It appears that Samsung will really be pushing out a new Android dual-display flip phone sometime this year, with new information being leaked about the rumored Samsung Galaxy Folder smartphone, including photos and a model number. Depending on how things turn out, Samsung might actually be designing two flip phones for two separate markets.

Flip phones were all the rage back in some almost forgotten time, a time before touchscreens took over almost all of a smartphone’s surface area. The form factor hasn’t exactly died out, especially in certain areas of the world, and Samsung seems to be quite serious in keeping it alive for a while. In 2011 and 2012, it released the SCH-W999 and SCH-W2013, respectively, for the Chinese market. Both flip phones run Android and have dual displays, so the company is not that new to the combination.

The Galaxy Folder, with the model number SHV-E400K/SHV-400S, is of a similar design. It is rumored to be running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 clocked at 1.7 GHz and has 2 GB of RAM, powered by a 1820 mAh battery. It is said to have a 3.5-inch touchscreen with a 800×480 resolution and will be shipping with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

This is not the same flip phone described in another leak last week. The phone, codenamed “Hennessy”, has a model number SCH-W789 and sports lower hardware. Leaked information gives it a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 200 chip, 1 GB of RAM and a 320×480 HVGA display. Judging by the model numbers, the Hennessy might be released only in China. The Galaxy Folder, on the other hand, is rumored to launch in the Korean market.

  1. For what it’s worth, and should anyone with any contact with Samsung peruse these forums, I’d love to have a phone like this. I’m one of many consumers who like smartphones and the Android platform and who would love a SMALLER phone that fits easily in one’s pocket. The so-called “mini” versions of the candybar phones currently being offered by several carriers aren’t really “mini” at all. If they’re going to produce all the number of models that they currently do, they might as well provide some real variety in design and style. I hope this makes it to the US.

  2. The flip phone idea is exactly what my partner likes as he does not like change what so ever so this is great. I on the other hand want the high end model of the Samsung Galaxy Note III.
