According to Andy Rubin, Android smartphones are now being activated 700,000 times in a single day. In the big scheme of things, that shows amazing growth. The OS is quite popular, but growing from 550,000 daily activations in July to 700K is incredible! It was estimated that we may be at 1 million activations a day by October 20th, but it undoubtedly digressed from the projected path.

So currently, that makes 4.9 million phones activated each week. Overall, Google states that over 200 million Android devices have been activated – so if the trend continues we could see Android surpass the 250 million iOS devices. This not only shows Android is dominating the smartphone market, but that it is continuously becoming more popular. Eventually we will see it peak out, but it’s hard to tell when.

Hopefully, Android owners are statisfied with their devices. If not, this could lead to a very adverse effect in projected market growth. It may take a while for them to bounce back – but with how fast the software is innovatively growing, the end user experience will undoubtedly lead to more repeat Android customers. But if Apple keeps jabbing patent related law suits at Android device manufacturers, we may never see Android surpass them.

We have been hearing rumors for a while now that Google was hard at work on its own MP3 music store. Google does have its music streaming cloud service that lets the user upload tunes they already have to the cloud. We also know that Google had worked to get a music store open in the past, but that ultimately failed to happen.

Google is reportedly now close to opening is own music store again. Android chief Andy Rubin has said at the AsiaD conference, “I think we are close.” Rubin also noted that the music store would be more than just a place selling 99 cent music tracks. He noted it “would have Google in it.” He didn’t elaborate on exactly what that means.

As AllThingsD points out, so far reports have claimed that only EMI is close to a deal with Google. Google will need all the major music publishers on board to really make a go of a music store. If Rubin says close he is either optimistic or other labels have signed on that we don’t know about. Rubin was also surprisingly candid about why the negotiations broke down last spring with record labels. According to Rubin, the problem is that the media industry saw Google as a search company and couldn’t figure out what Google was up to.

Fans of Android are likely familiar with the name Andy Rubin. Rubin has been around the tech world in a big way and is famous as the founder of Danger and then as the dude that is responsible for Android. It took a long time for this to surface, but apparently, back in 2008 Rubin shared the wealth when he got his first big bonus check from Google.

The 2008 bonus was given to Rubin when Android shipped and Rubin turned around and shared the loot with the workers that helped him bring Android to market. At the time, there were 100 or so workers on the team. According to the WSJ, each of the workers received between $10,000 and $50,000 directly out of Rubin’s own pocket.

That is a dude that takes care of his employees. Rubin is also known to throw two parties a year for his workers at his home in Mountain View. The best bonus I ever got from an employer was a free turkey. I should have worked for Rubin.

While Google’s purchase of the Motorola group may mean many things for Google, especially along the lines of patents, Motorola will, if Andy Rubin and Motorola’s Sanjay Jha are to be trusted, still act as a separate company. In addition, Rubin has doubly assured the Android public that the next Nexus device coming from Google will not necessarily be a Motorola device, and that Motorola “will be part of that bidding process” but will not necessarily be a certain lock-in.

As it’s clear that every real hardcore Android fan’s true love of Android is shown in their wanting to see the next Nexus device, Andy Rubin released a set of words noting how it should be clear to everyone that Google’s acquisition of Motorola does not mean Motorola will be given any special favors:

“We have this lead device strategy, that strategy has worked quite well to help focus the team. What we do is select, around Christmas time each year, a manufacturer that we work very closely with to release a device in that timeframe, and that includes also some essential companies and all the components that go into the device. And essentially all the teams huddle together in one building, they jointly work and these development efforts go on for 9-12 months, and ultimately at the holiday season or right before it the devices pop out that are based on this effort.”

- Andy Rubin

Publicly, as in sitting right alongside the official release of the acquisition of Motorola by Google, manufacturers Samsung, Sony Ericsson, HTC, and LG, have appeared rather positive about the deal:

“We welcome today’s news, which demonstrates Google’s deep commitment to defending Android, its partners, and the ecosystem.”
– J.K. Shin President, Samsung, Mobile Communications Division

“I welcome Google‘s commitment to defending Android and its partners.”
– Bert Nordberg President & CEO, Sony Ericsson

“We welcome the news of today‘s acquisition, which demonstrates that Google is deeply committed to defending Android, its partners, and the entire ecosystem.”
– Peter Chou CEO, HTC Corp.

