Building on the success of its Galaxy S4, Samsung has just taken off the covers of a new smartphone targeted at the Chinese market. Although the Galaxy Trend 3 sports the same sleek look as the company’s latest flagship, it packs in hardware that just screams budget price.

It would even probably be fair to say that initial appearances are the only things it actually has in common with the Galaxy S4 that Samsung announced early this year. You might want to head over to our review if you need a refresher on what the Galaxy S4 is all about. It definitely comes in a smaller package, with a 4.3-inch screen that only supports a resolution of 480×800 pixels. It even runs on a low-power 1.2 GHz processor, with no indication of RAM or internal storage other than it’s expandable with a microSD card. It carries a 1,800 mAh battery, which should provide enough juice to the low-end hardware.

It’s not all that bad though. The Galaxy Trend 3 does include the usual variety of connectivity options such Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, and USB 2.0, but no NFC. Supported networks include WCDMA 900 and 2100 and GSM 850/900/1800/1900 bands. At least it also runs a more recent Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. As a bonus, it also has dual SIM standby support, something that is quite common in mobile devices in the Trend 3’s target market.

No pricing details or actual launch date have been released yet but it seems to be available in three color variations: powder pink, black, and white. There will be four Galaxy Trend 3 models released in the Chinese market: an unlocked SM-G3502U, an SM-G3502 for China Unicom, SM-3508 for China Mobile, and SM-3509 for China Telecom.
