We gave the Transformer Pad TF300 a pretty glowing review, and why not: it combines all the charms of the Tegra 3-powered Transformer Prime with a lower price, while simultaneously doing away with the latter’s reception issues. Speaking of the Tegra 3, we’re not sure what processor the unit at the FCC is running. A week ago we’d have assumed it was using a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, but with Nvidia’s new Icera 410 radio, AT&T’s LTE network no longer presents a technical barrier for the Tegra 3.

ASUS has announced its intention to release 3G and LTE tablets in Asia and Europe (not the least of which is the drool-inducing Padfone) but has so far remained mum on the Americas. Even without an official statement, the FCC filing gets us excited, and more so than the usual fare – including AT&T’s LTE bands indicates that this device is more targeted than the generally unlocked phones and tablets that go through the commission. Here’s hoping we see some quad-core, LTE, Ice Cream Sandwich tablet action in the States soon.

The source goes on to say that it is indeed a 7-inch tablet, lending even more credence to the idea that it’s a copied or reworked version of the $250 MeMO 370T. ASUS’ Tegra 3-powered budget machine has been conspicuously absent since its announcement earlier this year, and NVIDIA recently showed off plans to bring quad-core tablets (with a definite ASUS teaser image) to market at a price of $200.

What’s more interesting at this point is what software it’ll be running. The source was unclear on whether or not the “Nexus Tablet” would be running Jelly Bean, if in fact that is the next version of Android. Google will certainly have some new software to show off at Google I/O, but whether or not it’s ready for prime time is yet to be determined. An incremental update, say Android 4.1 or 4.5, seems more likely.

As always with news from unverified sources, treat this rumor as just that: rumor. We haven’t heard anything about a Nexus Tablet from a source that we’d consider 100% dependable yet. That said, we’re certainly hoping to see something in San Francisco in two months’ time, and hear about Google’s potential plans for expanding the Nexus program to as many as five manufacturers.

According to sources this tablet will most likely be 7-inches as expected, but has been undergoing a few small changes otherwise it would have been possibly released this month. DigiTimes reports that around 600,000 ASUS/Google tablets have been ordered and will see production, arriving sometime in June. This puts it right in time for Google I/O in late June (we’ll be there live) so hopefully that will give us additional details.

Google nor ASUS has confirmed any of these reports, and for now these rumors are still just flowing out of the supply chains. With recent talks of NVIDIA’s new KAI budget-friendly quad-core processor this could end up being what we see next month. A 7-inch quad-core Google Play Nexus tablet made by ASUS and sold in the Google Play Store for the awesome price point of $199. If initial sales look promising that 600,000 device order might get filled quite fast. Stay tuned for more details and hopefully we hear more as Google I/O approaches.

Of course, ASUS was already headed in that direction – the much-anticipated MeMO 370T was equipped with a 7-inch screen and a Tegra 3 when last we saw it. Rumor (so far unsubstantiated) has it that this $250 model has been scrapped, and possibly replaced with Google’s much-rumored Nexus Tablet. With even more rumors indicating that Google will expand to more than one manufacturer for its next developer hardware, we’re essentially left with a lot of information and no knowledge.

Given the slide above spotted in a recent demonstration, Kai might be a reference design, a completed concept machine intended for manufacturers to copy and modify. The practice is common with chip suppliers like Intel and Qualcomm, and every new graphics card is based on a reference design. We’d have to wait and see if manufacturers took the bait, but that tablet in the slide looks an awful lot like a generic ASUS design…

ASUS is staying true to their word about working with the developer community and this unlock tool starts right where the Prime left off. A simple download and instructions are all you need to fully unlock the Transformer Pad 300, from there you can root, and install some 3rd party ROM’s once they start coming out. In early May the update was available for the US, and many other regions but today this appears to be rolling out for the US model. Bumping the build version from 9.4.3.23 to 9.4.3.29 and bringing along a few small changes. Just like the Transformer Prime, the TF300 OTA is helping out the WiFi and camera as both of those versions have been changed. The TF300 doesn’t suffer the same WiFi issues as the Prime, but any improvements are more than welcome.