“We welcome Google‘s commitment to defending Android and its partners.”
– Jong-Seok Park, Ph.D, President & CEO, LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company

What we’re looking at here instead will be Google acquiring a strong and significant patent portfolio, one that Motorola has very recently suggested that it was (and is) in a strong position to be on the patent offensive in the very near future. We can guess here that Google will now be able to hopefully defend itself against the current patent war going on in the streets.

If you are a big fan of Android operating system for your smartphone or tablet, you probably know who Andy Rubin is. Rubin was the geek who developed Android and then sold the OS to Google back in 2005. Rubin was also involved in the company Danger. Rubin has posted up a tweet with some interesting stats on how many Android devices are activated each day and the information is very interesting.

According to Rubin there are over 500,000 Android devices activated each day. Just as impressive is the fact that the number of activations are growing at 4.4% week over week. Looking back to December of 2010 when Rubin tweeted the same information there were 300,000 Android phones being activated each day. That is a huge number of Android devices.

Rubin was promoted from vice President of Engineering at Google to Senior Vice President back in early April. It’s nice to get data on how many Android devices are being activated. I wish other smartphone markers were as open about how many devices are being sold and activated.

You know how all the bigtime Android iterations are named after desserts? Do you also see how the titles of these deserts have been released in alphabetical order? These Android titles go like so: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, and Honeycomb. This last version is the first tablet-specific version of Android and should, based on what we know at the moment, be considered as being developed aside from the main Android bloodline. That said, the next version’s name has been “leaked” by a Google developer by the name of Romain Guy: Ice Cream Sandwich.

See, I TOLD YOU man, I TOLD YOU. Actually Andy Rubin told you (sort of) back in January of this year in a conversation with Jason Kincaid. Have a look at that old post and continue on to the following: a code issue inside the subject of Gradients in Honeycomb. In this short and sweet conversation, official Android worker Romain Guy notes the following: “A bug fix will be provided in Ice Cream Sandwich.”

This changes everything! Actually it doesn’t really change anything, but it’s fun to know that the version of Android that will make some big strides to combine both versions of Android now has a sandwichy name. As Eric Schmidt said back at Mobile World Congress 2011: “We have OS called gingerbread for phones, we have an OS being previewed now for tablets called Honeycomb. The two of them… you can imagine the follow up will start with an I, be named after dessert, and will combine these two.”

Tasty enough? Totally tasty. Then of course there’s the most empirical evidence of all: if there were to be a giant Froyo sculpture out in front of the Googleplex and there were to be a giant dish of Ice Cream, there would be some confusion. If the Ice Cream is a big sandwich instead, all of that confusion just melts away like the tasty, tasty treat it is. ALSO, the hero image in this post comes from Google circa 2006. Still yummy.

A few of our main Google super-computers are switching places as of late, one of them you may well know about – Larry Page, co-founder of Google switching up with Eric Schmidt, leaving Schmidt to do all the dirty work (traveling about the earth talking about the awesomeness of Google, for example.) Meanwhile Page has been doing some more inter-company promoting. One of these promotions, the one we’ll be keeping the closest eye on, is Andy Rubin, who until this time was of course known as the father of Android and Vice President of Engineering at Google, is now one of six Senior Vice Presidents.

This move makes it clear that Google is dedicated to what’s very clearly one of its most successful ventures in their short history, Android, and that Rubin’s role in making Google a better place for the world to interact is secured. Rubin’s new role means that he’ll be reporting directly to Page in what’s being called an effort to streamline Google’s executive structure as well as an effort to provide “better company focus” in the near future.

The new team is thusly organized:
• Andy Rubin, SVP of mobile
• Vic Gundotra, SVP of social
• Sundar Pichai, SVP of Chrome
• Salar Kamangar, SVP of YouTube and video
• Alan Eustace, SVP of search
• Susan Wojcicki, SVP of ads

We’ve got an entire portal dedicated to our main homie Andy Rubin, that which you can take a peek at over [over here]. The most explosive thing this fellow has done as of late was to respond to rumors that Google was tightening its grip on open-sourcedness with words on how he and they are dedicated to the open source project forever! Rubin’s Rabblers! That’s what his fans are called. They’ll be happy with this newest news.

