Earlier promises from Samsung had the Android 4.3 update beginning for the Galaxy S4 in October. And well, it looks like they are going to be keeping to that schedule. Samsung has begun rolling out Android 4.3 Jelly Bean for the Galaxy S4 (model GT-I9505). Just to clarify, the I9505 is the international model. Or in other words, those with a carrier branded Galaxy S4 likely still have some time to wait.

That thought aside, there are some potentially worthwhile improvements this time around. To begin with, the update will bring TRIM support, which should make the handset run a bit smoother. Support for Samsung KNOX has been added, Samsung Wallet is now pre-loaded and the Galaxy S4 now has support for the Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

Otherwise, remaining items in the changelog include the following

  • OpenGL 3.0 Support
  • ANT+ Support
  • Improved RAM Management
  • Improved Display Color Reproduction
  • Improved TouchWiz Launcher (Fewer launcher redraws, which should mean less lag)
  • New Samsung Keyboard
  • New Samsung Browser
  • New Reading Mode
  • New Camera Firmware

There was also mention of some ‘minor’ UI tweaks. These look to include some adjustments in the Contacts app as well as the Flashlight Widget and dialog boxes. Anyway, as we often see with these bigger updates. Samsung is rolling 4.3 out in batches. For now the update is available over-the-air and using Kies for those in Germany. Aside from confirmation for those in Germany, remaining countries are simply listed as pending.
