Google still has Glass in beta, but Samsung may be nipping at their heels. A new report suggests Samsung is working on a Google Glass competitor, and readying it for release later this year. The heads-up wearable is said to be called “Gear Glass”, suggesting it’s may be the one-sided wearable we’ve heard about previously.

Via Business Korea, we get word of a mysterious, unnamed source within the confines of Samsung sneaking word out of the building that a wearable is coming. The unsung hero claims Samsung’s wearable will come this Fall, unveiled at IFA to a worldwide audience:

We rolled out the smartwatch first, and have secured a considerable amount of smart glass-related technology and patents. Following the roll out of our smart watch Galaxy Gear in September last year, we are slated to introduce our smart glass Gear Glass this September.

We’ve heard of Samsung working on a heads-up wearable before, so this isn’t new. It is worthy of a doubtful tone, though. Unnamed sources providing no workups of what the device will look like, or offering up pics of the wearable. If it were in for a release at IFA in the Fall, Samsung would likely have a working model of the wearable. Instead, just speculation and innuendo.

We want to know what you think about this. Are you excited to see what Samsung can bring to the table, or are you waiting for Google Glass? Do heads-up wearables even interest you? Let us know in the comments section below!

  1. I don’t mind Samsung doing knock-offs, as much as them just copying every bad idea along with them (such as Apple’s one-button design). Now if Samsung made an inconspicuous Glass-like device that perhaps could be hidden under existing glasses they could make a fortune, but what they don’t understand is that most people don’t want to draw attention to themselves. This statistically also includes most disabled people that refuse truely helpful devices because they don’t want to stand out as retards. Samsung should not assume just because Google did a lot of marketing that they also did a lot of market research on Glass.