Today on Android’s Developers news feed, Andy Rubin has responded to all the wild closed-source talk that’s been circulating, essentailly taking what yours truly wrote up in Android Remains Open, Android Remains Powerful and rehashing it. That’s not to say that Andy read what I wrote over there and decided he ought to write one too, but you never know!

Rubin, also known as the VP or Engineering, aka known as the Great OG Father of Android. What he begins by saying is that he’d like to set the record straight and that although Android has grown a lot since its 2008 inception, it remains comitted to fostering the development of a completely open platform. He goes on to say that Android, of course, isn’t a “one size fits all” type of production, and that device makers are free to do anything they like to customize using Android’s wide range of features.

However, as we noted in Android Community 101: Android Lisencing, Rubin notes that in order for a device to have “Android-compatible” printed on or anywhere around it or any Google applications packaged with it (Android Market, for example,) they’ll need to conform to some “basic compatibility requirements.” These requirements are all listed at source.android.com, and anyone can peek at them if they wish.

That said, Rubin notes that since Android 1.0 there’s been an “anti-fragmentation” program in place, all of the founding members of the Open Handset Alliance [which you can discuss here] “agreed not to fragment” back in 2007, and they stick to their words today. Rubin notes specifically:

Our approach remains unchanged: there are no lock-downs or restrictions against customizing UIs.

He goes on to assure everyone:

There are not, and never have been, any efforts to standardize the platform on any single chipset architecture.

He finalizes his text with an assurance that the Android team of developers in-house are hard at work aiming to “bring all the new Honeycomb features to phones.” As soon as they’re finished, he says, they’ll publish the code. Whether this means the Honeycomb code or the Ice Cream code or what, he does not specify.

And the most important bit of his entire speech here is the title of the text: “I think I’m having a Gene Amdahl moment http://goo.gl/7v4kf” – this link leading to a Wikipedia entry entitiled “Fear, uncertainty and doubt.” This is a term also known as FUD, and is used to describe a method of marketing mayhem as described by its originator former IBM emplployee Gene Amdahl as he formed his own company, Amdahl Corp.: “FUD is the fear, uncertainty, and doubt that IBM sales people instill in the minds of potential customers who might be considering Amdahl products.” Scary!

What Rubin believes, and we’re inclined to agree, is that the information disassembled by this post: Android Remains Open, Android Remains Powerful, was assembled in the first place by brands hoping to make people distrust Android enough to not purchase or invest in them. Evil!

Android lead Andy Rubin has challenged rumors that Google is locking down the OS, taking to the official Android Developers blog to deny that there has been “a change in strategy” in how it deals with OEMs, modifications, or hardware. “Our approach remains unchanged: there are no lock-downs or restrictions against customizing UIs” Rubin insists. “There are not, and never have been, any efforts to standardize the platform on any single chipset architecture.”

Talk of a more stringent approach to Android modification broke last week, with insiders claiming Google had begun to prioritize vendors who would agree not to modify the OS or its UI. The so-called “anti-fragmentation clauses,” Rubin says, have however been in place since Android 1.0, and the only demands Google makes is that manufacturers hold to certain core specifications if they want to use Google’s own apps.

As for Honeycomb and the release of the Android 3.0 source code, Rubin says that “the Android team is still hard at work to bring all the new Honeycomb features to phones” and that “as soon as this work is completed, we’ll publish the code.”

To our surprise, we saw Andy Rubin pull out a Motorola Android 3.0 based tablet at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference on Monday. However, the video that was released showed the device, but it’s not the high-res goodness we would appreciate, that has all changed with photographer Asa Mathat posting some high-resolution photos of the device from the conference.

The images reveal some interesting information about the device that we will for sure be seeing at CES this year. The device appears to have both a front and back-facing camera, with the back camera sporting a dual-LED flash, volume rocker hard keys and it’s incredibly thin.

This is certainly looking to be the true iPad rival, and we couldn’t be more excited about the Motorola “Everest” coming to market early next year.

Honeycomb, Rubin confirmed, is due in 2011 with native tablet support, though he didn’t say exactly when it could be expected. Screen size for the Motorola slate is also unconfirmed; the company has been tipped to be making both 7- and 10-inch models.

Andy Rubin, the chief of Android, sat down with PC Mag today for a Q&A session. Among topics of discussion, Androids rivals were mentioned. Mostly focused on Windows Phone 7, where he goes on to state that “the world doesn’t need another platform.”

