Deal Alert: refurbished Acer Iconia Tab A500 on eBay for $239

Acer releases app to manually update A500 tablets to ICS

Now here's what we like to see: a manufacturer that's proactive in getting their customers upgraded to the latest software. Acer might have been somewhat behind the curve when it came to granting Android 4.0 to their Iconia Tab A500 model, but now that it's out, they want to make sure those who want it right away can get it as quickly as possible. Their new ICONIA TAB update Enhancement app will help users to do just that.

Acer Iconia Tab A500 ICS update rolling out today

Just like the smaller sibling in the A100 it appears that Acer has flipped the switch and is rolling out the update to Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich for their Tegra 2 powered Iconia Tab A500 too. The update was originally stated to start on Friday, April 27th but it apparently is available now and rolling out to users in the US and Canada.

Canadians get the update on May 3rd (all the better to watch our Galaxy S III liveblog!) and those in Latin America will get updates for the A100 on April 25th and for the A500 on April 27th.

Good news today comes in the form of the official Android 4.0 ICS builds for both tablets being leaked over on XDA.

Over on the Acer New Zealand Facebook page they have announced the A500 tablet should see an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in April. With other Acer tablets already starting to get the latest from Google I'm sure many A500 owners aren't too happy with the news.

Acer cuts back for 2012, focuses on high-end phones and tablets

Acer hasn't done well in the Android world this year. Their hardware is solid enough, and their no-nonsense approach to software is refreshing, but they've been beaten pretty soundly by the likes of Samsung, HTC and Asus at just about every junction. They're not shy about admitting it, either: To clarify the company's ongoing position, founder Stan Shih told DigiTimes that it wouldn't be going anywhere in 2012. He likened the rocky road it's faced in the mobile spectrum so far to its early years in the laptop market, where it currently holds a commanding position.
