In an announcement that probably surprised no one, except those die-hard users (if there are any at all), Samsung will be shutting down its Milk Video service by November this year. It is redirecting people instead to the still existing and slightly more successful music counterpart, Samsung Milk Music. It isn’t the same of course, but if you’re used to Samsung made apps, then it may be the next best thing for you come November.

While no one was really surprised nor heartbroken that they would be closing down the app, what was surprising was how they announced it. Instead of a press release or something, they opted to just unceremoniously place the announcement on the app description. The (maybe 5) users would normally not read app descriptions of already-installed apps, but still they chose to put the announcement there.

So what made Samsung Milk Video fail? Well for one the video streaming service was limited to Samsung devices. And if you rely on exposure and sharing for your app to continue to grow, then you probably will not use that strategy for distribution. And unless you have something really compelling about your video sharing app, then you probably have no chance against bigger players like YouTube, Vimeo, etc.

If you do use the Samsung Milk Video service, you still have until November 20 to enjoy using it. It’s actually not clear if they will actually delete/unpublish the app or if they will just “end support” as their announcement says, meaning there will be no more updates ever but it will still be there, useless but still present.