According to Droid-Life the update is rather small and no noticeable changes were made other than the very few mentioned above. If you’ve got one give it a try and let us know what has changed. As far as hardware goes, there’s a ton of stuff to sift through in the CTIA sections above, but the biggest for US consumers is probably the official announcement of the HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE for Verizon. Check out our hands-on here. And those of you who were waiting for a One series Verizon phone (like the new One X on AT&T) had best stop waiting. Kyocera showed off a couple of new ICS phones, the Rise and the Hydro. LG’s latest flagship, the LS970 “Eclipse 4G LTE” was leaked, and Sony announced the Xperia GX and SX models for Japan. Toshiba’s Tegra 3-powered Excite 10 tablet is now on sale, and AT&T’s Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD won’t be, ever.

On the software side, the international Galaxy Note was officially updated to Ice Cream Sandwich and AT&T’s version got a second leak. Like its other tablets, ASUS updated the Eee Pad Slider to Android 4.0. Popular iOS app Flipboard was supposed to be a Galaxy S III exclusive, but the APK leaked and you can download it now. Facebook laid out plans for its App Center app showcase, on both the web and mobile platforms.

The Eee Pad Slider hasn’t received the same acclaim or popularity as its Transformer brothers, which is probably why no one’s waiting for a Slider Prime. It shares most of its specs with the Transformer 101, but instead of a keyboard dock it gets a slide-out QWERTY tray built into the case. The moving parts and somewhat awkward form factor haven’t won it the same popularity as ASUS’ slates, but there are still a few who find it useful.

The update for the least popular of ASUS’ high-end tablets does the company credit. We can only hope that more manufacturers will take their lead and resolve for (mostly) timely updates for all their Android devices, not just the ones which sell well. After all, a customer in a purchasing minority is still a customer. Good on ya, ASUS.

The guys at Gizmo Slip make a life out of testing gadgets to the extreme. Most of the time, this boils down to temperature and drop tests to see how solid they are. When a gadget fails a drop test and shatters its screen, as in the case of one very unlucky Transformer Prime, they tend to make their own entertainment by completing the destruction. In this case, they did so with the aid of a 9mm pistol and what looks like a 12-gauge shotgun.

The Transformer Prime didn’t hold up so well to three full metal jacket rounds, but was absolutely decimated by a single shell of buckshot. There’s a valuable lesson to be learned here, folks: don’t drop your consumer electronics on the ground and break the screen. But if you do, blow apart what’s left in an interesting way, put it on YouTube, then sit back and wait for the accolades from the rare combinations of redneck and tech geek like yours truly.

Hardware news of the non-galactic variety was dominated by the HTC Incredible 4G. We spotted it on Droid Does, it showed off its NFC capabilities, and it flaunted an extended battery. Most exciting of all, it might be headed for release as soon as May 10th. We saw leaked images from Sony of its monster-spec “Hayabusa” LT29i and the mid-range (and chunky) Tapioca ST21i. T-Mobile’s version of the HTC One S is now on sale. Motorola’s DROID RAZR HD is getting some more exposure, as is the rumored and now all but confirmed Galaxy Note for T-Mobile. Samsung is rumored to be making yet another Nexus phone for Google, and an unsubstantiated report shows Verizon getting an HTC Galaxy Note competitor and the Galaxy S III.

Speaking of the Galaxy S III (you knew it was coming): among many, many other stories, we got official confirmation from Samsung that it’ll be running a new quad-core Exynos processor. Unfortunately the US version may have to stick with dual-core for LTE connectivity, something that seems to be verified by an AnTutu benchmark with an existing dual-core Exynos processor. Samsung has started their official marketing campaign with a teaser website and sheepish video. We also saw a leaked product manual that looks pretty legitimate, and no less than three “leaked” photos that don’t.

On the software side of things, we’ve got official Ice Cream Sandwich updates for the Acer Iconia Tab A500 and A100 and the Sony Tablet S, leaked ICS updates for the HTC Amaze 4G, Motorola DROID RAZR and Samsung GSII Epic 4G Touch, and schedules for ICS updates on T-Mobile and Verizon. The Sony Xperia S and HTC One X both received ports of popular custom ROM CyanogenMod 9. Verizon Motorola LTE phones can now be ported to AT&T and T-Mobile, albeit only with 2G data speeds. Notably, a Google Android developer shed some depressing light on the length of Android update delays.

