Nova Launcher brings much-needed options to the ICS home screen

No doubt about it, the fancy new launcher is one of the highlights of Ice Cream Sandwich's revised user interface. The default launcher has plenty of new animations, a revised app drawer that combines with a widget placement engine, and automatic folders that make grouping your apps easier than ever. But it's still extremely light on customization, just like all the stock launchers beforehand. Enter Nova Launcher, a quickly-created customization of the launcher found in Ice Cream Sandwich's open source code.

There's a lot of aftermarket Android launchers out there, but very few can claim to have the kind of following that ADWLauncher EX enjoys. A rock-solid foundation, tons of customization options and a robust theme engine makes it one of the most popular launchers on the Market. Of course, with Ice Cream Sandwich's enhanced launcher a lot of the current offerings are looking long in the tooth. If there's one thing that device manufacturers across the board are NOT known for, it's optional user interfaces. Instead it's nearly always a face over the top of Android that, if you're not too keen on hacking your device, you're sort of stuck with. Of course manufacturers don't want you to see it that way, promoting their devices alongside their user interfaces as added value - take TouchWiz for example on Samsung devices (video included below aside Pure Breeze video). TouchWiz is what Samsung places on the vast majority of their Android devices, namely their Galaxy S II line coming to the USA this month and the Infuse 4G which we're using for this hands-on look at what Samsung has silently released as a brand new Launcher - Pure Breeze!

ADW EX is probably one of the most popular home replacement apps for Android and I'm sure plenty of people are happy to hear this news. Over at XDA we are always finding good things. Today I've found a Wallpaper and Launcher Dock Gallery full of good wallpapers. If your like us and enjoy changing your wallpaper, or the look of your dock often then this will definitely be for you. So you're the sort of person that likes a custom experience on your Android phone, but you don't necessarily like to hack, yes? You're in luck, as there's one fantastic app that does such a thing and it requires absolutely no rooting, ROM using, or tinkering in the least bit (unless you consider searching through all the new options you'll have to be tinkering.) This home screen replacement app is called ADW Launcher EX, and it's beem updated this weekend to version 1.2.2, a version that, in addition to all the fantastic features it's had in the past, now has a large selection of 8 nice looking custom docks, plus a few more minor (but neato) changes as well.
