Citing a third party speed comparison in two major metropolitan areas, T-Mobile has published results that predictably puts them on top with their 4G network, while skewering AT&T and Verizon’s iPhones as being as slow as a rabbit beating the turtle. In addition to claiming a speed advantage over the iPhone thanks to it’s Samsung Galaxy S 4G, T-Mobile also points out that their 4G data plans start at just $10 a month, while AT&T and Verizon start at $15 and $30 respectively. Now, to be fair, the Galaxy S does run on T-Mobile’s 4G network, while both AT&T and Verizon have the iPhone 4 on a 3G network. But while T-mobile wants to compare the iPhone to the Galaxy S as a tortoise to a hare, is it really more comparing apples to oranges?

It’s likely that T-Mobile is attempting to preemptively strike since both networks are launching 4G capability in a major way with plenty of Android handsets that equal or surpass the Galaxy S in performance. T-Mobile has a point on starting data plan costs, sure. But while the speed benefits of 3G over 4G are obvious, the T-mobile comparison is rather like comparing a motorcycle to a bicycle, while ignoring the Harley sitting in the bicycle’s driveway. And, in the end, we all know how that story of the tortoise and the hare ends up, don’t we?

  1. I agree, an iphone is bicycle or a tricycle.

Having tested Att s 4g network, I agree with T mobile, regardless of the phone used (Atrix included) 4g on Att is still a bicycle and no Harley is available.

Now Verizon, LTE network for now on smartphone s its still not here. We shall see if the thunderbolt can keep four hours of batery life. So a Harley with a pint of gas that will get you to the store and not back is not useful either. So for now Tmobile enjoys the benefit of the doubt.

  2. Can this article be a bit more biased? The fact is at my workplace we have 3 IT people and it happens that one has an iphone 4 on att, the other iphone 4 on verizon, and i have the G2 with t-mobile, and as of now i have the best download speed. When AT&t and verizon get their networks up to speed i can pretty much guarantee both my co-workers will be buying new phones to take advantage of it.
