Qualcomm has realized that the initial members of their Snapdragon 600 line have the potential to make the case as the first choice for manufacturers competing in the midrange market. We’re talking specifically about the chipsets they initially named the Snapdragon 620 and the Snapdragon 618. There’s a bit of a change in the naming convention.

Now these two will be renamed as the Snapdragon 652 and the Snapdragon 650, respectively. Qualcomm says that “the renaming is to recognize the significant modem, processing, graphics, and camera advantages these two processors bring to the Snapdragon 600 tier.” This is also to separate the chipsets from the more basic 600-tierchipsets like the SD615, SD616, and SD617.

The SD652 and SD650 have these going for them – the use of the advanced X8 LTE modem technology with Cat 7 LTE support and carrier aggregation. The processors also use the newer ARM-A72 CPU cores. Lastly, these two integrate the Qualcomm Adreno 510 GPU, the newest graphics chip Qualcomm has at this point.

So there is a slight change in naming, but this is just to show us that the SD652 and SD650 are the top dogs of Qualcomm’s SD600 line. Look for these two chipsets to start showing up in devices come late Q1 of 2016 going into the midyear.
