Samsung patents dual-screen tablet design

One screen good, two screens better. That seems to be the thinking behind one of Samsung's latest awarded patent filings, spotted in the USPTO by Forbes. The patent shows a clamshell design not dissimilar to the Sony Tablet P, but using a larger, flatter form factor that's more like a traditional laptop in shape. Also of note is a removable controller/pointer that slides into a slot along the hinge.

NEC shows off its Android MEDIAS hardware for MWC

First it was LG, now another initiated manufacturer is giving us the goods before the big show. Japanese OEM NEC has displayed a trio of new high-end MEDIAS phones set to make their public debut at Mobile World Congress next week, All three are relatively large devices (especially for the Japanese market) running Ice Cream Sandwich, and all of them appear to be in the prototype stage. The interest is mostly academic for us since NEC rarely makes its hardware available outside of Asia, but at least one of the phones will strike a chord with those who love to see unique form factors. Impress Watch caught a look at them in an early press event.

Sony Tablet P taken apart by FCC

The Sony Tablet P dual-screen tablet recently received an official FCC tear down - right on schedule before it makes its way over to the US. I've never seen the insides of a dual-screen tablet, but then again there aren't that many to go by. From the photos included in the below gallery, it's obvious the wireless components are laid out in the lower clamshell.

LG Switch: More dreams of a dual-screen phone [Video]

Whoa, check out this awesome new concept design featuring an LG phone with two displays. Yes this is just a concept but it's still fun to imagine and the video below is worth a look in itself. This isn't the Kyocera Echo idea, instead we have a display on the front -- and on the back. a two-sided Android smartphone for the ultimate multitasker.

LG Flip II Dual-screen Android Phone Spotted Again

Recently a few more pictures have leaked out for the LG Flip II or so we are calling it. This is a dual-screen slider headed to T-Mobile by LG that not only has dual screens but also a hardware keyboard. It's a different take on design that is for sure, but I could see developers cooking up some cool and unique features for that extra screen real estate.

Sony S1 and S2 Details Leak, Including Possible Announcement Date

Some new details just came to light regarding Sony's pair of upcoming Android tablets. The pair of devices were shown off to a lucky few last month, but have not been officially announced yet (S1 and S2 are still code names). A source has spoken up revealing several new tidbits about the pair, including that Sony is expected to announce them officially just before the IFA trade show in Berlin, which takes place September 2-7.

Samsung Execs Reveal Future Plans

A meeting last night held by Samsung executives held some gems in the form of potential new Android devices over the next year. The meeting, which was specifically to discuss ways that Samsung will be going after Apple's market share, was not an explicitly Android event, so we can't be absolutely sure that these will be Android devices, but the chances are good and there were some exciting things to be heard.

Kyocera Echo needs App Developers

Just looking at the sweet dual screen design of the Kyocera Echo, it's easy to see the potential. More real estate means more capability for apps. And being a dual, split screen can also mean more specific development that needs to be done on Android apps it will use. Kyocera knows it, so they're enacting a program to entice more app developers to create content for the dual screen platform. Developers will have access to the Echo Software Development Kit and other tools which will enable them to optimize their apps for the dual screen platform.
