Although there does appear to be a few people getting the promised Android 2.2 Froyo update via Kiew Mini from T-Mobile, there’s a general disagreement amongst the rest of the population not quite able to access the yogurt. If you’ll take a look at TmoNews they do appear to have a legitimate internal email saying that the update will be appearing today and that the update will come via Kies Mini and that you can grab support from the official T-Mobile forum, but therein lies the question – where’s the sticky thread?

On the other hand it could just be that T-Mobile hasn’t sent out the official notice outside their internal emails, and therefor of course there would be no official support in the forums – but who knows?

Have you gotten the update work?

  1. just download kies, make sure hooked via usb befor launching kies.
under app in settings go to usb settings tick kies before connecting to pc

  2. Downloading now from Kies. I can’t believe it took a class action lawsuit to motivate them to release the update. T-Mobile and Samsung you really damaged your name with the tech world. Most of the population doesn’t even care (I am guessing) or even know there is an update for this phone, but we are the one who can bring down your companies stock because we are the one who blog, rate, and control the internet…fools

  3. I was able to update via Kies Mini. However I do not like that i am now stuck with Swipe or Samsuck keyboard options. I have to reroot now. 🙂

  4. Note:

If you get an “unregistered device” error in Kies, that is ok. Just reboot your computer after the patch and everything will work!

  5. The update is out and you guys are STILL trying to ruffle feathers. Unbelievable.

@T-Mobile/Samsung Fools: there was never a class action lawsuit. Don’t believe everything you read.. especially not stuff you read on *this* site.

  6. About time for the Vibrant users but I feel that a lot of the hate on TMO is unwarranted. While I understand the frustration from the Vibrant owners why not consider the fact that the the other Galaxy S phones on other carriers haven’t even been mentioned. So where’s the hate for Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T? The Captivate, Fascinate, and Epic need 2.2 as well….just saying.

  7. I was having a lot of issues this morning updating my vibrant via kies mini. After calling tech support, and being turned away by the friendly, but technically impaired, people at Tmobile. I was able to update my phone using the following methods.
    1) Register your device at the samsung website.
    2) Install Kies mini.
    3) Put your phone in debugging mode
Settings-> applications -> usb debugging mode.
    4) Agree to the warnings.
    5) Connect your vibrant with the supplied USB cord.
    6) Hit update.
    7) Sit back and take a deep sigh of relief.

I was having issues with Kies not recognizing my device and saying it was not registered. Hopefully, this method helps everyone else who had my problem… Happy updating!

  8. I downloaded Kies Mini, hooked up a few Vibrants from work here, and they each updated without issue.

Didn’t even have to register on Samsung’s site.

Seems to be fairly “Real” since it comes with new T-Mobile apps like T-Mobile TV and Wifi Calling (It’s about time!).

  9. USB Debugging on CAN cause an issue with Kies and detection; just updated a friends phone that wouldn’t recognize either – even with USB plug in set to prompt on the phone. Turning off USB debugging and reinserting the USB cable worked.

  10. Thank you T Mobile. 8Mbps steady!!! download

    Linpack average 17.x

Quadrant barely better than the old version (makes me doubt on how good quadrant really is, the diff in the UI is amazing!)

Samsung, nice job. Why can’t you get it right the first time, why the rework. You are not off the hook. If you provide other updates and improve your quality, you may have gained back a few brownie points.

The update makes Samsung Galaxy S feel great!, fast, smooth, great graphics, nice touch.

The following is what I have done and is provided AS IS, we don’t assume any responsibility or know if your device may brick or not!.

Its just the steps we took to upgrade. If your device bricks its your choice, I DO NOT recommend you follow my instructions, if you do, you do so at your own risk.:

    1. Download Mini Kies,
    2. Install Kies as an Admin user
    3. Charge up your battery.
    4. On your phone, goto.
    – Menu
    – Settings
    – Applications
    – USB Settings
    – Choose KIES
    5. Connect your phone to your computer using the USB Cable
    6. Make sure you have a good connection to the Internet from your computer (you will need it!).
    7. Fire up Kies as an Admin user.
    8. Wait a while until the phone is recognized (if Kies fails to do so, or fails to update, just close it and try again)
    9. Press Update when you see the Option (DONT disconnect your phone from now on) this may take up to an hour on slow connections (maybe more). IMPORTANT
    – DONT disconnect your phone,
    – DONT disconnect the INTERNET from your computer,
    – DONT turn off your computer
    – DONT let your computer enter sleep mode.
    10. When complete let your phone reboot (it will take a while 10 min?)
    11. Disconnect the Internet.