While we’re sure that the GPS dongle works, it’s certainly not an ideal solution. The plastic device plugs into the main docking port (blocking both charging and the keyboard dock) and affecting the Prime’s svelte profile in a less than aesthetically pleasing way. The problems with GPS reception, and WiFi to a lesser extent, come from the all-aluminum chassis of the Prime, something that ASUS rectified with the new Transformer Pad 300 model.

If you haven’t ordered your free dongle yet, you might want to hurry – presumably there’s a limited supply of them, and ASUS will stop receiving applications on July 31st. Based on initial user feedback, the free shipping takes about a week. Even if you don’t use the Transformer Prime’s GPS function, you might want it anyway. And as unsightly as the plastic extension is, it’s better than hearing “you’re holding it wrong.”

Quadrant

Quadrant has become the go-to benchmark app for Android, though to be honest it’s no more or less valid than any other benchmark available. In Quadrant’s tests, which measure CPU, RAM, write speed, and 2D and 3D graphics capabilities, the Transformer Prime scored 4338, while the Transformer Pad TF300 got 3993. The Transformer Prime wins by a factor of 8.64%. (See full-sized screenshot in the Gallery.)

AnTuTu

AnTuTu is becoming a more popular benchmark alternative, due in no small part to its comparative database… which the Transformer Prime ruled, until the Samsung Galaxy S III came along. AnTuTu measures the CPU integer and float-point calculations, RAM, 2D and 3D graphics, database access, and SD card read and write speed. For AnTuTu the Transformer Prime scored 10,863, while the TF300 scored 9,421. Again, the advantage goes to the Transformer Prime, by a factor of 15.3%.

CF-Bench

Lastly we have CF-Bench, an app that isn’t used nearly as often as the other two, but which  tests many more parameters, including MIPS performance and Java rendering for both read and write values. In CF-Bench, the Transformer Prime got an overall score of 12,640, while the Transformer Pad TF 300 scored 10,554. The Prime wins by a dramatic factor of 19.7%.

Conclusions

The old adage that you get what you pay for would seem to apply here: the Transformer Prime beats out the Transformer Pad TF300 by anywhere from just below 10% to almost 20% when it comes to pure tests of capability. But that shouldn’t deter potential Transformer Pad TF300 buyers – after all, the cheaper tablet costs 25% less than the Prime for the $379 16GB model, and the difference in storage can easily be overcome by a cheap MicroSD card.

At the end of the day, both the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime and the Transformer Pad TF300 are great choices, but the TF300 is an especially great choice if you’re looking to save money and still want an excellent 10-inch tablet experience. Those looking for more utility should consider that for the just a little more than the price of a 32GB Transformer Prime, you could get  16GB TF 300 and a dock as well. But if you want the absolute best in Android tablet performance, the Transformer Prime is still the way to go.

The TF101 was updated to Android 4.0 ICS back in February, and this is the first update since so users should be happy to see some changes and improvements. We aren’t seeing anything major other than a few bugs and specifically that change to help the lag issues, but here is the changelog as provided by ASUS:

Plenty of new hardware was either announced or leaked this week: first of all, HTC’s One S finally got a release date on T-Mobile. You can pick one up on April 25th, and if you go to Costco you’ll get it for ten bucks off with a free $25 gift card. AT&T has started taking pre-orders for the HTC One X, but if you pre-order it from Radio Shack you’ll get a cool $50 off. In other HTC news, the “One J” (a modified One S) was spotted for Japanese carrier KDDI. We also saw glimpses of the Motorola DROID RAZR HD (AKA the DROID Fighter) via some sample camera shots.

Meizu finally announced the long-rumored MX Quad-core, surprisingly running a Samsung Exynos processor. Huawei’s super-skinny Ascend P1 is coming in May, as is the ASUS Padfone… but only for Europe at the moment. Acer released the Tegra 3-sporting Iconia Tab A510 for your purchasing pleasure, and a new leak indicates that the Samsung Galaxy Note is headed for T-Mobile sometime soon. The Galaxy Beam and its built-in pico projector were spotted in the FCC, complete with AT&T bands.

