Earlier this year, Sony launched the Xperia Beta Program to help in squashing the bugs and fixing the errors before a software update is officially released. It’s akin to Samsung’s beta testing program for Galaxy program but this one is for the Xperia line. This is different from the ‘Concept for Android’ program that the company is also running.

The last Xperia Beta Program was released for Android Marshmallow for several Xperia handsets like the Xperia Z2, Xperia Z3, or Z3 compact. We didn’t keep track of the releases but the last build number was 23.5.A.1.238 and the commercial firmware is now ready. That is good news for those Xperia Z2 and Xperia users because that means you can soon enjoy the fluffy goodness of Marshmallow. We just don’t know when exactly because Sony has not given exact availability. We only learned that the software update for the Xperia Z2 and Z3 phone users will be ready “in the coming weeks”.

Those already on beta will be updated to the official Marshmallow version automatically. There won’t be any future beta firmware releases as Sony decided to close the Xperia Beta Program. We’re not sure if this is temporary but looks like it but of course, we’ll still welcome it if and when Sony decides to bring the beta program back.
