I know many of you loyal readers and Android enthusiasts would never even dream of switching to Windows Phone 7, nor would I. Today we have learned that Microsoft thinks showing off their phone user interface for everyone to see and try themselves might help their chances. I must admit this is actually an awesome idea. Android phone users can now get a little taste of Windows Phone 7 right on their device — in a matter of seconds. More details are available after my awesomely confusing image below.

Looking at my image we clearly have the Android 2.3 powered HTC Sensation but wait are those capacitive Android buttons, is that Ice Cream Sandwich up top? Or wait, maybe it’s just CyanogenMod 7 with my favorite Cyanbread theme. All running with Windows Phone 7. I’m actually sort of enjoying that photo to be honest.

If you haven’t tried a Windows Phone 7 device down at a local store Microsoft aims to get your dollars by giving you a quick glance and personal hands-on time with Windows Phone 7 right from your Android smartphone. All you need to do is go to the Microsoft Windows Phone 7 demo page from your mobile device and enjoy the tasty Mango (name for WP7′s OS). This will load a surprisingly smooth and nice mock-up of Phone 7 and their tiles. You’ll be able to enter a few different areas like the application tray, contacts, calender and things of that nature. It’s actually quite neat and even though I’d never ever consider making the change I did enjoy the quick demo.

Apparently this will also work on those i*hones too if anyone has one of those devices (For Barista’s see this video). It doesn’t give us an extremely close look but either way this was pretty cool and I figured you’d all like to give it a try. It’s an awesome marketing tool I must admit — well done Microsoft. Now stop suing everyone and their dogs in the world of Android. K thx bye.

SO you’re interested in getting some fresh details on this lovely new phone from Samsung before we have a full review up, yes? Perhaps some examples of how the cameras look on front and in back? Why, that just happens to be what we’ve got whipped up for you here! On the front you’re going to see a photo of the 1.3 megapixel variety, but you’ll find when you work with the phone that there’s no option (natively) to take video with that camera – you’re only supposed to be using that for video chat. On the back, a massive 8 megapixel camera photo and 720p captured video. Plus a bonus!

Above what you’re witnessing is the 8 megapixel back-facing camera photo. This photo is taken in noon-ish indirect sunlight with no unnatural light hitting it. It’s a photo of some lovely little Android toys you know so well with the custom-painted by yours truly Android Community Android front and center. Doesn’t he look lovely? I spent like an hour painting those eyeballs.

Next what you’re seeing is the 720p quality video capture. This test is done with my faithful assistant Susi – we’re doing the hallway run test as made famous by our review of the Acer Iconia Tab A500 10.1-inch tablet. Behold!

NOTE: to get more info on the Samsung Infuse 4G, head to our all-encompassing portal.

What you see above finally is the front-facing camera taking a 1.3 megapixel photo of the same subject matter. You’ll notice the change in quality around the edges of each subject. You’ll also notice that the photo really isn’t terrible – think only a few years ago this photo would have seemed magnificent for a cellphone, front or back. Next it’s a BONUS – a back-facing 8 megapixel photo taken in a dark environment with the LED flash flashing. It’s some old shoes of mine and a cord or two – notice how fresh these sneakers still seem.

That’s quality!

So we’re at Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona, just minding our own business at one of the greener looking booths in the entire place, the NVIDIA booth, and what do we see? It’s an ATRIX 4G, and it’s attached to one of those lovely Laptop Docks. What do you know?! And there’s a fellow walking around just ready and rarin to go, with all the knowledge we needed for him to have to make a lovely video on the subject. Thusly we asked him if he had a minute to do such a video, and what do you know? He said yes. So let’s have a look, shall we?

What you’re about to witness is no less than a professional NVIDIA man showing us the official Laptop Dock for the brand spanking new Motorola ATRIX 4G. This demo has the interesting perspective of an NVIDIA man instead of a Motorola man (a Motorola man meaning the one we had demo for us the HD dock you’ll see at the end of this video.) Here we get a perspective on the laptop dock specifically, with again a nutshelled look at the phone itself. Discover the usefulness of having a laptop situation with your superphone, and see if it’s worth the $300 – $600 to you.

