As smartphones screens become better with its higher resolutions and AMOLED displays, this brings about both advantages and problems as well. Yes, you get better looking screens, but it also causes eye strain (and sometimes maybe damage) because it is just too bright, even when you adjust it through your phone’s built-in settings. But of course, there’s an app to help you with that, as Screen Filter helps your gadget become more eye-friendly, and battery-friendly as well.

For times when you just want to read an ebook or play a game without attracting too much attention and to give your eyes a break as well, Screen Filter applies a shade or a dimmer, beyond the natural brightness settings of your smartphone. It also gives you easy access to adjusting this setting through several available widgets. The slider has a logarithmic control as well to ensure better control. And if the app thinks your setting is already too low, it will give you a prompt to make sure that you really want it that way or if you just made a mistake.

Another cool plug-in with Screen Filter is that you can set certain brightness levels, depending on the time of day or where you are. For example, you know that as the sun goes down you would need a brighter screen, so set the brightness levels at 70% by 7PM and it will automatically do so. Or if you cannot turn off your phone when you’re at the cinema, you can set it up that whenever you enter a movie theatre, the brightness level would automatically go to 30%.

Sometimes though, you could unintentionally turn your whole screen to black with this app. Just pull out the battery or in some phones like the Nexus 7, you can hold the power button for 10 seconds to restart. Then just uninstall/reinstall the app so you can use it properly again. Screen Filter is available for free from the Google Play Store.

  1. Do you think using a screen filter may cause a long term damage to the screen? Like going below the “minimum operating power” ?

  2. I used Screen Filter app for a while and I liked it, but then I discovered Lux Auto Brightness which is much more better! It allows auto brightness adjustments but it also lets you set different brightness levels for different conditions!
It’s one of the app I installed into all my devices! Cannot stay without it..!
