T-Mobile G1 powered by Google Android now available

T-Mobile have officially launched the G1 powered by Google Android in the US.  The wait is over, and those of you who wanted to get some hands-on experience with the G1 can now head into stores and have a play yourself.  Available both in-store and online, the G1 starts from $179.99 with a new, two-year contract.

Availability, however, is listed as “Extremely limited supply”, so if you definitely want one from this batch of initial retail versions then you probably should be typing in your credit card number right now.  T-Mobile were overwhelmed with pre-orders for the device when they offered it up to existing customers, and HTC had to ramp up its production in order to satisfy demand.

We’re not sure how many handsets are in stock in T-Mobile retail stores.  However what the press release does make clear is that only areas served by T-Mobile’s 3G network will have the G1 ready to take away; stores in areas outside of that coverage will have demo units but require that the smartphone is ordered in specially.

T-Mobile Launches the Highly Anticipated T-Mobile G1

Following Strong Pre-Sales Demand, the T-Mobile G1 with Google Goes on Sale Today Online and at Select Retail Stores Nationwide

BELLEVUE, Wash. —Oct. 22, 2008—T-Mobile USA, Inc. today announced the national availability of the highly anticipated T-Mobile G1 with Google, the first Android™-powered mobile phone. The T-Mobile G1 combines full touch-screen functionality and a QWERTY keyboard with a rich mobile Web experience, dozens of Android Market applications, and popular Google products that millions have enjoyed on the desktop, including Google Maps Street View™, Gmail™, YouTube™ and others.

Beginning today, consumers can purchase the phone in select retail stores across the country and online at http://www.T-MobileG1.com.

“During the past month, we’ve seen unbridled excitement for the T-Mobile G1 and the positive impact it will have on the mobile lives of our customers,” said Denny Marie Post, chief marketing officer, T-Mobile USA. “In fact, among those T-Mobile customers who have pre-ordered the phone, roughly half have traded up from a basic handset, illustrating the leap many consumers are taking to a rich, accessible mobile Web experience. Its design, functionality and value make the first-of-its-kind T-Mobile G1 a truly approachable device for the masses.”

Customers can find and download a wide range of innovative applications—from games to social networking and on-the-go shopping—to personalize their phone and enhance their mobile lifestyle. Even better, for a limited time, the dozens of applications available on Android Market are available free-of-charge for T-Mobile G1 users.

“With new, high-value applications constantly being added to Android Market for customers to discover, the T-Mobile G1 is the phone that grows with you,” said Post. “And as the Market continues to grow and evolve, the possibilities are virtually endless.”

Customers can purchase and carry away the T-Mobile G1 at T-Mobile retail stores and select third-party stores in major cities where T-Mobile’s 3G service is currently available. 1. I wonder how many people are sleeping infront of Tmobile Stores across the county... hahaahaha
  2. Hi guys, I'm a developer from Italy, I love Android but, as other technologies, It won't be in Italy until next year, 2Q.
I'll be in the USA next month and I'm wondering whether it's possible to buy the G1 at full price (I read that this should be possible, at 399$).
Can someone confirm me this? And, will the device be unlocked?
    Thank you guys!!!
  3. People were lined up at two of the t-mobile stores around here. Felt bad for them. I've had mine for 3 days now.
  4. yea u can buy it full price but you will have to pay someone else to unlock it. It is 399.99 if you buy it for full price. Just don't buy it in Chicago, lol, our taxes are 10.25% on merchandise. Good Luck!!!

haha me too!!!! I am like why wait just preorder. And you didn't even have to front the money up front. Geez people are silly.
  6. I liked the idea of the G1. Tested it at a T-Mobile store yesterday. I loved the touchscreen and the keyboard. Keyboard buttons were a little flat, hard to tell if it was pressed or not.

The only reasons I wanted the G1 was because it was a "glorified sidekick" with a touch screen. The most important application on a phone has to be AIM because I'm deaf and use that to communicate with friends/family. After seeing the G1 AIM, nothing can beat the sidekick's AIM. Hopefully they'll fix the AIM on the G1 or have a 3rd party develop a better AIM application. There was no idle notifications of screennames on my buddy list and I know for a fact one of them was idle for 5 days. It can be frustrating to IM people and think they're ignoring you when in fact they're idle.

My contract ends in December, hopefully they fix all the bugs/problems with the applications. Also the bar code scanner didn't work. I scanned a car charger at the tmobile store and it didn't show any results! A Tmobile branded car charger!! How ironic.
  7. I just ordered mine over the phone since I am in a non 3G city... they said it would ship Nov 10th. I am a bit taken back by the delay considering the increased production. I'm very jealous of all of you...
  8. Does anyone know how long the apps will be free? I don't get my phone till the 10th and will be really pissed if I have to pay for all my apps!!! I preordered one day too late and am dying here =[ Any help will be appreciated I just don't wanna pay for the apps cause I was one day too late!!
  9. I ordered my G1 last night online, and they just shipped it out today with "2nd Day Air", should be getting it on Friday or Monday..
  10. Got mine this morning 8am, barely even a line. New tmobile store, not many people know about it, i was #7. Waiting in line plus getting everything hooked up with my phone took 40min. STOKED ! Got in and got out.

    LOS ANGELES area.
  11. I need to edit my previous post.... I just got an email saying my phone was being shipped 2 day. The rep over the phone said it would not ship till Nov 10th!! What in the world?? Friday has a MUCH better ring than 19 days from now. STOKED..
  12. How can I unlock it? Are there stores in NY to unlock phones? Will they be able to unlock it?
    Thank you again Chloe!
  13. Its a branded phone. There may eventually be a way to unlock it, but I would not count on it as the SideKick still has yet to have a good unlock.
