Google’s Play Store turns 1 – celebrates with massive sale all week long

Happy Birthday Google Play Store! Get out the candles and cake, the Google Play Store has just turned 1 years old. Well maybe tomorrow it will at least. As a reminder, the Android Market has been around forever but it has been 1 year since they replaced it with what we know and love today as the Play Store. In celebration Google has plenty of deals and gifts for us, and they'll be available and changing all week.

Gartner: By 2016 more than half of all mobile apps will be hybrid

New analysis from Gartner is pointing towards a future where a good portion of the new mobile apps will be hybrid. In fact, according to the report, "more than 50 percent of mobile apps deployed by 2016 will be hybrid." Some of this deals with the enterprise side of the house and bring-your-own-device programs where it is becoming common for the IT department to have to support multiple mobile operating platforms.

Star Trek: Into Darkness movie companion app hands-on

J.J. Abrams may be moving onto a different space franchise in 2015, but for now, all eyes are on his upcoming film Star Trek: Into Darkness. The movie doesn't hit theaters until May 17, but today Paramount Pictures has released the movie companion app. The Star Trek: Into Darkness app exists to get users excited for the movie, having them scan real-world images and trailers to unlock bonuses and earn points.

Blackberry 10 gets help from Android with 28,000 repackaged apps

This isn't the first time we've talked about Android apps running on a Blackberry, but the all-new Blackberry 10 that was announced and shown off this week is getting more than a little help from the green robot. The Playbook enjoyed Android app support thanks to sideloading in OS 2.0, but today we're hearing nearly 30,000 apps have already been "repackaged" to run on Blackberry.

Flurry claims 50 million Android and iOS device activations during Christmas week

Christmas Day and the week immediately following it are obviously always going to be big for new device activations, but today we're finding out that the final week in December might just have been the biggest on record for iOS and Android. That's according to analytics firm Flurry, which said today that iOS and Android device activations for Christmas week topped a whopping 50 million. Looks like a bunch of people picked up a shiny new tablet of smartphone in the final week of 2012.
