B&N NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ available in the UK
Barnes & Noble's tablets are ready to go head to head with Apple's iPad and iPad mini in the UK. The tablets use the latest version of B&N's customized version of Android. This customized version of the OS replaces the standard Android, which could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your preferences. Either way, these tablets come in at a competitive price point, and they could shake up the tablet market in the UK.

So, what's the one feature missing from Barnes & Noble's Nook hardware? If you said "Ice Cream Sandwich", you're... well you're right, but not in this context. If you said "a camera for web chat".... well you're probably right there too. But for a retail-focused company like Barnes & Noble, one of the things they're missing is NFC. According to a Forbes interview with B&N CEO William Lynch, they won't be missing it for long.

Business makes some strange bedfellows, and somewhere in the patent suit that Microsoft lobbed at Barnes & Noble a corporate romance bloomed. Now the Redmond software giant has invested a whopping $300 million into the bookseller's newly formed digital and college division, which will almost certainly take over the growing Nook e-reader business. Microsoft will own 17.6% of the unnamed subsidiary, with Barnes & Noble owning the other 82.4% (virtual value: $1.4 billion).

Nook Simple Touch update to add front-lighted screen
The Nook Simple Touch doesn't get enough love - it's a portable, long-lasting touch sensitive e-reader for a hundred bucks. Oh, and it runs Android, with an active community of ROMs and mods behind it. And according to some leaked material from manufacturer Barnes and Noble, its one weakness may soon be put to rest. The Digital Reader found a pamphlet for a new version of the Nook Simple Touch, with an integrated "Glowlight" - a front-mounted LED that lights up the black and white e-ink screen at night. These styles of screen lights used to be all the rage in the days of black and white phones and Palm Pilots.

Nook Touch hack enables multi-touch on e-ink
The Nook Color and Nook Tablet get the most attention out of Barnes & Noble's e-reader line, at least from an Android modder standpoint, but many forget that all of the Nook devices run Android - and all have been thoroughly modded. Even the humble Nook Touch has been thoroughly rooted with custom apps and ROMs, though the e-ink reader's hardware limitation prevents some of the more basic Android tasks from being completed.
