The Samsung Epic has recently been one of the lucky Samsung phones to get updated to Android 2.2 FroYo, along with the upgrade came a few small issues that were discussed and fixed according to Samsung. Apparently they missed one.

When you take that much time to get an update out, we would expect things to be a little smoother and less buggy, but that isn’t how it turned out. At least they are fixing things. Monday they released a patch for the Android 2.2 EB13 Software that fixes a hardware keyboard problem. According to a few members at XDA the 2.2 update for the Epic brought a small glitch that made texting and typing pretty difficult. When you type a word such as “hello” the double click of L does not get recognized and it writes “helo”, making you constantly go back and fix mistakes. That would be very frustrating.

The smart minds at XDA figured out it was a change in settings with the delay in response with clicking the keys, they have changed it back to the stock Android 2.1 setting on the Epic and this issue has now disappeared. If you feel like changing this and making life easier on the Epic, feel free to check out the source link for all the information

  1. Not all Epic received the update before Sprint pulled the OTA because of all the issues. Samsung left it up on their website for a few days before pulling it down also. To my knowledge they have not released any fixes for any of the issues that have/had been reported including the keyboard. Double letter. I am waiting to see if we ever get a bug free Updated OS.

  2. Can someone tell me after my 2.2 update, why my phone keeps telling me I have a new text message even after I’ve already read it?? The only way to get if from telling me that I have a new text is to page back. Before the update I’ve never had this issue.

  3. How bout the no notification issue. That really bugs me. I have to turn my phone on to see if someone called or left a message. Any one else have this issue?

  4. Just upgraded to android 2.2 last night. It didn’t help the keyboard at all. In fact, it made it even more laggy. Do you actually have to manually download the EB13 patch? I’m going to the sprint store soon and asking them about this issue. I’m so tired of it.

  5. I got the update the second time around (the second half of march) and had a few laggy keyboard issues the first day but the phone caught back up right away. Swype seemed to be a lot more picky about what words it chose so I had to manually remove a lot of weird letter combinations from the swype dictionary.

My main pet peeve is that the sprint specific apps (qik, amazon mp3, sprint navigation, all share and a few others) CONSTANTLY force open in the background but have no trace of them running on the task manager. Due to them force opening, my battery lasts about 6-7 hours (i averaged 16 with heavier use before the update). I’ve even tried a few battery saver and task killer apps only to have them drop the battery life further to about 4-5 hours.

I emphasize that this length is for my phone in an IDLE state, MAYBE sending 2 texts at most or using the calculator once or twice while at work and I still cannot exceed 6 hours of battery life!

Is anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions?

    • Download juice defender and set the settings to default, then download advanced task manager to make it kill apps that you want every-time the screen shuts off. then you’ll be golden!
