2-click Windows root and unlock method developed for the Galaxy Nexus

As far as we're concerned, if you went out and bought a Samsung Galaxy Nexus on launch day, you have a responsibility to unlock that bootloader, root Android and get cracking with some custom mods and ROMs. Even though the process isn't terribly difficult, there are a good number of steps and checks, and not everyone is up for the challenge. Those of you who have been holding off for an easier method can thank "WugFresh" at GalaxyNexusForum.com, who's developed an easy Windows application that automates every step of the unlock process on Windows.

Asus US: Transformer Prime getting ICS January 12th, unlocked bootloader later

It's been quite a tumultuous 24 hours for Asus, as user complaints about the high-end Eee Pad Transformer Prime have mounted. The main concern among Android modders is the locked and encrypted bootloader, which keeps users from installing their own ROMs, kernels, recoveries and what have you. Poor GPS performance when not connected to networks is also an issue. Refuting public relations posts that came out of Italy earlier this morning, Asus' United States branch said via Facebook that they'd be providing Android users with a bootloader unlock tool some time in the future.

CyanogenMod 7 gives official nightly support to LG Optimus phones

I know, I know, all the news out of CyanogenMod seems to be about the Ice Cream Sandwich-based CyanogenMod 9. But CyanogenMod 7 (gingerbread) is still going strong, and many a satisfied user is running the latest nightly on his or her smartphone. Following in the footsteps of some Sony Ericsson phones last week, a handful of LG models are getting official nightly support from the CyanogenMod team. The LG Optimus 3D, Optimus Pro, Optimus Hub, Optimus Black and the LG Thrill will all be getting nightly ROMs while CM7 is still in active development.

CyanogenMod 9 for the Galaxy Nexus may get an LTE toggle

One of my favorite features of later versions of CyanogenMod is the series of included and customizable toggles built right into the notification drawer. Not only is it convenient as all get out, it saves valuable space on your home screen usually occupied by the default power widget. When the Galaxy Nexus was released for Verizon, more than a few users were disappointed that Ice Cream Sandwich's implementation of 4G LTE blocked previous quick 4G toggles available in the Android Market. At least one developer seems to have found a work-around, and his implementation is currently be considered for inclusion in CyangoenMod 9.

Transformer Prime users upset over 128-bit locked bootloader

There's nothing to take the wind out of a new flagship device's sales like a big power-user buzzkill. A considerable amount of drama came Motorola's way when it revealed that the DROID RAZR would arrive with a locked bootloader, and now it seems that the Android tablet of the hour is getting the same treatment. XDA-Developers members have called for a nuisance campaign after discovering that the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime comes with a bootloader locked with 128-bit encryption, making custom kernels and most community-developed ROMs impossible to run on the advanced tablet.

Roll your own CyanogenMod with CMC Compiler

Custom ROMs are part of what makes Android awesome, and there's a sufficient variety to satiate everyone. Well... almost everyone. Have you ever wanted to remove certain features from a ROM before even installing it, making for a lean, mean software machine? If you're a user of the popular CyanogenMod family of custom ROMs, now you can, with a new compiler tool from XDA member "lithid-cm". The Cyanogenmod Compiler ("CMC") allows almost anyone to pick and chose from a variety of CyanogenMod features and compile their own ROM on your computer - no supermodder skills required.

A handy list of active Ice Cream Sandwich ports

While you're reading this, hundreds of people are hard at work on getting Ice Cream Sandwich onto current Android hardware, long before manufacturers and carriers will be sending out official updates. We've covered some of the earliest and most interesting ICS projects on this very site, but there's just too many to cover every single one. Luckily, we don't have to: a friendly member of the XDA-Developers forum has put together a list of all the active Ice Cream Sandwich ports on the prolific modder site.

Notion Ink’s Adam tablet gets Ice Cream Sandwich port

Remember that revolutionary Adam tablet that launched early this year? The one that ran a customized Gingerbread interface over a Pixel Qi display, and changed the way we used technology forever? The one that was almost universally panned after months of delays failed to deliver a satisfactory tablet experience? Well, that tablet just got a little better: an intrepid modder has loaded up an Ice Cream Sandwich ROM on the Notion Ink Adam, instantly making it about 200% more desirable.
