News leaked out today that an Android 2.2 (Froyo) update for the Samsung Captivate was imminent and the evidence was the update page itself. Then, it appears Samsung heard about it and promptly pulled the page with no explanation given. Originally, the update was to be rolled out via the “Kies Mini” method, rather than traditional over the air option. Last week, AT&T Captivate users were given hope the change was coming with the news that support for the frozen dairy desert OS was being added, so why the Samsung page was being abruptly pulled is anyone’s guess.

Changes are rumored to include a new home page tips widget that helps configure the screen with shortcuts. There’s also to be improved security with the addition of alpha-numberic password options and Exchange policy enforcement. Remote wipe should also be coming through the Exchange administrator desktop as well. Other additions include the popular item on anyone’s want list, that of support for up to five users through the portable hotspot option with tethering and the ability to use the phone as a modem, a self timer for the camera/camcorder, and better kernel memory management. Only time will tell is Samsung will actually release the update or use the stock “it was a placeholder page” excuse to back away from it. But one thing is certain, Captivate users are read and waiting for it.

Until then, if you can’t really wait, Android Community has a page on how to root your phone and install it anyway.

    • Before you get rid of an awesome phone try a custom ROM. Its the only reason I kept this phone. Serendipity was made for the Captivate. Try it out.

    • The problem is Samsung here. HTC and Motorola do not face much problems while updating their phones – I don’t know wtf happens to Samsung. There were warnings even before I bought the phone – that Samsung’s post sale customer service is awful and man, hasn’t that been so true. It appears as if Samsung just doesn’t make much effort to get their updates pass the carriers and all its customers are living in this unending uncertainty expecting something from them. Awful company.

  1. Screw samsung and at&t,i am tired of waiting like so many others,i am on my way to htc or motorola whoever can give me the best deal!i am ending my 7 year stint with samsung.

  2. This is absolutely the last Samsung phone I ever buy. Their page touting the Captivate still says it ships with 2.1 and a free upgrade to 2.2. When? The turn of next century?

  3. To me I don’t think its Samsung’s fault entirely, its more @ATT they have been dragging their feet for some reason. They have a great device that needs some tweaking, but not care about the customers. They are more worried about their iPhail numbers since verizon has gotten one. Regardless it needs to come out, besides I’ve seen more articles starting to pop up about the fact that this has happened. AGAIN!

  4. Listen everyone… This is definitely imminent; as I already have the Froyo 2.2 since about a month and a half ago. I had to download it searching through Dr. Google (“Froyo samsung captivate”)…
It’s definitely worth the wait, and even if it didn’t have the Froyo before; I thought it was a really good phone. Now it’s quite amazing, as I have many friends with the iPhone 4, and the EVO; they still like my Captivate better. 😉

  5. I spent 3 hours at an ATT service center yesterday trying to find a Captivate that worked. After trying 5 different ones, the rep told me to call ATT so they would switch it with another model for me. I total 6 Captivates would not work properly! I ended up keeping the one I went in with because it downloaded apps and the email was finally working, but the gps doesn’t work at all. Oh, well, HTC Inspire here I come.

    • My first one on ATT worked perfectly even gps. No shutdown or anything. Still waiting for promised 2.2 that they are dragging ass on however

    • good decision, after having my captivate freeze on me for 4 ho!s one day (after 4 battery pulls and several restarts still frozen), and taking an hour to open and reply to a text, I finally had enough and decided to step up to an Inspire. Great move…I love it…only problem is the screen gets stuck in landscape sometimes (no biggie) and as of now I cant connect to the web without wifi. LMAO, oh well, just had that fixed while typing. Loving this Inspire! Samsung will never see my money again, I’ve owned 3 samsung phones and all 3 were garbage. I know 3 people with captivates and they are all having freezing issues…just not as bad as mine. It feels good to attempt to use the phone and it works instead of starting a call hours before i need to make it, or ignoring texts until the phone magically unfreezes.!

  6. order of importance – T-mobile , then comes Sprint ….. and rest are lost….. So guys you know know who do u want to switch to if you plan galaxy phone next.

“There will  finally be an update to Android 2.2 Froyo for the Samsung Galaxy S,  Samsung Captivate from AT&T.  AT&T announced via its Facebook page today, that tomorrow AT&T will post a link to the Samsung website along with instructions on how to to install the update for the Samsung Captivate to Android 2.2 Froyo. Because AT&T said it will be placing a link, we think the update will require the Samsung Kies Mini app and an USB connection for the update”