Based on the screen shots he has seen he thinks that the platform is “interesting” but beyond that, he does not see the need when Android is already out there.

“Android is free and open; I think the only reason you create another platform is for political reasons”

He also goes on to note that part of the strength in the Android platform as a whole is it’s direct incorporation with Google’s services. Google has been in this business “since day zero” that is something that Microsoft just can not compare with as they re-enter the smartphone OS market.

Matias Duarte, Palm’s senior director of human interface and user experience, has decided to leave the company. Most of you may know HP recently acquired Palm a few weeks ago. There have been rumors that he could land at Google and help out with the development of Android. Those rumors were recently confirmed by Engadget.

“Mr. Duarte is the new User Experience Director for Android”, this is statement directly from Mountain View which is Google’s headquarters. Matias previously worked with Andy Rubin in the past on Sidekick projects in the past. This is a reunion of sorts. The addition of Duarte could open up Android to a whole new world of possibilities.

In all respect WebOS is a pretty decent operating system. It has a few strong points that Android could really benefit from. WebOS is possibly the best mobile OS in handling multi-tasking. A few of these features are sure to make an appearance on Android. With the help of Matias, Gingerbread could very well receive a few piece from Palm’s flagship OS.

This was a short but very interesting interview with Andy Rubin, vice president for engineering at Google, shots was dished out and a few things were kind of confirmed. Android is a well known open mobile OS and the most versatile OS of any kind. This openness is the key to Androids success, many manufacturers have adopted the platform and it is really taking off.

When asked about fragmentation of the Android platform Andy Rubin said,” These systems naturally evolve, causing newer applications to not be compatible with older devices. But compatibility for us means more than it does for other people. We have to run on a screen the size of a phone and a 42-inch plasma display.” Simply put, fragmentation is a product of newer technologies. As discussed in an earlier post, Froyo will alleviate most of the fragmentation in Android and with it comes Flash integration.

Android currently runs on 9 percent of smart phones in the United States. Mr. Rubin sees the open nature of the platform the driving force behind these growing numbers. Also, he fully expects Android to one day over take Apple and Rim. Since Android is viewed as being the biggest threat to Apple, there naturally were a few questions regarding Apple. Mr. Rubin compared them to North Korea, a country that is ruled by a dictator. He also pointed out that Google uses the same SDK to produce apps as the rest of the developers in the Android community. If there is a secret API in Android, they will release it for the rest of the developers to use unlike some companies. Android and Google is all about choice and at the end of the day, choice is what will propel Android to the top spot.

The most basic implementation is obligation-free, with manufacturers at liberty to install Android on as many devices as they please. However they may not distribute GMail, Google Calendar or any of the other so-called “popular Google applications”. Next comes an implementation with strings attached, in which manufacturers sign a distribution agreement with Google and are thus permitted to include their apps. Finally comes what the search giant refers to as The Google Experience, with Google branding on the handset, full installs of the Google apps and unrestricted access to the Android Market.

Of the handsets Rubin is aware of hitting the market by the end of this year, 12-14 fall into the second category and 5-6 into the third. Rubin expects US carriers to take longer to introduce Android devices, as they attempt to customize the platform; he declined to confirm which manufacturers Google know to be creating Android handsets.

This week Pixelpipe was introduced into the world providing all G1 owners the ability to better get photos off of you handset and onto the Internet. Publish photos to your favorite social networking site such as MySpace or Facebook. Brad Fitzpatric has managed to give the G1 a nice little feature that allows users to use their handset as a garage door opener.

Fantastic news for all of us Android fans, Andy Rubin demoed Flash on a G1 handset at Adobe’s MAX event. This is definitely good to see as the iPhone still has yet to make it that far. Another company in China is making yet another claim that they will have an Android-powered handset. At first we didn’t know if Sciphone’s “Dream G2” was a joke or if they were really serious. Apparently they will have an odd-looking touchscreen handset by the end of November, they better get cracking!

There have been more reports that the G1 is capable of multi-touch. Apparently the screen itself works just fine with multi-touch. A user by the name of RyeBrye has managed to discover the Synaptics touchscreen has some code that has intentionally been left out. Once he recompiled the kernel with the code put back in he was able to track two separate finger presses at one time. If G1 owners are already getting sick of the available games in the Android Market then Phoload is here to save the day. Pholad is now adding support for Google’s Android platform, bringing even more free games to the table.

