O2 Germany have officially announced the Samsung I7500 Android cellphone, the first device for both Samsung and the carrier.  Tipped over the weekend, the I7500 has a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, together with a 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen running at 320 x 480.

Other specs include GPS, WiFi b/g and HSPA, together with 40GB of storage (8GB internal; up to 32GB via a microSD card).  There’s also Bluetooth 2.0, a 1,500mAh battery and the usual bevy of Google applications and access to the Android Market.  The whole thing measures 115 x 56 x 11.9 mm, and still finds room for a 3.5mm headphone socket and microUSB port.

The Samsung I7500 will be available exclusively from O2 in Germany from June 2009.  Pricing for the handset itself has not been announced, but the carrier has confirmed that no specific tariffs or service plans will be required; buyers will be able to choose any from O2’s range.

Press Release:

O2 exclusively launches: the first Android mobile phone with Google Services from Samsung

 Samsung I7500 with 5 megapixel camera and brilliant touch display
 Simple and intuitive use
 Access to Google Mail, Google Maps and the Android market by one
click

MUNICH. Telefónica O2 Germany strongly expands its mobile phone product
range for the mobile internet. The first Android lifestyle mobile phone with
Google Services from Samsung kicks off the new offer. The Samsung I7500 is
the first Android mobile phone provided by a leading brand manufacturer and
will be exclusively available from O2 as of June 2009. In addition to the form
factor and design with mere 11.9 mm thickness, it primarily stands out by its
simple and intuitive use. The mobile internet offers a great experience for
beginners and professional users alike. The Samsung I7500 combines an
expandable Android platform with first-class equipment: a brilliant touch
screen display, and a 5 megapixel camera with LED Flash and GPS.
“The Samsung I7500 offers our customers the best internet experience based on the
Android platform provided by Google“, says Lutz Schüler, Managing Director
Marketing and Sales for Telefónica O2 Germany. “The Samsung I7500 kicks off a
series of exciting devices for the mobile web which we will launch in the next couple
of months. There is something for everyone: from beginners to heavy users. And, we
put our focus on strong brands, simple use and design.”
Classic applications from the PC world can be comfortably accessed by one click on
the big touch screen when users are on the move. Thanks to the open platform of the
Google operating system, users are able to optimally customize the device to their
own requirements. A variety of applications and services is available in the Android
market. The contact to friends is guaranteed by integrated and freely available Web
2.0 applications like Facebook, Flickr and Instant Messaging. Customers are always
up to date anywhere they go due to the automatic synchronization of emails, contacts
and appointments of Google accounts. All other popular email accounts can also be
accessed.
The integrated GPS receiver enables the comprehensive use of Google Maps: local
positioning, detailed route description and simple navigation. The application
Wikitude available in the Android market allows customers to access details of
unknown sights via photos on the web. The combination of a camera, GPS and an
internet browser turns into a personal and interactive guide.
As the first Android mobile phone, the Samsung I7500 offers a 5 megapixel camera
with LED Flash. The big 3.2“ AMOLED display ensures the brilliant representation of
photos and videos and reduces the battery power due to the energy-saving
technology. The battery has generous dimensions (1500 mAh) and ensures that
users enjoy long calls and access to the web. The device also includes WLAN
(802.11 b/g) and Bluetooth 2.0. Supporting various multimedia codec formats the
I7500 is a multimedia all-rounder. With ist memory capacity of up to 40 GB it offers
enough space for pictures, music and videos.
The Samsung I7500 will be exclusively available in all O2 Shops, the specialized
trade or on the internet from June 2009. The device can be combined with all tariffs
and data packages.

  1. I think that bit about 40GB Internal storage is wrong, it says 'memory capacity of up to 40 GB' which more than likely means 8GB onboard, expandable up to 40GB via a 32GB microSD card. Probably means you can add microSD card slot to the list of features though!
  2. Yes, post is updated to reflect that (though you may need to refresh in order to see it). I was going from O2's own English translation, which omits some information from the original German version.

  3. Engadget publishes Samsung's press-release: http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/27/s...ndroid-dreams/ OK, T-Mobile USA users, the Samsung i7500 has 3G1700 support!
  4. I thought Samsung was releasing in other countries first because "you can release one phone on multiple carriers" outside the US, unlike inside? Don't see how an exclusive deal fits those plans.

    Android on Sprint, come on!
  5. i think this may be my next android phone.... the specs are right but im not sure of the quality of samsung devices...
  6. 3.2 inch amoled display. That's nice.
  7. YES!! I will def be buying this!
  8. lazy I'll vouch for samsung phones, I had the t509? (maybe t519) it was as solid built phone I've ever used. they are in my top 3 of phone makers, which puts this phone way up on my desire to own list.

in other words I'll be keeping an eye on this, because I want one!

i know what you mean... it seems like alot of people believe that less buttons are better.... and touchscreens are some kind of "futurisitic technology"

less parts = less prone to breakage?

haha, futuristic technology would allow me to use the touchscreen during COLD Chicago winters with gloves on lol

lol you can... just use a "pogo stylus."
  24. my favorite part is the old school d-pad, i kinda think its easier to use than the ball for things like gaming, plus the flash! 5Mp camera! and 3.5mm headset!

  28. I am getting pretty excited about all the android news here of late. I am not used to keeping any one phone for more than six months, so I am definitely getting the itch for the next one that comes out.

pretty much...I hate getting into contracts as is so....
  32. I usually keep mine in immaculate condition, then sell them on eBay in order to feed my addiction. The G1 is the first one I have actually purchased on contract in years. I usually do eBay.
  33. yeah I'm really considering this samsung phone, unlocked style....

better start saving up some more $!!

Im pretty sure you will continue with the same carrier for years... might as well take advantage of the man.

Thats like spending $5 on gas when on empty, instead of just filling up the tank, you are going to need gas for the rest of your life.

as the man takes advantage of you of course
  38. Plus sometimes getting the phone at the 2year price + ETF is still cheaper than buying a phone out right. Expecially if you keep it in good condition and re-sell on ebay/craig's list.

That how I continue to get new phones all the time.
  39. idk, every single phone I've had, I've managed to keep it in great condition for the 2 years and then I move on...who would want to buy my very nice looking pantech C300 *now*???? It works and hell, I believe it's over 3 years old lol

if all I would be saving is $40, I would have a hard time of signing over another 2 years over

Wow, you went from the "Jitter Bug" to an actual smart phone... very good move!

    no pun intended

I've actually kept my phones for LONGER than contract durations and rejected free upgrades in the past. As geeky as I am... "cell phone tech" was the only type I NEVER cared about. That is -- until Android came along.
  42. The release will be next week! But only in Germany^^
Check this site out for newest informations: http://www.i7500.de
  43. I'm wondering if Google will release an ADP version of this phone through their developer network. If so, count me in!
