ASUS‘ last video teaser hinted at what may be a dual OS tablet or a tablet hybrid, along the lines of its Transformer devices. This time, it seems that the company is suggesting that it will be going knee-deep into the smartphone space.

ASUS is probably more known as a notebook and tablet kind of company. It does have devices with telephony features, but they aren’t ones you’d consider to be conventional smartphones. The low-cost FonePad, for example, is more tablet than phablet, sporting a 7-inch screen. Even the PadFone, whose main unit is a true smartphone, is more popular for its hybrid personality, expressed by sliding into a tablet dock. However, it seems that ASUS will finally be getting its hands full with not one but three smartphones.

Like any teaser, the video is full of ambiguous clues that could go in any direction. What leads us to believe that it is all about smartphones are two hints. The first is the dialing sound that is made whenever the strange balls bounce on the ground. The second is a set of three balls conspicuously marked with the numbers 4, 5, and 6, which could possibly refer to screen sizes.

It will be interesting to see what kind of smartphones will be unveiled by ASUS, who has so far put out budget devices that aren’t necessarily low-powered. Will these be simple and straightforward smartphones or will ASUS have another gimmick up its sleeve to make them more enticing. Be prepared to find out on January 6 at CES 2014 in Las Vegas.