Of course a weekly wrap-up wouldn’t be complete without some Galaxy S III rumors. But this week we can put at least a few to rest: Samsung has officially announced “The Next Galaxy” press event for London on May 3rd. We’ll be there to cover it, naturally. The company teased us with Facebook glimpses and a countdown set for tomorrow. A few disguised/pre-production Galaxy S IIIs are finally making it out of Samsung – one posed for some photos, and one for a full walkthrough video.

There’s plenty to talk about on the software side of things. Acer’s Iconia Tab A500 and A100 tablets will be updated to ICS later this week, and while Samsung’s still mum on a date for the Galaxy Note’s ICS upgrade they were kind enough to show off some of the “premium suite” features. Unlocked Galaxy S II owners in the UK and the US can download their Android 4.0 updates via Kies. ASUS is taking reservations for the Transformer Prime dongle, which should alleviate those low GPS signals.

As far as apps go, Google Drive seems like a done deal. Leaks indicate that it’ll be launching this upcoming week, and the app itself was spotted on a developer phone. Google updated Chrome for Android with bookmark sync and a much-needed desktop mode. Spotify updated with a beta that integrates with Ice Cream Sandwich – it’s so fast and pretty we had to do a hands-on. Popular apps Draw Something and Temple Run added new features. Oh, and that patent war between Apple and Samsung may finally be drawing to a close: their two CEOs have agreed to start talking about settlements.

Here at Android Community we’ve had an unusually busy week. Just today we posted our review of ASUS’ brand-new Transformer Pad TF300. You can order one now, and if you’re in market for a 10-inch tablet, you should. We reviewed HTC’s One V, not to mention the Media Link streaming device and the official first-party cases for the One X. Even though the TF300 is budget oriented, that does not mean you will be giving up tons of performance to get it. You still get the 10.1″ screen with a 1280×800 resolution. 1GB of RAM and the Tegra 3 quad-core processor. Where they save the valuable dollars is by changing the backing to a plastic one from the metal one of the Prime as well as a slighty lower quality display. Not necessarily bad cuts if you consider the plastic back should help with the antenna reception for the Wi-Fi. Also as part of the Transformer family, you get the option for the docking keyboard to add to its flexibility.

If you took the original Transformer and the Transformer Prime and blended them together, you’d get something like the Transformer Pad TF300. It keeps the slim profile of the Transformer Prime and the 10-inch screen and connection capabilities of both, but uses a plastic body instead of an all-metal chassis. This is a little cheaper, but it should help alleviate the poor WiFi and GPS issues that Prime owners faced – you’ll find no dongles here. The TF300 is slightly chunkier than the Prime, but still considerably smaller than the original Transformer.

You’ve got quite a few color and storage options for the Transformer Pad TF300: the first Royal Blue units will cost $379 and $399 for the 16GB and 32GB versions available April 23rd, with Torch Red and Iceberg White versions of both coming down the pipeline in June. The color-matched keyboard docks will cost $149. The pricing for the TF300 is very competitive, considering that the 8GB Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 2 is expected to retail at the $400 mark.

And speaking of the dock – it’s essentially the same one that fits the Transformer Prime, with a few material changes and color options. Working with the Transformer Pad TF300 in what we’ve come to think of as “Netbook Mode” is the same as it ever was – far from perfect, but much more flexible than the tablet alone. Android-specific shortcut keys and the extended battery options are appreciated, but the small and somewhat finicky trackpad isn’t.

Navigating the tablet interface via the dock is simple, though all too often you’ll still need to resort to touch control. Gamers and mobile professionals might as well add a Bluetooth mouse if they’re springing for the dock. The dock adds a full-sized SD card slot to the tablets’ MicroSD slot, plus a secondary battery that charges the tablet while attached. You can also charge both through a single cable when the tablet is inserted.

As far as guts go, you get the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, a gigabyte of DDR3 RAM, a 10-inch IPS LCD 1280×800 screen and the standard Bluetooth/WiFi combo. Mobile wireless versions of the Transformer Pad TF300 are in the works, but won’t be available any time soon. Weight is an interesting issue: the tablet itself weighs 1.3 pounds, with the dock coming in at half that. This makes the Transformer Pad TF300 “top-heavy” when used in the dock.

