Calling the Xperia Z2 a victim of its own success, various Sony online stores have removed the pre-order option from the company’s latest flagship. However, the company assures its fans that there will be no delay to the April launch, though some now speculate only a few units will be available initially.

A few days ago, some noticed that various Sony Mobile regional websites no longer offered the Xperia Z2 for pre-orders. This immediately caused a rumor frenzy, with many hinting that it is an indicator of a coming delay to the retail launch of the device. While Sony does confirm that it is not simply a case of clerical error, its explanations are no less reassuring.

In the UK, Sony explains that the Estore is currently no longer accepting pre-orders because of stock numbers. Sony’s French PR echoed the fact, but also implied that the Xperia Z2 has become so popular, leading to an unexpected shortage. Nonetheless, Sony insists that, at least in the UK, customers will see the Xperia Z2 in the market starting April. Other regions might not be so lucky.

Sony’s response still leaves many questions unanswered. Even presuming that Sony is being truthful that this supposed shortage is due to strong demand for the product, the situation still calls into question the company’s capability to supply this alleged strong demand. And the fact that stocks ran out immediately with just pre-orders alone could mean that there wasn’t much to begin with. Quite strange for a company that should be expecting its flagship device to be a huge hit. Whichever way you spin it, PR-wise, this does not bode well for the Sony Xperia Z2.

  1. Possible stock shortage can be a testimony on how popular the Sony Xperia Z2, pushing demands higher beyond expected levels. Shortages occur as more Service Providers stocking it or ordering it to Sony in larger quantity.

The main cause for the high demand is the specifications offered by Sony Z2.

Sony Xperia Z2 has FM Radio Hardware Built-in, 3GB RAM, Dual Channel Speakers (Stereo), 3200 mAh Battery, Noise Cancelling earphones, Level 8 Waterproofing, 20.7 MPixel Camera, Premium Finish Product.

The position of both speakers are at the front face, making clearer to the owner rather than to others nearby.

These are the specs that make many people suddenly talk about Sony mobile phone.

    • I had been a “Samsung fan boy” for some time now but the tide has turned in Sony’s favour even the most basic of changes from the S3 too the S4 was enough to start turning my head towards another brand, Sony have come you with a phone that is every thing Samsung is not, which to be frank is why I have moved to Sony so sure a lot of others will be the same. Turning off pre orders was a wise thing to do as Sony would still need to have it’s bread and butter suppliers (Contract phones) stocked as the main market is there.
