It really was a good move for Samsung to release their new flagship devices earlier than their tradition as that may have played a big part in the continued success of their Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge devices. The combined sales of the two smartphones may reach 25 million units by the end of June. This is of course far better than the performance of last year’s flagships, the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. Sales are expected to slow down in the next few months, as anticipation for the new Galaxy Note builds up.

As early as April, the company new the 2016 flagships will already outsell last year’s devices. While the early launch has definitely helped, there are also other factors that may have contributed to its success. One factor is that they were more aggressive in pushing these smartphones, probably after the disappointing numbers of all three of the S6 handsets from last year.

Of course, the slightly better quality (dust and water resistance, bringing back the microSD card, better main camera) of the devices played a big part as well. Even better news for Samsung is that the Galaxy S7 edge is selling more than the Galaxy S7. And so since the former is more expensive than the latter, this means high profit margins for the OEM by the time the second quarter ends.

While sales have slowed down as expected, a lot of people are also looking forward to the release of the new flagship phablet. Whether it will be called the Galaxy Note 6 or Galaxy Note 7, as rumors have it, that will not matter as much as what the new device will offer. It is expected to be announced by August so we still have a couple more months to speculate.
