The IFA trade show is fast approaching and with it comes a list of the who’s who of the Android smartphone world making announcements and unveiling their latest masterpieces. Among these is Samsung‘s next S Pen-enabled phablet, the Galaxy Note III. But before the device makes its expected debut on September 4, we may have gotten a glimpse of what could possibly be a different body design.

The Galaxy Note III’s specs sounds like a litany of top of the line hardware and software of this smartphone generation: an Exynos 5 Octa-core or a Snapdragon 800 processor, 3 GB of RAM, 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display, 13 megapixel camera with Xenon flash, 3450 mAh battery, and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. But so far, we’ve only had leaked photos of prototypes that doesn’t give any hint as to the finished look of the device. Until now.

We couldn’t be blamed if we presumed that the Galaxy Note III will look just like it’s predecessors. After all, why change a tried and tested design? But if this new patent, which was just awarded to Samsung today, is any indication, the company might have tweaked the style just a bit. The tapered ends seen in profile and the rounded top and bottom plates make a subtle deviation from the standard Note phablet design.

We’re not sure if it’s really for the Galaxy Note III, but the images do indicate a slot presumably for an S Pen, so the patent is definitely for a Note device. We’ll have to wait to find out when all rumors are put to rest in three weeks.

  1. I am leaning towards it not being the Note III. Also, look at the front view, what is up with the right corners if the screen being round? Maybe this is the device we saw them show off at CTIA with the curved edge on the side…

  2. Definitely for a Note III. If this is real and on production now then Samsung just leveled-up the excitement for Galaxy Note 3. I think Samsung is ending 2013 with a very BIG BANG. The curved glass display means Samsung will pursue the peekaboo corner that display notifications.

    I’m drooling!

  3. Wow!..This is a definite win IMHO if this design will be implemented on the Note 3. Matter of fact, I am going to be truly disappointed if they don’t!!

  4. I pray to all the tech gods out there… Please remove the physical home button. It’s such a hassle to have to push a button when everything else is touch. Also, the “hardware” buttons should respond to stylus too.

    • Hardware buttons on the Note 8.0 do respond to the stylus, but the physical home button on the Note II is essential. Don’t like it, get something else.
