devices over the next few days:

Manual Download Instructions

1. From your computer, click here for the software update file. Select Save and select Desktop as the location. Do NOT modify or change the downloaded file’s name in any way.

2. Tap Settings on your NOOKcolor’s Quick Nav Bar, then tap Device Info and make sure your NOOKcolor battery charge is at 20% or more.

3. Connect your NOOKcolor to your computer using the USB cable that came with your NOOKcolor. A new, removable drive should show up in My Computer (Mac users will see the NOOKcolor drive appear on the desktop or in devices). You should also see a “USB Mode” message on your NOOKcolor screen.

4. From your computer, drag and drop the downloaded file onto the main directory of the NOOKcolor drive. Do NOT unzip the file. You should not create a new folder on the NOOKcolor drive or add the file to any other existing folder.

5. Eject or Safely Remove the NOOKcolor drive after the file transfer is complete.

6. Your NOOKcolor will automatically recognize the file after a few minutes or when it goes to sleep mode, and proceed to install the updates.

7. Please do not turn off your NOOKcolor during the installation process.

8. Once the installation is completed, your NOOKcolor will automatically restart and go to the Home screen.

9. On the bottom left status bar a green “n” will appear. Tap on it; the software has been successfully updated.

NOOKcolor must remain turned on while the update is being installed. Once the software is installed, NOOKcolor will reboot itself back to the Home screen. To verify you have the latest update, tap Settings from the Quick Nav Bar, tap Device Info, then tap About Your NOOKcolor and check to see that your software version is 1.0.1

Congratulations, your NOOKcolor has been updated! If you need additional help, please call Digital Customer Service support at 1-800-843-2665.

Android Community reader Donald called TELUS, who confirmed that the Desire update is going out OTA from today. However it’s yet to show up on his handset, which suggests it’s a staggered release rather than a mass push-out.

[Thanks Donald!]
