Qualcomm has just introduced a new Snapdragon Wear processor for wearables. The Snapdragon Wear 2100 is poised to replace the Snapdragon 400 that is now commonly installed on the latest smartwatches in the market. The new Snapdragon Wear chip is expected to be used in future Android Wear devices to allow faster and improved wearable performance.

The Snapdragon Wear 2100 is officialy the first from the new Snapdragon Wear platform. Finally, Qualcomm created a separate category for the Snapdragon Wear platform because it really is different from the Snapdragon processors used in mobile devices. Snapdragon Wear is set to offer always-connected experiences, smart sensing, longer battery life, and sleeker designs in smartwatches because it is smaller. Qualcomm is also positioning the processor to be incorporated deeper in the wearables game possibly being used in sports and fashion.

Snapdragon Wear 2100 is available in two versions: connected (4G/LTE and 3G) and tethered (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi). The wearable platform boasts of its smarter sensors, lower power, and smaller size. It also allows the wearable device to be always connected because of the LTE modem with GNSS, Bluetooth, and WiFi. This chip is 30 percent smaller than the Snapdragon which means OEMs can now make smaller, slimmer, and thinner smartwatches. In the near future, expect to see less bulky wearables.

The Snapdragon Wear 400 also generates lower power by about 25 percent which can result to a longer battery life. As for the sensors, they are smarter now with an ultra-low power sensor hub that brings faster and more accurate reading of algorithms.
