Samsung announced yesterday that it has started mass producing its spanking new memory technology – an industry-first 8 gigabit (bandwith) low power DDR4 mobile RAM (LPDDR4). That is indeed a mouthful, but the speed on these babies should make you drool as well.

Ostensibly, these new 20nanometer chips offer at least twice the performance of the current 4 gigabit (bandwith) LPDDR3 technology being used in mobile devices worldwide. Samsung says that this technology could very well usher to the mainstream Ultra-High Definition (UHD) large-screen smartphones and tablets, and with these new RAM chips, they have very good reason to believe that.

Due to an I/O data rate of up to 3,200 megabits per second (Mbps) – double what the typical DDR3 DRAM used in PCs and servers can do – these new babies can support UHD video recording and playback, as well as allowing continuous shooting of high-resolution images with over 20 megapixels. Add to that, the new technology also has reduced power consumption, allowing for high volume tasking even at low voltages.

Expect these new RAM modules to be standard in around a year or so. These will make it easier for devices to start breaking the 3GB barrier. Will Samsung’s new flagship – the Samsung Galaxy S6 – be the first to have 4GB of RAM (or more)? Which is your pick for the first device to sport 4GB of RAM and make efficient use of it as well?
