Advent Vega gets Honeycomb port complete with Hardware Acceleration!
Generally, when it comes to porting Honeycomb over to a tablet that hasn't had the official release of the OS you lose some important features and capability. One of those important features that it lost with every port out there is the hardware acceleration. Without hardware acceleration, the tablets will run Honeycomb, but things slow to a snail's pace when animation and transitions happen making the user experience less than ideal.

Advent Vega Dock now on sale: HDMI and USB
It's taken a while, but the HDMI dock for the Advent Vega tablet has finally gone on sale. Priced at an eminently reasonable £29.99 from PC World, the dock recharges the Vega slate together with giving an HDMI output. There's also a trio of USB ports and a headphones/speakers output. The USBs will work with external storage or a wired keyboard/mouse, for easier control and text entry. Meanwhile, the Tegra 2 processor at the heart of the Vega will pump out 1080p HD to your TV.

Advent Vega Android Tablet Gets its Flash Player Back
Waaay back in December of 2010, the folks at Advent had a rather disturbing set of words to share, all of them adding up to the fact that they'd be pulling Flash Player 10.1 from their Vega tablets until further notice. Why? Because according to Advent, their tablets did “not exhibit the optimal performance that the NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor is capable of running with certain Flash website content.” They went on to mention, back in December, that Flash Player would be restored by early 2011. That time is right the heck now, today!

Advent Vega source code v1.08 released
Advent has released the source code for the Advent Vega tablet, as promised late last year. The code is for the latest official firmware release, v1.08, which was distributed for the tablet earlier this week. While of little use to most end users of the Vega in of itself, it does mean that the hacking community will be able to tease even more interesting mods out of the slate. You can download the source code here; Advent isn't actually hosting it itself, instead relying on Modaco.

Advent Vega gets v1.08 update; still no official Flash
Advent has pushed out a new firmware release for the Vega Tegra 2 tablet, v1.08, said to clear up several of the slate's bugs as well as improve screen responsiveness while on mains power. The release also updates the Vega's WiFi driver. However, the new firmware still doesn't include official Adobe Flash Player 10.1 functionality, which Advent yanked back in December over missing certification. That will be "available soon" the company says.

Viewsonic denies GTablet hardware defects; promises software fix this week

Viewsonic denies GTablet hardware defects; promises software fix this week
Viewsonic has blamed Android and Adobe's Flash for poor first-impressions of its 10.1-inch GTablet slate, suggesting that the reason the Tegra 2 based tablet was pulled from Staples shelves over the weekend was not, as the retailer suggested, because of a "manufacturing defect" but merely a shortfall in "user experience". The GTablet will get a software update by the end of this week that will apparently address complaints about the Tap 'n' Tap UI - including giving owners the opportunity to turn it off altogether - among other things. However, the GTablet will have to wait until the end of January 2011 for an update to Flash Player that will see the plugin certified by Adobe; Viewsonic has been impacted by the same issue that Advent reported earlier this month affecting its Vega tablet. [via SlashGear] Press Release:
ViewSonic Confirms High Performance of GTablet Software Upgrade Release to Improve User Experience WALNUT, Calif. – December 20, 2010 – ViewSonic Corp., a leading global provider of computing, consumer electronics and communications solutions, today responded to recent retailer actions surrounding its GTablet 10.1″ Android 2.2 Tablet. The GTablet, based on the nVidia Tegra II chipset, is one of the fastest Android tablets on the market today, consistently leading industry benchmarks. “We always listen to customers; while they love the hardware, they raised several issues about the user interface,” Jeff Volpe, VP and GM for ViewSonic Americas. “As a result, our software partner is releasing an upgrade that will address customer concerns. Along with great performance improvements, customers will have the flexibility to use both a standard Android interface as well as a user-customizable interface which has been significantly enhanced since the product launch.” Volpe went on to say, “ViewSonic is committed to its tablet endeavors and will continue with new announcements at CES in January.” Current GTablet owners will automatically receive the upgrade through their WiFi connection by Friday, December 24. Users simply need to accept the request to install the upgrade. In addition, Adobe® Flash certification is targeted for the end of January, 2011. In the interim, users can download Flash from various websites that distribute android applications. For the latest on GTablet software updates, please visit ViewSonic.com/gtablet beginning Wednesday, December 22. For general questions, please contact GTablet support at (866) 501-6405.

Advent Vega Flash Player 10.1 pulled over missing certification

Advent Vega Flash Player 10.1 pulled over missing certification
Advent has announced [pdf link] that the version of Flash Player 10.1 shipped on their Vega tablet has not, in fact, passed Adobe's certification testing, and that effective immediately new Vega units will ship without the app pre-loaded. The company expects the newly tested, certified Flash Player 10.1 download to be available "in the early part of 2011." Existing owners with the uncertified Flash Player 10.1 plugin may find their slates aren't as efficient at Flash video playback as they should be, Advent warns, and they'll also be able to install the certified version when it's available. We imagine the uncertified app will be broadly available through unofficial channels in the meantime, since Vega owners will likely prefer unoptimized functionality over no functionality whatsoever. Press Release:
Important update on the Advent Vega The Advent Vega has an nVidia Tegra 2 dual core 1GHz processor, but we have just learned that the version of Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1 installed on the tablet has not completed the required certification tests by Adobe. Adobe certification is a process of testing the Adobe Flash Player on the device to ensure a consistently high user experience and compatibility with common websites e.g. iPlayer and 4 on Demand. We would like to reassure customers who have already purchased an Advent Vega, which included an uncertified version of the Adobe Flash Player 10.1; that we stand behind the quality of these tablets. However, we do need to obtain a properly certified version of the Adobe Flash Player 10.1 before pre-installing it onto further models. The certification process is currently underway and we estimate this will be complete in the early part of 2011. New stocks of Advent Vegas purchased after 13th December 2010 will not have Adobe Flash Player 10.1 pre-installed, but we will be providing a seamless and free-of-charge download of the certified version as soon as it is available. This download will also be available as an update to users who have already obtained the Advent Vega which includes the uncertified Flash Player 10.1. 1. What does this mean for me? a) If you have purchased an Advent Vega prior to 13th December 2010 Your device has an uncertified version of Adobe Flash Player 10.1. As a result, it may have not exhibit the optimal performance that the nVidia Tegra 2 processor is capable of running with certain Flash website content. Once we obtain a certified version of Flash Player 10.1 for the Advent Vega, we will provide a seamless, free-of-charge download to this version. The certified software will be available to download from our website. http://www.myadventvega.co.uk b) If you are planning to purchase an Advent Vega from 13th December 2010 onwards Your device will be shipped without the Adobe Flash Player 10.1 pre-installed. As soon as we obtain certification for Adobe Flash Player 10.1 we will provide a seamless, free-of- charge download from our website. http://www.myadventvega.co.uk 2. What do I do next? For all customers we recommend registering your Advent Vega at http://www.myadventvega.co.uk. Registering your Advent Vega will ensure we have your email address and contact details up to date. Once we have a certified version of Flash Player 10.1 available we will email all customers with an easy to follow set of instructions to install the new software and enable hardware accelerated Flash Player 10.1 support on your Advent Vega.