And after you’ve had a peek, head back to the rest of the coverage we’ve got on this subject, the first item being a review of the very dock we’re talking about here: Motorola ATRIX 4G Laptop Dock Review. Next have a peek at the other side of the equation with a Motorola ATRIX 4G HD Dock Demo and a full review of the thing as well: Motorola ATRIX 4G HD Dock Review. Finish off that magical triad with a big fat full review of the whole shebang: Full Motorola ATRIX 4G Review. It doesn’t stop there then of course, the full experience continues with an ATRIX 4G Full System Dump Here and Now and a super effective Morotola ATRIX 4G Hands On and Unboxing.

One of the many phones the crew here on Android Community and our sister site SlashGear got our hands on back a few weeks ago at CES 2011 was none other than the LG Optimus 2X. It seems today that there’s lots of coverage of this phone flying around today, and back when we released that video (on SlashGear,) didn’t also post it to Android Community – so you might never have seen it! Now we’ve got an extra couple of minutes here on a relatively slow news day, so we thought we’d give you an awesome refresher. Behold the awesome power of the LG Optimus 2X!

You’ll be taken on this awesome journey by our pal Vincent Nguyen, who provides us with the following:
Linpack Benchmark
Android Marketplace
Game Demo
Burst Mode
Recording in 1080p
Playback in 1080p
Website Load Task Comparison between Tegra 2 powering this LG Optimus 2X vs Droid X

Vince begins his journey by downloading our official Android Community Android app – this app is totally free to download and has absolutely no ads, allowing you to browse both news and the discussion forums here on Android Community. Once Vince flips back and forth a few times between different ways you can interact with AC, he heads back to the Android Markeplace and downloads Linpack, aka “Linpack for Android” by GreeneComputing – this being the app he’ll use to benchmark the device. Once the benchmark is run, he opens Dungeon Defenders, a game that’s since become very popular for testing the 3D capabilities of powerful smartphones.

Once the game demo is complete, Vince take a look at the camera interface. The camera on the back of this device is 8 Megapixels, the first demo being burst mode (taking 6 pictures in a row.) Next there’s some 1080p video recording as well as playback. They do this recording in a relatively low-light environment then play it back in the stock video player. It’s difficult to see through the camera being used to record the demo of course, but we’ve got assurances from everyone who was there at the time that it was totally lovely.

Next is the Optimus 2X vs Droid X in loading webpages, both of them starting at Google.com navigate to SlashGear.com – the Optimus 2X appears to move 3 or 4 times as fast as the Droid X. Mega-impressive.

The LG Optimus 2X was one of the key devices at this year’s CES. Being one of the first devices to be announced with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 dual-core processor, the device will definitely be the powerhouse it was rumored to be. And now we have over 20 minutes of video time with the device in a hands-on video from the official German LG blog.

The demo is quite lengthy, but it provides a detailed look at the upcoming devices power. Scrolling is smooth, folders open quickly, and all around it’s pretty refined. Now we can tell it needs a little bit more software optimization before it can fully utilize the Tegra 2′s power, but hopefully that’s coming before release.

For even more LG Optimus 2X coverage, check out our official preview of the device where we put the device to test with basic functions such as gameplay, HD playback as well as conducting a Linpack test.

We have been following up with Team Whiskey very closely, a well known development team that reaches out to XDA Developers. Our staff has installed their Trinity v1.3 ROM and can vouch for its stability in every area of functionality. This is Team Whiskey’s latest release and has proved some amazing quadrant scores in comparison to the stock ROM on the Nexus S.

You can clearly see how much higher the Trinity ROM + Kernal’s CPU score is compared to stock. The voltage was also increased from the standard 1.2V to 1.4V. When the voltage is pushed higher, the memory increases as well.

As we know, quadrant scores aren’t everything. We need our smartphones to be extremely reliable and would prefer them to be as fast as possible. That’s why we decided all of our visitors at Android Community deserve a true tour of an overclocked Nexus S. The below video displays the fastest phone we have yet to cover.

Right on CES Eve, the night before CES 2011 starts, Notion Ink posts a new video demo. That’s totally crazy. This demo is the most confusing of the pack thus far, with broken English throughout the whole video about Portrait Mode, playing some flash video – from YouTube? Take a peek at it below.

