Shazam adds 2 million songs to database

One application we were excited to see on Android is Shazam. After using it so frequently on the iPhone it makes the transition that much easier. Now the only problem we have had with Shazam is the large focus on pop music while leaving many other genres in the dust.

Shazam has taken this into account and is now expanding their database by 2 million songs, that’s a database growth of 30 percent! This brings the grand total to over 8 million available songs. It appears that Shazam is gaining the upper hand in what seems to be a down hill battle. My personal music collection still stumps this application more often than not, but when it comes to the radio there is no contest.

Will Mils, head of music said, “This increase in our database cements Shazam’s position as the leading mobile music discovery service in the world. With our strong music alliances we gain access to the most relevant music well before many other music services, which ensures users can discover popular and niche music all over the globe.

No matter where they are, or what they’re listening to, users are taken on an unforgettable musical journey. This unequaled user experience and superior technology has made Shazam the perfect partner for mobile phone operators and handset manufacturers across the world.”

  1. thank goodness, because i use this application the most because I am a DJ
  2. Cool!

Now they have 8 million songs available...

I'm glad because it's more to music then just Pop/Rock
  3. I'm wondering how they pay for all of this. The servers required to quickly take an uploaded sample of a song, compare the waveforms against 8 million songs with enough accuracy to guess the song and return it back to the user in a few seconds is a monumental task. Their server farm must be massive. They have to be getting money from iTunes and AmazonMP3 for every track purchased when it comes as a referral from them.
  4. So this will stream? If it's more than just a db for recognizing songs and linking to myspace ill check it out. So far streamFusion and imeem lack the organization and category features I need to become a frequent user so I am still very int he market.
  5. so what's better shazam or imeem? I wish i had enough memory to have both!
  6. I was in Banana Republic last night and I really liked the song that was playing. I didn't have Shazam, however, so I had to hurry up and download it -- OVER EDGE -- since the Galleria doubles as a large steel 3G blocker. I managed to dl, install, and use the app right as the song was ending. To my satisfaction (and surprise) it successfully identified the song as "Every Party" by Erlend Oye.

    I smiled.

No, it just recognizes the song that's playing and allows you to buy it through the AmazonMP3 store.

The are two completely different apps. One plays music, one listens to it. I have both on mine.

No, it just recognizes the song that's playing and allows you to torrent it at a later time using your favorite torrent client

Napster is still around, just not free.

Not to mention that torrents are a good way to get caught illegally downloading stuff.

Newsgroups are where it's at. Faster and damn near impossible to get caught.
  14. I torrent entire starsystems on the daily and I've never been caught. And I have my ports forwarded, too.

I'm sure this post is really contributing to my chances of not getting caught... lol

I did that same thing in about a minute for a friend of mine. My G1 was smoking . . . well, suddenly expeditious, not hot. The DJ was talking over the last 10 seconds of the song (broadcast radio is bogus) and Shazam still got the song. Amazing!
  16. That's a-may-zuh-zing

Boosh! Well, why don't you just take your port and . . . shut up!

networking double entendre, does it even get old?

sockets, ports, interface, p2p, etc etc etc

Anyway, Shazam is pretty fantastic although I've been stumping it a lot lately. Stumping it right in the port.
  20. it allowed me to correctly identify an exreme song for bar trivia last night, my friend after we got the answer correct decided that if most people don't realize the technology exists its not cheating.

    thanks shazam!

I hate laughing so hard that no noise comes out. Cause from far away, or to people who don't realize I'm laughing, I just look like I'm stuck in limbo between crying and straining... with my mouth wide open.

They can't write you up if you stop breathing right? "Oh look . . . Natalie (I can't remember your name so now it's Natalie) is blue and twitching on the floor. I was going to reprimand her for putting 20 customers in a row on hold while she did nothing but torture her G1, but . . . . she's dead now."
  23. My name actually is Natalie, and I have been written up for much dumber things...

Oh wow. My memory works now and then. I used to know a Natalie. I liked her. Then she overdosed on Valentine's Day. Stay away from heroin, Natalie!

Sorry, that was way too serious.

Did you ever getwritten up for getting on top of your cubicle and shooting the TPS reports which you had made into paper airplanes at coworkers? That would be cool.

No, I got written up for leaving Dental insurance off of a proposal after the sales person said "Yeah, let's just not worry about the Dental."

Also in that same write up was "Precieved lack of remorse"

It certainly is. And Torrent is group sex, free love. . . . must be why it's so popular and successful. Promotes genetic diversity, whereas GNutella supports ________

Good lord, I hope you are paid well.

    Perceived lack of remorse . . . . ahaha . . . Natalie is a corporate sociopath.
  29. Paid well enough to stick with it until I inherit my mothers multi million dollar business in '09.

Can't wait to spit on my boss' desk.

You would be a good candidate since all you can do in DeKalb is spit and run through corn fields!
