Last night we caught wind of an update for the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime that, to ASUS' thinking at least, was going to be "awesome". Today the Italian arm of ASUS spilled the beans on the new features, and while "awesome" is a relative term, there are at least a few new features that Transformer Prime owners will be happy to receive. Chief among the additions in the 9.4.2.21 update is support for Ethernet networking, acheived via a USB converter. Ice Cream Sandwich's Face Unlock feature is now fully supported on the Prime's forward-facing camera.

ASUS teases Transformer Prime update with new features
Most owners would say that the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime is a pretty complete machine, especially after its Ice Cream Sandwich software upgrade. Aside form a few niggling hardware problems, it's pretty much all anyone could want from an Android tablet - blazing Tegra 3 processor, all-aluminum construction, bright HD screen. Apparently that's not enough for ASUS: they've posted on their official Facebook account that some "Awesome new features" will be added in the next software update.

Asus is on top of the Android tablet heap at the moment thanks to the Eee Pad Transformer Prime, but they've had a hard time keeping it there lately. A number of controversies have sprouted up around the quad-core Android slate. Apparently those quality issues have led UK online gadget seller Clove to suspend sales of the Transformer Prime indefinitely. "Because of complaints of faults with the model we took the decision to thoroughly test stock before fulfilling any orders," said Clove on their official blog. [ed. note: blog appears to be down at the moment]

Asus has worked commendably fast on bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to its flagship tablet, the Eee Pad Transformer Prime. Just two months after the open source code for Android 4.0 was available, an official update is ready for any who want to download it. But apparently not everyone is tasting the ice cream just yet: several XDA members report that their tablets are displaying a serial number error when applying the update, and keeping the software from installing.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer prime is on top of the tablet game at the moment, despite some big setbacks in the bootloader department. And though the company's German arm previously stated that there were no plans to bring a mobile broadband version of the tablet to market, another part of the Asus seems to think differently. Tablet Writings reports that the Asus office in charge of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg stated that a 3G Transformer Prime will be available some time in the future.

Asus US: Transformer Prime getting ICS January 12th, unlocked bootloader later
It's been quite a tumultuous 24 hours for Asus, as user complaints about the high-end Eee Pad Transformer Prime have mounted. The main concern among Android modders is the locked and encrypted bootloader, which keeps users from installing their own ROMs, kernels, recoveries and what have you. Poor GPS performance when not connected to networks is also an issue. Refuting public relations posts that came out of Italy earlier this morning, Asus' United States branch said via Facebook that they'd be providing Android users with a bootloader unlock tool some time in the future.
