Samsung already tipped its hand on the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches, but there’s a third wearable for MWC 2014, the Samsung Gear Fit. The first of Samsung’s smart wrist-wear to include a curved AMOLED display, the Gear Fit’s touchscreen comes in at 1.84-inches and an unusual, scrolling-ticker-like resolution of 432 x 128.

Where the Gear 2 wants to be more of an all-round wearable companion, the Gear Fit is specifically targeting fitness use. It has the same heart rate sensor built into its curved inside face, which takes a reading every ninety seconds and both shows it on-screen if you’re in the pulse app, and pushes it via Bluetooth 4.0 LE to your phone.

However, like the Gear 2 Neo, the Gear Fit also shows notifications from your phone. That includes caller ID, text messages, emails, social networking statuses, alarms, calendar alerts, and pings from other apps. There’s no camera, but you do get real-time health and fitness coaching based on your current heart rate, number of steps you’ve taken, length and quality of sleep, and other metrics.

Samsung will also be opening up the Gear Fit to third-party developers to load their own software, though the company wouldn’t tell us whether, like the Gear 2, it’s Tizen based.

Like the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo the strap is interchangeable, and Samsung will be offering black, grey, and orange versions. The casing itself is IP67 water- and dust-resistant; sensors inside include an accelerometer and gyroscope, and the whole thing measures 23.4 x 57.4 x 11.95 mm and 27g, and has a 210 mAh battery good, Samsung suggests, for 3-4 days of “typical” use.

Samsung will begin the global roll-out of the Gear Fit from April, with pricing yet to be confirmed.
