Google’s Android reaches 1 billion device activation milestone

Today Google's Senior Vice President and current head of Android Sundar Pichai just shocked the Android world by posting a few beautifully timed posts on his social network pages. For one he has confirmed the next version of Android will be 4.4 (not 5.0) and will be called KitKat. Say goodbye to Key Lime Pie. Not only that, but the Android train cannot be stopped, and we've reached another milestone.

Sundar Pichai: 70 million Android tablet activations

Today we are happy to be enjoying breakfast with Sundar Pichai, the man in charge of Android and Chrome over at team Google, and he's just started sharing some interesting numbers. While we're expecting the new Nexus 7, Android 4.3 and much more, he's talking numbers. Confirming there is now over 70 million tablets running Android.

Larry Page confirms 1.5 million Android devices are activated daily

In case you missed the usual boring earnings call by good old Google today, they've been making plenty of cash. While we'll talk more on that later, we wanted to mention some Android numbers because as usual Larry was on the earnings call shouting them out. I'm just excited to know that soon enough Android will reach that magical 1 billion point. That's impressive!

Flurry claims 50 million Android and iOS device activations during Christmas week

Christmas Day and the week immediately following it are obviously always going to be big for new device activations, but today we're finding out that the final week in December might just have been the biggest on record for iOS and Android. That's according to analytics firm Flurry, which said today that iOS and Android device activations for Christmas week topped a whopping 50 million. Looks like a bunch of people picked up a shiny new tablet of smartphone in the final week of 2012.

Verizon sees more Android activations than all other carriers

If there's one thing about Verizon, they love touting their huge 4G LTE network, as well as the Android phones that go with it. It isn't too surprising then that between June and August of this year, Android devices accounted for around half of all device activations on Verizon. That's a lot of Android phones.

China passes United States for most Android activations

Holy cow. According to a new report from analytics firm Flurry, the number of newly activated Android users in China has surpassed that of the United States to become the world's fastest-growing body of smartphone users. The stat holds true for iOS as well, making China the #1 country for total number of smartphone users on the planet. That's hardly surprising - they've got the largest number of people after all, nearing 1.5 billion as of 2010 - but the rapid adoption rate in the country just a few years after the emergence of the current mobile market is astonishing.

Android growth continues: 450,000 apps, 850,000 activations daily

As previously indicated, Google's Android booth at Mobile World Congress is pretty amazing. But it's not all slides and pins: the company took the opportunity to interrupt full-grown tech journalists embracing their inner child for long enough to drop the latest numbers detailing Android's meteoric rise. First up, Android has now passed an average of 850,000 new phone and tablet activations every day - and that's just the number that Google keeps track of through its own apps and servers. It's a growth of over two hundred and fifty percent since MWC 2011 a year ago. Anyone want to start taking bets on how soon it will reach a million?