This video show the browser in portrait mode. They say that most of the apps you’ll be using where you read a lot that portrait mode will be enabled. But… the video is in landscape mode? So… Just take a look. Tell us if you can figure out what’s going on here.

Presents for everyone! Look at this little batch of videos sent out by Notion Ink over the holiday weekend, just jamming away as the release date for the tablet comes ever closer. The hardware AND the software are showed off in a lovely set of vids that also includes an HDMI demo as well as a demo of a “false digitizer” over a Wifi connection. Benchmarking against an iPad, iPhone and other Android browsers too!

As Chris notes, there seems to have been some confusion in the past about what’s going on as far as digitizer tech in the Adam. There will be no active digitizer, instead the 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen will be able to act as a massive trackpad for your computer. Also instead, if you’ve got a capacitive stylus, you could use the device for drawing if you’d like. Will it replace a Wacom graphics tablet? Probably not.

It seems as though Adam will be able to work with USB modems in the future, the biggest obstacle being drivers being developed for them to work properly with the system. In the videos here you’ll se a demo of the Adam boot-animation as well as the browser, and you’ll see that all the controls are running down a narrow bar on the left side, pop-out buttons for tab management appearing as well. As far as benchmarking goes, Adam scores 51,049 in Rightware’s BrowserMark benchmarking tool, versus the iPad’s 38,620 and the Nexus One’s 23,726. That’s freaking amazing. And there’s multitouch, of course. Look, look, look!

Hooray for the continuation of Notion Ink’s Adam tablet running some wild Android wackiness. Today there’s a drawing and image editing app “Canvas.” This is a slightly more entertaining application that’s been show in the first few videos, both drawing and editing images – the video demo below just shows the drawing bit. Get pumped up because not only is there different brush types and a fabulous selection of other tools, there’s LAYERS!

Notion Ink says this version of the app is “alpha,” letting the world know that they eventually want you to be able to do much more as the full launch of Adam works. They say this will be useful in movie creation via storyboarding – I can imaging it would be! So simple, so sweet. They intend for the app to be helpful for both pro-artists and for kids, (all of whom LOVE to paint, of course.) The clip below is at super speed, but it looks like it’s awesome nonetheless.

What we have all been waiting for regarding the Notion Ink Adam is finally here (besides the launch information and pre-order information, which, of course, came before we even saw a the device live) – the tablet has finally been demoed on video.

The video show the custom Eden UI, multitasking panel engine, and apps – including ereader, Canvas paint application, and more. The Eden UI is looking as impressive as we have seen hinted at. It is definitely a departure from what we’re used to with an Android-based device with it’s three apps running at a time that can be swiped left and right or rearranged at will.

Performance wise, it’s definitely not perfect – but not many Android devices are. Panel switching introduces some lag, but the pinch to zoom seem to be running smoothly. We’re not able to tell much else from the live videos and will be posting more information once we get our hands on the much anticipated tablet.

The folks over at Sony Ericsson have been making some tiny (and yet major) improvements to the functionality of some of the cooler bits of the XPERIA X10. Below you’ll see a video (and read some words that I’ve typed up incase you’re not in a place where you can watch) of Sony Ericsson rep Rikard Skogberg showing off these finer points, ready to go on an XPERIA X10 he’s got in hands. Really tiny updates, really helpful things. This is how all updating should go.

Skogberg begins by opening the Timescape application: one with tiles of all of your friends updates in a 3D display which may have a slicker movement now since the last update. Before, you would click any tile and it would show a snippet of an update, from whens you could click into whatever app it came from and see the full text. NOW when you click the tiles, the text automatically starts scrolling in the tile so you don’t have to exit out to a different app to read the full message. You can also post your status updates here now without exiting out to different apps to do so.

Then he mentions the update to Android 2.1 and opens the Social Phone Book. In the phone book, you can see all your contacts and when you click a person’s picture, you get a bar of icons which lead to calling, opening contact info, texting, mailing, and Google Talk. There’s also a green dot beside each picture of a person when they are online on Google Talk. You can see a partial status update from Facebook or Google Talk. NOTE: if the person in your contact book has the same name in all places on the list of apps this connects to, their contact info will be created automatically. If not, you can enter it in manually. The images in your phonebook come automatically from each person’s Facebook profile pic.

