The latest update to Samsung’s S Health app sees it coming into its own, and is not anymore just an also ran (pun intended) when it comes to tracking your exercises, workouts and health-related activities. You will now be able to compete with your friends when it comes to step monitoring, organizes your various exercises, and brings you a quicker way to monitor your heart rate. The update was actually released together with the Gear Fit 2 last month, but now is a good time to explore all the new features.

If you’re the competitive type of person, you will probably be able to be more motivated to exercise if there was some type of contest. The Steps challenges on S Health lets you choose a friend to do a one-on-one match with. Just choose the step target and then see who gets to that target first. The app will tell you if you’re falling behind and how many steps you need to take in order to catch up or lead. You also now have a Steps leaderboard to see how you fare compared to your friends or your age group or even all the other people who use S Health. If you have more than one device that tracks your steps, choose the All Steps function so it will consolidate all your data.

The app also now has a Detect workout function which will automatically detect what kind of workout you’re doing if you do it for more than 10 minutes and it logs it of course. You also now have an Auto Pause setting (which you have to turn on manually) so that it will improve its tracking accuracy. There are now more than 40 types of exercise which you can choose to manage so it will have a more accurate record of your workouts.

Lastly, you now have a Quick Measure function so you don’t need to open your S Health app to be able to take your heart rate quickly. Put your finger on a sensor and place your device face down so that it will complete its reading. Your My Page section will give you an overview of your weekly activities, rewards received, program history, and also your personal bests. These should be enough to keep you occupied with your S Health app.

  1. Hi, Is there a way to change an exercise type in s health that has been auto detected wrong.

For example: Go for a run and it detects it as a walk? (I found that insulting :))

I have a Galaxy S7 Edge and Gear S2 Classic
