It was back in November of 2013 when we learned the Snapdragon 805 “Ultra UD” processor would be heading to devices in 2014. Well, it looks like the first of these devices will be arriving in April. But before anyone gets super excited here — this first device is going to be one aimed at developers. We’ve seen similar reference tablets from Qualcomm in the past, and this time around we are seeing the Snapdragon 805 Mobile Development Platform Tablet (MDP/T).

This model will have a 10.06-inch (2560 x 1440) 16:9 IPS display. Developers will find 3GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, a 2MP front-facing camera and 13MP rear-facing camera. There will also a be dual 3D gesture camera with IR LED. Other highlights include a 3400 mAh battery, microSD card slot, Android 4.4 Kit Kat and a wide variety of sensors. Those sensors include everything from the basics such as an accelerometer and light sensor to a fingerprint scanner and more.

Basically, this is the model tablet aimed at helping developers do what they need to do — develop. To that point, In addition to Kit Kat, the Snapdragon 805 MDP/T will also have a variety of Qualcomm provided software tools to aid in the development process. Looking back to the basics of this particular model — the specifics for the processor are as follows;

  • Quad Krait 450 cores running at up to 2.7 GHz per core
  • Adreno 420 GPU with support for geometry shaders and hardware tessellation
  • Hexagon QDSP6 V5A (600MHz)

The tablet is priced at $799 and set to begin shipping in late-April. But having said all that, while the tablet is neat to see, and may even be a bit of fun to play with — it really wouldn’t make much sense for the average non-developer user.

  1. Qualcomm should step up and commercially produce both a 7″ (1440p) and a 10″ (2160p) tablet to give the company some real cred, particularly if many of the above specs are included.
    Sure this may upset a few of the people it supplies, but if it simply focuses on what it is very good at then there is a danger of a loss of possible market share.
    Other players like Intel, Nvidia & Mediatek are for the most part introducing cutting edge technology of their own this year.
    Not a big supporter of 3D visually on screen. Motion sensing 3D cameras and there reason for being is interesting……..a prelude to possible future holographic technologies perhaps.

    • Intel, Nvidia & Mediatek WISH they were as successful as Qualcomm or Samsung.

      $800 is killer for the specs. I can see non-devs buying this. I’m not sure how long Qualcomm supports these with new Android versions though.

    • Qualcomm has so much more “real cred” than it will need for a long time. Qualcomm should do what it has been doing for quite some time now: dominating the market because they make the hands down best arm processors available. I am sure they will keep up the good work.

  2. Why is it not for non developers based on price….. Specs probably equivalent to either next or one after that Ipad… Price is equivalent has expandable storage and runs android which is better than ios the same in just about every way.

    • It’s not because of the price. Feel free to get one but remember: This thing will have very few usable apps and zero support, which will be fixed by the developers who will be using these to make the apps for end users. Or you could wait 6 months to a year until after the developers have worked on it and buy a name brand tablet with all the apps and support that the typical end user requires/expects/can’t use the device without.