Nice upgrade, sorely needed. The GPS didn’t lock fast indoors, but it gave a 5000 ft approximation very fast. It also slowed down the phone considerably, so Samsung still needs to work this out.

  11. I installed and reinstalled keis, rebooted my pc many times, registered on samsung website, used debugging mode, tried it on 3 computers… Nothing seems to get that unrecognized device off keis.

  12. Ok…….I really can’t get the whole idea of what Kies is and what i should download it onto and from where. If anyone can help me out with this I would greatly greatly appreciate it!

      • Just got back from T-mobile. Sim Card did not fix my MMS issue. Turns out if you format the contact number like this 000-000-0000 it seams to work.

    • I had the same problem. A message was displayed showing: “currently unable to…”
On your phone, go to: Settings/Wireless and network/Mobile networks. In this layout make sure the option “Use packet data” is checked.
Close everything and try to send the message again.

  13. after several tries kies mini finally recognized my phone was plugged in. i’m thinking this is great…finally! nope…while the software was downloading to my phone the software crashed and now the phone is toast. have to send it into samsung under warranty and have them factory reset it. omfg!!!

  14. First, bricked my phone. Second, now I can’t send MMS after getting 2.2 to install correctly… Third, call T-mobile about the issue. Found out that they outsource now and couldn’t understand what, Manmeet, wanted me to do other than go back to 2.1 after months of waiting for 2.2! Is this T-mobile’s game of “let’s see how many customers we can lose”? At least I don’t have to keep breaking my Dell laptop to see how it’s going in India that day!

    • Had the same issue of not being able to send MMs….Ever think about having tmobile swap out the sim card? Thats what happened when I originally installed 2.2 on my Vibrant. Went to Tmobile and had them swap out the sim card and was able to send MMS after that. The update can fry the sim card in phones. Had that happen twice with the updates on my Motorola Cliq.

  15. @Garrickr

This froyo build (KA6) wasn’t really that great. I’ve heard a lot of my friends having different bugs on each one. One can’t send MMS, one gps just doesn’t work…

This build is to shut the people up for waiting on froyo… There’s a KA7 build which means they are still working on this.

Problem with people is that they can’t wait. They kept asking, bugging, asking, nagging t-mo and samsung. Samsung just says, “ok you want froyo, here’s one of our builds” install it. lol and now a lot of the same people asking for froyo has problems.

    • Great video from Wirefly.com. I updated (it took a few tries — they should really be doing this automatically over the air!) and am actually quite surprised by how much better the experience is. Faster, more stable, better battery life, improved Swype keyboard, improved email viewing, improved calendar, flash browser.. I am a very happy camper.

  16. This is not an update for all Vibrant owners. This is only an update for Vibrant owners who own 32 bit Windows computers. Everyone else is out of luck.

  17. Ran the update from Kies on 1/21. Worked like a dream. Only took a matter of minutes to update. Within the course of 30 minutes I updated Kies, and had 2 vibrants updated. Not sure what all the fuss is about with people having issues.

  18. Well, I have been trying repeatedly, on multiple machines, and kies just crashes the moment it sees the phone.

All Win7 64. Glad it’s working for some people, but this hasn’t really improved my opinion of Samsung.

  19. had to use the original micro usb cable from samsung, with the generic one, the kies would not recognize the phone.
downloaded the flash after the ugrade, but still can not play hulu

  20. The only problem that I have seen so far is that I cannot open the display settings menu. It keeps “force stopping” it. Any ideas?

  21. I’ve been trying to do the update all day. Kies Mini keeps telling me I have an unregistered device. I’ve been on Samsung’s website to register my phone, I do the registeration and then once I’m done, it says the phone still isn’t registered. On the website, and on Kies Mini. Even their website doesn’t work right.

  22. I was looking forward to an OTA udpate to froyo for my Vibrant. I formerly had a G1 with a cyanogen mod.
This guide was great I was able to get me some FrozenYogurt this morning and am loving it so far.
I have to say I have been disappointed with touchwiz, it doesn’t seem to really bring anything to the table that a nice theme or some custom shortcuts couldn’t do.

