Recently the company Purple Communications announced a new service and product called SmartVP. This is the first of its kind true HD videophone option for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing, and it also works quite well with a host of Android apps. SmartVP combined the latest technology with our good friend Android, and added a wide array of smart apps and features to transform how deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals communicate. Read on for more details.

While SmartVP and the service might not cater to our usual readers, it shows just one of the many different aspects and applications that Android can and is being used. Running their custom service on top of Android is enabling the deaf and hard-of-hearing to have the best, easiest, and HD videophone calling experience available.

Thanks to SmartVP running on Android this is more than just a videophone calling solution where users can use sign language to communicate. It also runs with Android apps such as YouTube, Yellow Pages, Weather, and a full video archive for the Deaf with captions and all. It’s more than just a phone. It’s a TV set-top that delivers plenty of content to the deaf. See more from their newly released video below.

Another neat feature is the ability to use the integrated Android apps at any time, even while on a call. Check the local weather, lookup a new movie with Captionfish support and more all with the wireless remote. Then SmartVP offers two extremely bright 360 degrees flasher lights so you’ll never miss an incoming call or notification again.
