Smartphone app downloads predicted to reach 56 billion in 2013
How many apps do you have installed on your smartphone or tablet? If we had to guess, that number would be fairly large. I have just over 70 installed on my Galaxy S III, however I would probably say that number is on the lower end as compared to some. Needless to say, regardless of how many apps you have personally, one thing is clear -- apps are popular. And in fact, with more and more users moving to smartphones, the amount of downloaded apps is only going to increase.

Apple and Amazon “app store” trademark talks scheduled for March 21
Back in early January we saw an update for the case that had Apple going after Amazon for the use of the term app store. At that time US District Judge Phyllis Hamilton ruled that there was no false advertising on the part of Amazon. Simply put, the judge dismissed the false advertising claim, however it left open the trademark claim.

Just 25 app developers took in 50% of revenue in November
As much as we hate to say it, we've got some bad news for aspiring app developers: there may be 1.4 million apps between the App Store and the Google Play Store, but according to independent analyst firm Canalys, only a select few developers are truly making bank. According to a Canalys study, which took place over the first 20 days in November, just 25 developers pulled in 50% of app revenue between the App Store and the Google Play Store.

Amazon Appstore update brings new UI and fixes battery drain bug
Earlier this week we reported that Amazon's AppStore was now available in Japan, but before being pushed to other regions they also issued a quick software update fixing a few bugs and improving the user interface. This week Amazon updated their 3rd party Android Appstore to terminate a few bugs, as well as solve the Android 4.2 multi-user login problem.

Verizon App shop closing its doors in January
Today the folks from Verizon have confirmed some sad sad news. That sad news being that their extremely unpopular and widely forgotten VCast Verizon App store will be shutting down and closing its doors early next year in January. Verizon original set out to offer an app storefront but it never took off, and is now throwing in the towel.

Lenovo prepares business Android app store

While Lenovo has been making strides in the consumer market for the last few years, its heart and soul is in enterprise, where a ThinkPad laptop is the computing equivalent of sensible khakis and a power tie. Their tablets (even the ThinkPad Tablet) haven't caught on as of yet, but the company is hoping to change that with the Lenovo Enterprise App Shop, an app store for enterprise customers. (Natch.) As opposed to the Google Play Store and its alternatives, the Enterprise App Shop can be launched on a company-by-company basis, with volume licensing discounts and on-site management tools.

PSA: The Android Market isn’t missing, just look for “Play Store” instead
I've been getting tons of comments, tips, and emails over the past 24 hours from various users and readers saying things like "My Android Market has gone missing and I can't download apps." Or the Android Market is no longer on my phone, what the crap Motorola. This is a public service announcement for all those that missed the news (newbies) that Google has actually replaced the Android Market with what they are calling Google Play. You still have the Android Market and all the hundreds of thousands of apps, just under a new name.

Japanese carrier pushes ads to Android notification bar
Raise your hand if you like ads. Anyone? Advertising is an unfortunately necessary part of modern life (and you can take that statement to the bank, since almost the entire livelihood of this humble blogger depends upon it) but sometimes the intrusive nature of new advertising methods sticks in the craw of consumers. Such is the case with Japanese wireless provider KDDI's latest attempt at subtle marketing: they've begun pushing paid ads to users' Android phones via the notification system. Advertising for apps in an alternative market started showing up on phones today, and Asiajin spotted users venting their frustrations on Twitter.

CyanogenMod App Store already in development
Just yesterday we reported on CyanogenMod and ClockworkMod Recovery developer Koushik “Koush” Dutta talking up the possibility of a specially-built app store for CyanogenMod, which would happily welcome all the apps that for one reason or another have gotten the boot from the Android Market. Koush showed off just that on his Google+ page, where he posed the original question: you can see an extremely early screenshot of the submission page for the "CyanogenMod App Store" below. The screenshot is hosted on the web site for ClockworkMod Recovery and ClockworkMod Tether, both of which Koush maintains himself.