Then there’s something that Skogberg displays that a lot of people may have missed, that which is the “Long Press.” This occurs when you press a contact and hold down for a double count rather than just tapping. This opens a menu which includes Edit number before call, Add to Favourites (notice the out-of-US spelling), Join contacts, Edit contact, and Delete contact. Once you decide to call a person, a different Call Screen appears with their profile pic again, but this time with options like going back, Speaker phone, Mute, Dialpad, and end call (just incase the person you’re dialing isn’t in on the demo.)

A few months ago Myriad Group introduced a new way to speed up Android’s Dalvik Virtual Machine to drastically improve the speed of the system. Since then there hasn’t been much information on the progress of this project until now. This system works on the MIPS architecture and could potentially replace the Dalvik VM completely.

With Dalvik Turbo VM, MIPS licensees can create SoCs with faster, more complex applications and richer game graphics optimized for Android smartphones and other high-performance consumer devices without requiring significant increases in device memory. The VM also provides substantial battery life improvements when running resource intensive tasks, all while retaining full compatibility with existing software. Myriad’s Dalvik Turbo VM is operational on all current versions of Android up to and including versions 2.1 (Éclair) and soon to be available for 2.2 (Froyo).

This new system promises speed increases up to 5 times faster than stock. It does a similar job as JIT which is responsible for the speed increases that is found in Android 2.2. It is said that this technology is compatible with every version of Android. If this is the case imagining how fast a phone would be with Froyo and this laid on top of it. That would be either a blazing fast phone or it will crash due to incompatibility. Guess we’ll have to wait to see if it can work in conjunction with JIT. If you would like to help develop the MIPS system you could head over to MIPSAndroid.org and get started.

Intel had their new Atom processor on display at this year’s Computex, Engadget had a few representatives at the expo where they got some hands on time with multiple different Android devices. One of which is this handset powered by Intel first chip designed for Android. The prototype phone used in this demo was manufactured by a company called Aava.

There’s nothing groundbreaking to see in the video posted by Engadget other than proof of concept. The handset didn’t appear to be faster than the latest “Superphones” that have been released recently. In fact, they said it’s not as fast as a Snapdragon. This is Intel’s first dance with android and the handset isn’t a finally build. Knowing how Intel works, they will get the hang of how Android handles things and should come up with something really well.

Acer is at it again, just last week when their CEO demonstrated an Acer tablet another one emerges. In the past Acer has said they will not be entering the tablet market but it appears that decision has been overturned. This is the second leak in as many weeks of an Acer branded Android tablet.

This is said to be an eBook that is most likely going to be targeted at the Kindle’s audience. It will feature an unnamed version of Android, most likely 1.6, and Qualcomm’s MSM7227 processor. Some say this tablet looks like a slightly bigger version of the iPhone. The guys over at Engadget got some hands on time with this device and the results were not favorable. It is said that it is very unresponsive and a bit slow. This is likely an early prototype so things could change before it is released, if it ever is.

Our friends over at Frandroid got their hands on a Galaxy S and recorded this video of it in action. The game being played is Nova from Gameloft. From what I can see, it performs as advertised. This game has a lot of action and there is no lag at all. The graphics looks really good and the game play is fluid and fast. Check out the video below, you is the judge.

No matter what the product is I think it’s safe to say we love to see a nice unboxing. And the pot is even sweeter when the device is turned on for a short demo. Noah from phonedog received the upcoming Garmin-Asus android phone from-Mobile. And he was nice enough to share the unboxing with all of us.

This is a great unboxing, you get the see the device and all the accessories one at a time. Then there is a quick look at the custom UI that this phone introduces to Android. The Garminifone is expected to be a navigating powerhouse. For now its stuck on Android 1.6, it has a 3.5 inch screen which is quickly becoming too small for today’s standards.

There are some nice accessories included with this device that may make up for some of its short comings. It has a few things that can get you by when traveling. There is an international-ready power adapter and a cigarette lighter charger. A dock is also included, these things don’t usually come with phones so they will save you a few dollars.
