We have some fun stuff over here for all your Droid Charge owners, it appears the Android 2.3 Gingerbread we saw leaked a few days ago is now live and available to download for all if you dare. This is an official leaked build of 2.3 Gingerbread for the Droid Charge and from what we are seeing everything works great, but there is reports of HDMI-out not working in this build.

Obviously with a leak like this you’ll have to jump through a few hoops and closely follow some steps to get the update on your own device. We’ve said this more than enough times but as always, be careful and make sure you know what you are doing before attempting the update.

DROID Charge Gingerbread Leak Flashing Instructions [WINDOWS ONLY]

Download Instructions:

Download the ROM and Flashing Utility from this page.
Extract the large ROM file (it’s the 300+MB .7z file) using 7-Zip. Do not place it on your SD card.
Next, you’ll need to install Odin.

Installing Odin (a custom Samsung software flashing utility):

To install Odin, extract the SamsungFlashingUtility.7z file using 7-Zip
Install all four utilities, this includes:

Samsung_USB_Driver_For_Mobile_Phones
VIA USB Drivers 2.3.5.WithMux
SamsungPST SCH-I510 For Verizon (extract again to get the MSI)
SamsungPSTLite FW Setup (extract again and run setup.exe)

To actually run Odin, run “Samsung PST [Lite],” which should appear as a newly installed program.

Flashing Process:

Put your phone into download mode, to do this:
Power down your phone.
Remove the battery.
Plug your phone via USB into your computer.
Hold the Volume Down button
While holding Volume Down, reinsert the battery and wait for the phone to display a boot screen saying “Downloading” or something similar.
If no boot screen displays, while still holding Volume Down, press and release the Power button.
In Odin, un-check ‘F-Reset Time’ and ‘Auto-Reboot’ (on the left).
Also in Odin, click the PDA button and select the .tar.md5 file that you downloaded and extracted.
Make sure that your phone is recognized by Odin (a yellow COM# will be shown in the box).
Press Start, and allow the flashing process to finish. If it fails, retry using the same procedure outlined above. If it passes, unplug the USB cable, remove the battery and reinsert it, and power on your phone.
Get the Netflix apk here and install it (you’ll have to enable non-Market apps in the ‘Application’ settings menu.)

This update will get Netflix working for you Charge users so that is a nice plus, but sadly like we mentioned HDMI-out isn’t working so you can’t stream it over HDMI but I’m sure that will get cleared up any day now. That list of instructions is pretty long so make sure you are up to the task and follow all the steps correctly to avoid issues. Go ahead and flash it if you dare, then share your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. I received the OTA update through Verizon on my Samsung Charge. Not very impressed – USB tether no longer works with through USB input on my in car receiver (apparently SD card and USB are now encrypted??? wtf, why?!).

Device seems to run a little slower than before, especially with the camera and text input.

Wishing I could go back to Froyo..

  2. I also received the update via Verizon and must say certian features do not work any more: the USB tether to my car stereo does not function any more.  also it will not sync with my computer!!!  This update sucks the big one!!!
