App retailer GetJar scores venture funds

Thanks to skyrocketing sales of the Android platform amongst smart-phone users, independent mobile app retailer GetJar has scored $25 million in venture capital from such angels as Tiger Global Management and Accel Partners. With previous investments, the total amount that GetJar has raised to create a serious Android market outlet has surpassed over $40 million. The venture funds will enable GetJar to expand sales, marketing and engineering in order to create a leading Android app portal in a rapidly growing retail market of Android based app stores.

BlackBerry PlayBook and Handsets to Run Android Apps?

It appears that the Boy Genius Report has received several words from several sources on the following bit of news: RIM may very well be seriously considering a feature that would let BlackBerry users run Android apps on their BlackBerry devices. This is big news, especially since PlayBook is set to be a big contender in the oncoming tablet wars, with Android/BlackBerry compatibility, its power to hold the eyes of consumers may have just doubled. Research in Motion (RIM) appears to have been trying to find the road that it'd like to walk down as far as how the Java environment it's got working now will work in its upcoming QNX tablet and handsets. RIM has stated publicly that it is looking to get a Java virtual machine running on PlayBook, but they've not yet appeared to have decided what Java VM they'll end up using.

80 Percent of Verizon Phones sold are Android, BlackBerry devices in steep decline

What better way to see Android's cannibalization of RIM's BlackBerry than a graph of Verizon's smartphone sales over the 20 months? All Things Digital points to data compiled by ITG Investment Research analyst Matthew Goodman that visually details the decrease in BlackBerry sales as the market becomes more sophisticated and varied. According to the data, 80 percent of smartphone sales were Android devices in which 46 percent were DROID branded. RIM sure has a growing issue on its hands as new devices compete with the business space in mobile sales. [Via All Things Digital]

New Nielsen Data reveals Android tied iOS in “Most Desired” Operating System

Research firm Nielsen has now published their results for their October 2010 set of surveys. Android is clearly still growing strong with almost 22.7-percent of the smartphone market in the US (which is about 29.7-percent of mobile devices).

It works for smartphone and other portable devices, and works by applying a custom battery door receiver, then placing that device on the Powermat pad. If you'll remember, this sort of thing has already existed in the original Palm Pre's Touchstone charging dock, but isn't quite to the greatness of mass application yet. You've just gotta get this one now, because, you know, how could anyone wait for such a lovely thang?

Oh I bet you didn't know that devices such as these got to vote this electoral season, did you? They don't get to vote on humans, don't worry, and technically it isn't them voting, it's their users, and they're getting voted on, not representatives for them. Retrevo, master of census taking in strange places, recently had a vote across the whole 50 nifty United States and found that of the three: Android, Blackberry, and iPhone, the victor was none other than our friend the robot.

Gartner expects that Symbian and Android together will account for 59.8 percent of the total worldwide mobile OS market by 2014. They expect the 2 to be split almost equally - Symbian with 30.2 percent, and Android with 29.6 percent.

NPD: Android Passes BlackBerry in Second Quarter

Android is a train that just won't stop. Not that there's anything wrong with that at all, but it's still impressive to see it as it rushes through numbers. And sales. A recent report from Nielson stated that Android was in top shape, actually surpassing the iPhone in quarterly sales. However, a new, supporting report from the NPD Group shows that not only did Android surpass iOS, but it also managed to top Research In Motion's BlackBerry platform.