Earlier this week we reported a rumor that NTT DoCoMo along with South Korea’s KT Freetel were working together on an Android-powered handset for release in China. Almost immediately KT Fretel came fourth denying any work with NTT DoCoMo on an Android. Soon after those reports came in NTT DoCoMo came clean as well stating that they are indeed working on an Android-powered handset, just not with KT Fretel.

Reports also came in stating that the recent shipments of T-Mobile G1 handsets are coming in with the addition of a 3.5mm headphone jack with microphone. No more purchasing adapters in order to use your favorite headphones to listen to music. We also received work that the beta version of Android for Openmoko’s FreeRunner will be available the first week of December. Openmoko has wasted no time in delivering this to their customers.

TouchDown is bringing yet more Exchange support to Android users. TouchDown keeps Google’s information separate from your Exchange info while only providing users with a great way to fetch their information, but also allows users to check for new email and events periodically. Can it be, another country getting the G1? Yes, the Philippines are going to be the next to get the G1, because the demand seems high enough. It’s about time that the US sees the white G1. Many people have speculated as to why we have not yet been able to purchase the white G1, but users in the UK have. Whatever the case it does not matter, those who have waited do not have to wait any longer.

This morning at Adobe’s MAX event, Andy Rubin made an appearance and had a chance to show a brief demo. Do we even have to say what it was he was doing there? Here is a hint, he was doing a demo with the beloved T-Mobile G1.

Andy Ruben has officially shown that Flash can run on Android. It is one thing to talk about it coming to a device, hint hint Apple, but when a device is released and shortly after is shown running Flash, it speaks volumes. Not only is it possible, but Android will be running Flash soon enough.

Ruben did not say when we will see it happen or in which way it will be delivered, but actually showing the demo live must mean we will be getting it fairly soon. What an amazing gift it would be from Google to wake up Christmas morning with Flash running on our G1. Adobe has already said that the iPhone will have flash as soon as they allow it. This is just one more way that Android and the G1 are outdoing Apple and the iPhone.

More and more information about future Android-powered handsets surfaced this week. Samsung and LG apparently won’t be releasing a handset until at least Q3 2009, giving T-Mobile more than amazing sales opportunities. T-Mobile expects to sell half a million handsets in 2008 alone.

Motorola has confirmed rumors that they are expanding their Android team by as many as 300 members. In other rumors, Nokia and Verizon were reportedly spotted at a recent Android developer conference put on by Google. We also heard that China Mobile may be working on a TD-SCDMA 3G Android Phone. Android Community also managed to get an exclusive hands on with the G1 and award winning Android application ShopSavvy, formerly known as GoCart. The app you to scan a barcode at the store, and immediately get local store prices as well as online prices for that particular item.

Android Community has also undergone several new changes and upgrades. Our new layout is now much better organized and hopefully easier to navigate. We are happy to announce the addition of our Knowledge Base (KB), which includes General Guides and Tips & Tricks. We have also added a user blog where you can blog about anything you wish: happy about getting your G1, just blog about it! Now users can upload personal pictures to our Member Photo Album or submit Android related photos to your flikr page. Special thanks to Ewdi for putting in the time and effort to make this site what it is.

Many of us are very excited to hear that the G1 will be ready for 16 Gig microSD cards right out of the box. More astonishing news was heard with the explanation of Applications Without Boarders. The simple concept of applications being able to share data and work off of each other. Several different applications may now use the same database library created by another. Screen shots of BestBuy’s inventory hint that they will be receiving the G1 in November. While no one can confirm this as of yet, it looks highly possible with the time frame in which BestBuy received the iPhone 3G.

Andy Ruben spoke about the differences between Android Market and Apple’s App Store, and has revealed there will be no bandwith limitations for Android applications, T-Mobile has asked that developers with free apps, that take more than 15 Megabytes a month for a single user, pay a $2 monthly fee. With the recent demand of the G1 T-Mobile has tripled the production of G1 handsets available for pre-order before October 22nd and managed to sell through them all already. Android software engine Andy Stadler spoke about how Android is fully embedded with search. T-Mobile has officially released the G1 emulator with 360 view. This emulator allows you to go thought the phone almost as if you had it in front of you.