Biggest Gripe – text bubbles (Blech) and long pressing on a text contact to call not available : I used that all the time on my G1
Nicest Part of update – Speed baby Speed, screen widgets, big beautiful screen, and the little cursor indicator dragg thingy!

  23. i did the update on my vibrant and it worked fine dont think it was cleaned up before it was launched but the information should be available in the forums.tmobile.com/android

I downloaded smasung mini put my device in debugging mode and connected and it updated.

  24. Upgraded my phone last week and it’s working great. GPS wonders from time to time but overall, it work pretty good. Great speed and I’m pleased. I had try several time to do it and Mini Keis won’t reconize my phone, Until I realized I had to turn off my virus protection and firewell ( thanks to the forum’s) and the update went well. Thanks to all with your postings.

  25. Had to have my phone replaced already after the Android 2.2 update. Having worse signal issues since the upgrade than with 2.1. Am loving the flash, and the phone seems to run faster on certian things. Bluetooth support is screwy too, my Q2 and T1 by Blueant Wireless seem to have a problem connecting and staying connected. The startup is a bit lengthy, and the thing likes to freeze initially after start up, but advanced task killer helps. Lost access to many paid apps after the upgrade. So far really pleased with the 2.2 upgrade, wish they would work out the few bugs in the release.

  26. I don’t know if you guys saw it, but Wirefly posted a video showing what you can expect in terms of a performance increase on a Vibrant that’s updated from 2.1 to 2.2. They ran benchmark tests (Quadrant and Smartbench) on a Vibrant with 2.1, then updated that Vibrant and re-ran the tests. You can see the video at:

  27. I tried following the T Mobile Forums instructions but the KiesMini wouldn’t show any updates. I think this is really phoney and inconsiderate of both T Mobile and Samsung. Today marks the 6 month anniversary since I purchased my 2 Vibrants. One got an update for GPS back in October, but the other unit has not received an OTA for it. I called TM and they said they would be sending it within 3-5 days, but weeks went by and nothing. The next attempt to get it by OTA, I was told I’d have to go through Kies.Mini. So there you have it. KiesMini isn’t giving me any options and both Samsung and TM are silent, except TM store said there will not be any OTA for GPS nor Froyo 2.2. I feel cheated and defrauded by these two rascals and I’ve been paying them $200 a month for service on the two units. I like the phone, but why are they promising and promising, and delivering nothing. Brent

    • I have gotten the upgrade, downloaded Kies Mini (KiesMini-Vibrant v11011.4) from Samsungs website, hooked my phone up to the computer ran it and got the upgrade to 2.2 FROYO.UVKA6 and by the way I did NOT get a text from T-Mobile that the upgrade was available, I think they want to tear it apart and make it worthless first…lol…I got it because this cool guy I deal with at T-Mobile has the Samsung Vibrant also and he told me how to do it as we were comparing our Apps. I like the new upgrade it changed the icons from ugly greyscale to neon so you can actually see them. Try to do it again, remember that after you connect your phone to the computer you have to select Kies Mini on the drop down, NOT the USB or Hard disk options.

      • Turn off your virus protection and fire well. If you have them on, you’ll have problems loading Froyo 2.2

  28. I updated to the 2.2 and now my phone is a lil slower, I cant open Avatar, and no longer have silent mode. Any one else with the same issues?

    • No I don’t have any issues with my update. You should have your silent mode along with auto rotate and bluetooth in your notifications, if not, you may have downloaded the wrong software.

  29. Hey I had the same issues trying to update to froyo 2.2 I tried it on a few computers from some friends. And I fantasy
finaly go it to work.i got problems like unregistered device and a few other things..either wipe out your phone and try again our go tio a friend and borrow their computers.remember to mount your phone into samsung kies from your drag down screen after connecting and shut down all the fire walls from the computer.if you follow it correctly you should have no problem.

  31. Just upgraded to 2.2 took less than 5 min dont care for the new display doesn’t look as “vibrant” any one else agree or is it just me?

  32. My thoughts on this; all of our updates were first coming via satellite and into our phones and that was the reason we had to turn our phones off everyday. Now, we have to educate ourselves on how to upgrade the software on our phones ourselves making the phone companies jobs even easier. Now there is the Galaxy S2 with the same 2.2 software that you can be sure will be first to get the upgrade before any of us who have the Vibrant will ever see the link to do so.Quit making so many phones as fast as you can produce them and work on the ones you have and make the quality of them better!