Compared to the Transformer Prime, the Transformer Pad TF300 holds up well considering the lower price and cheaper materials. The screens are identical save for the IPS+ rating on the Prime, making it slightly more comfy to use for an extended period of time. The plastic body makes the Transformer Pad TF300 feel lighter, even if it isn’t’ actually much of a margin. From a hardware perspective, it’s a solid choice for those who don’t want to spend the extra money.

Software & Benchmarks

If the hardware of the TF300 and the Prime is similar, then the software is nearly identical. The Transformer Pad TF300 is ASUS first tablet to ship with Ice Cream Sandwich, which shares much of the same code and ASUS/NVIDIA extras as the Android 4.0.3 update to the Prime. ASUS’ additions don’t get in the way of Android – a few custom icons and menu options to take advantage of the unique hardware are all you’ll see.

One of these is the Performance Mode and Power-Save Mode, accessible by the ICS pop-up menu. This takes advantage of the 4-PLUS-1 design of the Tegra 3, with a fifth core that engages during periods of low processor activity. You’ll want to keep an eye on the manual switch if you often find yourself mixing gaming and traveling.

Another unique aspect of the software (though unique only to Tegra devices, not the Transformer line) is NVIDIA’s Tegra Zone. This app grants access to some exclusive Tegra-optimized games that you won’t find on the Google Play Store, though some of them wind up there eventually. Check out a few in the video below:

Those who want some top-end power out of their tablet won’t be disappointed, and at this price point it’s a very compelling inclusion. The nearest Tegra 3 competitor in price is the Acer Iconia Tab A510, at $70 more expensive for the base model and $50 more than the equivalent 32GB TF300. And considering that ASUS’ build quality is generally a step above Acer’s, even on the lower-end Transformer, it’s hard to recommend the more expensive Iconia based on performance.

The various benchmarks show the TF300 as lagging slightly behind the Transformer Prime with its Ice Cream Sandwich update. This might be something of a sour note, if it weren’t for the fact that the Transformer Prime is already the fastest Android tablet out there. On the AnTuTu tests, the TF300 is running around 90% of the Transformer Prime’s Ice Cream Sandwich scores. This should be more than enough for the most enthusiastic gamer, and will probably remain so for at least a year as Android games become more and more complex.

Camera

The Transformer Pad TF300′s camera is the same one found on the Prime: an 8-megapixel shooter with 1080p video capability and an F/2.2 lens. There’s one important difference, beyond the cosmetically larger lens: the TF300 has no LED flash. It’s a disappointing exclusion considering that even cheap phones come with a flash these days, but perhaps ASUS wanted another differentiation between the two models.

You can see samples of the camera’s photos and videos below – quite good, especially considering that most tablets tend to skimp in the camera department. The only real difference here is the lack of flash, making nighttime and indoor shots much harder to take with consistency. Color and sharpness are great, easily as good as any of the later smartphones on our review table, with the exception of the HTC One X and HTC One S.

Battery

The Transformer series has always been pretty solid when it comes to battery life, and that tradition continues here. We’ve gotten more than 7 hours of continuous operation with some 3D gaming and video streaming thrown in, so users who keep it to less intensive tasks can expect to meet or beat ASUS’ 8.5-hour battery life rating on the Transformer Pad TF300. Connect the dock (which can be charged separately or at the same time) and you’ll boost longevity all the way up to 12 hours easily. You can thank the Tegra 3′s well-documented power management for the excellent battery life. 

Wrap-Up

The Transformer Pad TF300 is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a WiFi tablet, and not just those who can’t afford the Transformer Prime. The combination of performance, features and price may be the best we’ve seen yet from any Android tablet. Up-to-date software and ASUS’ typically solid build quality make it a tempting device for anyone in the market.

The few sacrifices made to reach the price point – plastic construction, no LED flash and a slightly slower processor – are more than worth it in my opinion. Compare the TF300 to any other 10-inch tablet and you’d be hard-pressed to find one with as many features at this price point. And of course, there’s always the dock option to consider – you could get a 16GB TF300 and a matching keyboard dock to extend its battery and utility for just a bit more than the Transformer Prime (or iPad 3, or Galaxy Tab 10.1, etc.) alone. If you want a good tablet at a great price, this is it.
